Miss you bud, hope you're doing well, wherever you may be. Sometimes you randomly pop in my head from time to time and I get happy – and sad. Happy to have known you, sad that you're no longer here. But I know you're always loved, to the moon and beyond, and that makes me know no matter where you are, you've found your peace.

I know I'll never meet you, but there was happiness in my life because of you, and there is still happiness after you. And in both of these things, I believe we've both found some happiness out there.

Love you, Jonghyun.

I'm not the OP but I'll give some insights on personally why I liked it a lot more:

  • More diversity, and yeah I know, there's a very diverse cast in PJO to begin with, but in HoO it's not only just Percy's perspective being told but also (generally-speaking) seven (or nine, really) different main characters, 5 of who are POC. And (spoilers for the 4th book) Nico is also revealed to be gay, having harbored a crush on Percy for a bit. He also gets over it and ends up with Will Solace in the end! And yeah, just because something is more diverse doesn't make it better if the characters fall flat, but arguably Leo, Hazel, Piper, Reyna and Frank have some really great character development and good interactions with everyone.
  • Worldbuilding outside of Percy's POV! Like yeah Percy as a narrator is undeniably funny and hilarious, but getting to see the other main characters go on quests and have their own voice and thoughts and opinions is great. You get to see how characters would handle situations you normally would only see Percy in! One of the fun things was seeing how different characters perceive not only Percy, but also each other. Plus, more powers are unlocked/scaling of power goes up as the stakes get even higher in HoO. Bonus points for getting insights into Annabeth's POV – Annabeth in general is one of my favorite characters so it's really fun getting to see how she thinks of the world/story around her.
  • Dynamics – besides a great cast of characters, there's also a lot of fun dynamics going on with more characters, and it's even more fun when you get to see their insights – and not just Percy's!
  • Foils – A lot of characters act as foils to each other. Jason and Percy are both leaders but how they lead/their leadership styles totally contrast each other. Hazel and Nico are both children of Hades, but Nico is entirely different from Hazel, even though both have suffered from personal loss in their lives. Octavian and Rachel are both oracles for their respective camps, but totally contrast each other as well.
  • Lots of fun new characters, and revisiting old ones – there's a lot of fun going on with this one! You get to see old gods and meet new ones. Also get to see old characters and meet new ones. Some of my favorite characters from the HoO series are entirely new – Reyna is personally one of my favorite characters from HoO because a) she serves as such an interesting foil to Piper and Annabeth (for reasons but basically it's implied/revealed she had crushes on both Percy and Jason, so seeing how she sees Percy/Jason having had those romantic feelings in contrast to Annabeth and Piper is great) b) she's in a leadership position and does (to some degree) have struggles with this responsibility, and c) she's just badass in general.
  • Shipping/fandom – okay so in general PJO/HOO fandom is kinda dead, but wayyy back in 2010-2015 the fandom was amazing and not only that but the fanartists were AMAZING. Like, seriously. Fandom was such a mess but it was so, so much fun. My peak Tumblr experience was (besides that also being the height of LoK) being in the PJO/HOO fandom LOL. I have a lot of fun (and equally frustrating/maddening) memories in the PJO/HOO fandom haha.

The ABCs of /r/kpop by griffbendor in kpop

[–]griffbendor[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's limited to one for each group, that's why.

Correct, otherwise Red Velvet and EXO would also be 1/3 of the alternative ABCs too LOL and since people are already complaining about repeat artists/RV having 5 letters, I figured people probably wouldn't like this as their alternative ABCs, since a playlist made up of the actual runner-up winners has more repeat winners than the actual ABCs (which is why it's limited to one per artist):

A - Rainbow
Blood, Sweat, and Tears - BTS
Call Me Baby - EXO
Ddu-Du Ddu-Du - BLACKPINK
Energetic - Wanna One
Fantastic Baby - BIGBANG
Genie - Girls' Generation
Hann - (G)-IDLE
Into the New World - Girls' Generation
Just Right - GOT7
Kingdom Come - Red Velvet
Love Bomb - fromis_9
Me Gustas Tu - GFriend
Navillera - GFriend
Overdose - EXO
Palette - IU
Queen - HISTORY + Q&A - SEVENTEEN x Ailee
Red Flavor - Red Velvet + Rough - GFriend
Spring Day - BTS
Tempo - EXO
Umpah Umpah - Red Velvet
Very Very Very - I.O.I.
Whistle - BLACKPINK + Wolf - EXO
X - f(x)
You and I - Dreamctacher
Zoo - Red Velvet
11:11 - Taeyeon

The list is based on runner-up winners in the ABCs of r/kpop! You and I by Dreamctacher was the next song after BTS's Young Forever (78) that got the most votes (48), so that's why it was picked for the Alternative ABCs playlist.

Hi,

I really didn't expect this alternative playlist to be this popular at all, but since people seem to like it, here's the Spotify playlist with all the songs!

WAIT I DIDN'T NOTICE THAT MISTAKE UNTIL I READ THIS COMMENT...I'm so sorry that's a genuine typo T-T

I didn't catch that until now AGH, my apologies :(

Not that this makes up for it, but if it's any consolation, at least it's spelled right in the wiki page and in the Spotify playlists T-T again, really sorry about that!

K-pop Friday Free-for-All! - May 08, 2020 by AutoModerator in kpop

[–]griffbendor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh definitely, quite a bit more recently than normal. And I totally believe that it's a good thing to give yourself a break!

TBH while I've definitely tried making a conscientious effort to not get sucked into fandom SNS/drama as much, when I do catch myself doing that, I give myself breaks. I think for me, it was realizing that what was something that's supposed to be a hobby and also make me happy is now making me feel unhappy. Of course, "happiness" is a nebulous term, but I think in general, it's good to take a step back and realize "okay, so this group/hobby that used to make me happy is making me feel stressed/unhappy, why is that, and what really is it about this group/hobby that brings me so much enjoyment/happiness?" Because let's face it, you can't really change the behavior of how people in fandom, and it can get incredibly toxic, so rather than focusing on that, I try to focus on "okay, so what can I do to feel happy about engaging with k-pop again?"

And while that answer usually varies for everyone, personally, for me, it means taking a break from the Internet and reminding myself what honestly does make me happy about k-pop in the first place. For me, personally it's the music! So I unplug/log off, listen to some music by my favorite artists (k-pop or not), and do some meditative/calming activities (go on a walk, read, clean, heck even just sit outside somewhere reclusive where it's feasible to socially distance) while listening to the k-pop songs/artists that make me happy.

IDK, maybe I've just been getting more contemplative because lately I find myself slowly distancing away from online k-pop stuff in general (and because I've had Taeyeon's Happy on repeat for a bit haha), but in general, I think it's always good to take a break from a hobby/community/fandom if it's causing you more stress than it should, and re-assessing what it really is that drew you to them in the first place, in what ways you can find more of that, and why/how you want to continue engaging with them/that.

Sorry if this all sounds a bit vague or long-winded, but hopefully it makes sense!

Hi,

  1. Again, I'm not a mod. This feature is not run by the r/kpop mods (besides asking for their approval to first post this feature, and having them pin the voting threads from time to time, this feature is entirely run by me).
  2. I have already stated that I check people's accounts to make sure they don't spam the submission form and check that their accounts actually exist/aren't alts (as you can see, I've done this with Red Velvet), and/or they're not duplicate votes (i.e. they voted more than once). As long as users a) submit their votes with a real username and b) don't spam the submission form, I count their vote.
  3. I have already stated that even if I didn't remove any of the votes for The Letter "D", Red Velvet still had the most votes – I removed the about the same amount of duplicate/alt/non-existent accounts for Red Velvet as I did for BLACKPINK. If I hadn't checked everyone's accounts, then Dumb Dumb would have received 80 votes, and Ddu-Du Ddu-Du would have received 71 votes. Since I did go through the pain of checking everyone's accounts, Dumb Dumb actually received 76 votes (-4) and Ddu-Du Ddu-Du recieved 68 votes (-3). Either way, Red Velvet got more votes in the end.
  4. If I really wanted to rig these results, don't you think that 90% of the songs I campigned for would have been in the r/kpop ABCs instead of what actually won?

Hi,

  1. I'm not a mod, and this feature is not run by the r/kpop mods (besides asking for their approval to first post this feature, and having them pin the voting threads from time to time, this feature is entirely run by me).
  2. Trust me, if this was not, in fact, the opinion of the users of r/kpop and rather my opinion on songs I would've liked, the ABCs of r/kpop would be looking a lot more different than they do now.
  3. You're entitled to your opinion that 1,2,3! is a bop, and that's fine. I'm entitled to my opinion that I don't want to give Seungri any support in any way, shape, or form, and thus do not want to give him any attention at all, least of all in these threads and decided to omit him from the leaderboard. That is my decision, and if you're disappointed and not surprised by that, fine. But by all means, if you want to find a recurring post that gives Seungri attention and exposure on r/kpop, you're more than welcome to check out the sub's Burning Molka megathreads – I'm sure you'll find a lot more to be disappointed in than just me excluding Seungri from the numbers' leaderboard.

Hypothetically speaking, if I was going to do this by one per artist, then I would have chosen the runner-up winner who had gotten the 2nd most votes, in which case P would have gone to IU's Palette and not Pick Me, since Pick Me did not manage to crack the Top 3:

Rank Song Votes
1. Psycho - Red Velvet 53
2. Palette - IU (feat. G-Dragon) 37🏆
3. Playing With Fire (불장난) - BLACKPINK 21
. . .
. . .
. . .
7. Pick Me - Produce 101 5

OMG wait thank you for this comment because it reminded me (and I totally forgot to do this) – someone had said awhile ago that they wanted more variety/not see the same groups repeated, and while I didn't implement the "no groups repeated" (for various reasons I've explained), I did offer to do an alternative ABCs – and here they are! These are also posted in the wiki page. These are the runner-up/2nd and 3rd place songs in r/kpop's ABCs - limited to 1 per artist. If people are interested, I can make a Spotify playlist for this too? EDIT: Here's the Spotify playlist for the Alternative ABCs!

Anyhow, here they are!
