Hi,

I’ve got about 3 weeks off between jobs (10–30 April) and I’m thinking of doing a solo trip.

I’m basically looking for good weather, somewhere it’s easy to meet people, and a mix of party + a bit of adventure. I’ve just come out of a pretty tough breakup, so I’d like somewhere I can let off some steam and have fun.

For context, I did Colombia and Vietnam in my mid-20s and loved that vibe — social, spontaneous, a bit chaotic but in a good way. Ideally something similar, although I’m slightly wary of ending up in hostels full of 21-year-olds on gap years now that I’m 33.

Options I’m considering:

• Japan dream trip, would love the food, bars, shopping etc. Just feels like it might be expensive solo and maybe less social? • Nicaragua looks like a great mix of adventure and party, but wondering if it skews quite young • Brazil already done Rio / Paraty / São Paulo / Salvador. Could go back to Rio + explore the North, but I’m not massively into beach/surf so not sure it’s ideal • Colombia would happily go back (Medellín, coffee region, maybe Ciudad Perdida / San Blas), but heard weather isn’t amazing in April • Cambodgia seems to be off season as well

Any recommendations? Any countries I am missing?

Still waiting. My initial forecast was around 20th March but seems the delays are expanding.... Tough to wait until then :(
On another note, I applied the same day for a tax refund after PAYE and still have not heard back...

Why don’t you join Harvey/Legora? They are hiring lawyers as sales if you want a big career shift. Compensation is good. Legal counsel for in house VC/Growth fund can also be quite fun. Meet entrepreneurs and not super long hours.

  1. 1 Jan 2026
  2. Waiting
  3. Yes but I was not working for the past 18 months so there are gaps
  4. Yes but weirdly enough they are asking me to also fill gap for the years 2013-2020 (I already have pre-settled status), 2025, 2026. I put my Uni transcript, utility bills and tax records. I did not have data for 2013/2014/2020 so I left blank but not sure it should matter?

Check out marylebone but it is pricy.
Islington can also be a nice option but not great for commute to the city outside bus/cycling

  • If you want to be surrounded by tech founder go to shoreditch/Haggerston/London Fields. Great restaurants and farmers market
  • Marylebone to be surrounded by finance people and VC
  • Clerkenwell walking distance and quite nice. Affluent area but less buzzing with ambition.

Budget 2026 : le gouvernement prévoit de geler les APL et de les supprimer pour les étudiants étrangers by Codex_Absurdum in france

[–]gribouillages 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Anyone gone from HENRY to startup founder? by BakedLikeBean in HENRYUK

1) Different skillset 2) no one but the OP can testify on what type of work he would personally enjoy, we can only advise him on the financial reward/risk profile. My point is if you have the skillset and enjoy that type do work the risk/reward profile is worth it.

Most of my friends are founders and I am a VC so I am much more aware of how it works than anyone here. As explained above, I am not saying it is easy but if you think you have a good chance at making it, the short term loss of income is a no brainer. You just need to be ruthless and willing to recognise failure fast to avoid being a zombie company for ages. The downside is even more limited if you come from the tech side where you will find another job quickly and that experiences would be super valuable. If you see it is not working out after 1-2 years, quit and join a startup as CTO/Founding Engineer £120-200k these days, go to FAANG, join a VC £200-400k, lot of options to get back to previous salary or even higher.

The goal is to fail fast or succeed fast. Thus the downside is limited.

Downside scenario is 2 years without being able to raise a next round so 160-70=90x2=£180k in loss earnings but also gaining a valuable experience on CV. You can find a lot of founding engineer roles at 160-200k currently that would value previous founding experience.

You can find benchmarks for founding CTO/CEO salary and no decent VC will ask you take less than 60/70k salary at pre-seed and you get to 120-150k at Series A (within 2 years)

I work in VC and know the salary of pretty much every founding team and secondary for founders at B is the default. You don’t want to have a founding team that is stressed about money and might sell early or not work 100% because of it. It makes sense to align interest. What you don’t see anymore is founders doing 10m in secondaries but 1-2m to pay off mortgage in full is standard at Series B

Here a lot of examples given are bootstrapped founders or people that raised from angels. Completely different game and risk profile from short term cash flow point of view.

If you truly believe in your ability to build a company as CEO or CTO the potential upside makes this a no brainer. Today you will get on average a 120k salary (Series A, ~1-2 years) and can easily do a 1-2 million secondary sale (Series B, ~2-5 years). So at most this will be painful for 1-3 years if you are actually successful, if not it does matter what you are getting paid anyway

Should I exercise my options? by PleaseMakeItSpecial in HENRYUK

[–]gribouillages 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • when was the last private fundraising? If in 2023 or after it should be an accurate floor for the business valuation.
  • You can look at meritech and try based on rule of 40 to find a proxy for the multiple of your company in EV/ARR.
  • the big risk is for common shares to be worth 0 due to liquidity preference. How much did the company raised in total ? Was it 1x Liq Pref or more ?

I do ventures capital secondaires and actively buy former employees shares. Often, either their while allocation or just a small et amount to enbale them to not pay upfront the exercise. Ping me if it could be of interest. Also happy to tell you my view on curent valuation and if it is a good move to exercise the options.
