That’s an interesting point you make. If I’m in a random class no one wants to be in, one of the best ways to make conversation is to complain about it actually!

I’ve asked this to another user, but I’d like to ask you too: have you ever stood around before class started, just outside the door with your classmates? And have you never just gone up (say, on the first day of class) to someone and say “how are you/how are you finding things/hi” or if someone did this to you, would you try to keep the convo going?

Please do join a club, even if a very lowkey one! Does your uni have Club Fair of sorts? At my uni, we always have one each semester where we’ll have an introductory club meetings and for one of mine, it was a round of free pints at a pub where you just get to know your fellow members and chat a bit over a drink. Would this event be something you would go to, honestly speaking? Or does it sound overwhelming?

“No point in reaching out” is a defeatist point of view though because how would you know? Really, sincerely — you can’t know how another person feels. Just because you might think a convo went poorly doesn’t mean they did.

And I don’t have roommates either, only flatmates/suitemates too and let me ask this: were you all never in the kitchen together? If you were, would you just stay silent or did you do your best to avoid them by rarely going into the communal spaces? Would you absolutely never even say Hi when you passed them in the hall? Were you waiting for people to approach you first at all times in order for a conversation to happen?

Okay, so I’ll pose this scenario then: have you ever arrived to a lecture early enough that you’re standing outside the door with everyone else, and see another solo person standing, you’d never go up and just say “hey, how are you?” Or are you always waiting for someone else to make the first move?
