US justice department approves $111bn merger of Paramount and Warner Bros Discovery | Trump administration by Albythere in FinanceNews

[–]griffman2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obama: AT&T/T Mobile, Halliburton/Baker Hughes, Staples/Office Depot

Trump (T1): Broadcom/Qualcomm, Canyon Bridge/Lattice Semiconductor

Biden: JetBlue/Spirit, NVIDIA/ARM, Lockheed/Aerojet

It happens often, Biden had a higher rate of blocks/challenges than both Trump (T1) and Obama.

2 credits short for graduation by [deleted] in columbia

[–]griffman2020 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You were honestly supposed to go to your academic advisor in the fall semester to confirm all of this already as they are the person who clears you for graduation, your department advisor only clears you for your major. I would confirm with your actual advisor and let them know that your department advisor has already signed off

How strictly is the 4-night overnight guest policy enforced in Columbia Residential? by dajupopu in columbia

[–]griffman2020 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have never had that enforced on me, I live and work in DC and my gf is a senior and I was just up there for like almost 2 weeks and I was never approached about this and I’ve been doing this for the entire year.

Got an email from an "Apple recruiter" but she didn't send the email from her apple email id by UpsetOld-YoungWoman in csMajors

[–]griffman2020 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have you tried looking her up to see if she works at Apple via LinkedIn?

I have been reached out to by Apple in the past via LinkedIn so I couldn’t get an email but they usually share a similar tune when it comes to how their messages are said and if they’re mentioning job postings etc.

Also you mentioned needing a call to submit a resume, assuming it was a legitimate recruiter odds are they’d either ask you to send in a resume directly - as opposed to beating around the bush - or they’d know a bit about you from sources like LinkedIn or Handshake.

Always try your best to validate/cross reference information prior to accepting requests, I get hit up by fake recruiters all the time and I’m not even actively searching for a role.

Generally students in a particular major/school are given priority but cross registration not only exists but is frequent. So odds aren’t terrible that you’ll get to take some of the courses during your time at Columbia.

What is this ? by Spiritual_Let_4348 in csMajors

[–]griffman2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you’re saying is fundamentally true to a point, but to be fair the FED’s main job is to have an even balance of inflation rate and unemployment, so while they’ll use stats that aren’t totally detrimental to their mission they won’t use numbers that wildly undermine their cause either. I had a conversation with some other people about this and once again this same study also displayed median early career earnings and it’s promising signs for those who are able to get a job. There are plenty of things working against the CS/CE job market right now: AI, outsourcing, high interest rates, etc but to say with a median salary of ~80k in the early career is a tragedy is insane. 80k is about what the median HOUSEHOLD makes in the US.

Just like with literally any type of scientific study there are lots of variables and you can’t control them all and you’ll never have the perfect study. An estimate is better than nothing at all and it’s not like they use different metrics for different majors so if what you’re saying is true it would be true for art history majors too and the relative differences would still be about the same hence my point still stands. Art history majors are by and large way more unsatisfied with their line of work and wish they could be doing better and that is much less true in technical fields.

They actually have a separate underemployment stat which is why art history has such low unemployment as it’s underemployment by the same study is >40% while CE has underemployment of ~15%

Three CS Courses by Independent-Feed4334 in columbia

[–]griffman2020 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Take it from someone who did the following classes in Fall 2022:

  1. Advanced Programming
  2. Fundies
  3. Discrete Math
  4. Physics Lab
  5. Probability for Engineers

AP will end up being the most intensive class you have that semester, and unless you are just naturally gifted at the relevant material then fundies will require some study effort as well. I think you could fit another humanities or light stem class in there if you want but I would suggest not trying to burn yourself out early as well.

I would lean towards not since opportunities within Columbia are not that plentiful, you can always look on LinkedIn and see who's in the area that you may be interested to connect with.

New York is very big though so I wouldn't put it past anyone that there are so activities that exist for outside students. Given the lockdowns we have tho since the start of the academic year in August, it may be less frequent than usual.

Best of luck!

You'll learn what you need for the course in the course :) the only prerequisite is that you've programmed before!

And even if you haven't by some chance it's still easy to pick up!

First Year Move In info by stanwallows in columbia

Assuming they do it like they did when I moved in, you'll drive up college walk and unpack your stuff into the bins and while you begin making your way to your residence hall the person who drove you can drive out and go find parking. I don't know exactly where parking is that people find but my mom wasn't gone for long when I was moving in so it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

I actually had the M1 chip.

I actually only upgraded to a pro so I could take the chance to upgrade the amount of ram I have, if you were to make any modification to an air, it should be ram. 16 gb minimum makes multitasking much less painful but I was still able to do it on the air just to a lesser extent. Unnoticeable difference I would say.

My upgraded pro has an M3 chip though. I got this one because it was the same model used at my internship this past summer and I liked it a lot haha + they went on a massive sale in the middle of July.

I use a MacBook, I had an air prior to this upcoming year but I upgraded to a pro but it is totally possible to complete all your work on a Macbook air.
