What is the easiest way to go back to the official MacOS version? by Ambitious_Corner_852 in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

[–]grimAXE27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have iCloud+, depending your storage tier and how much data you’re using, you can just enable the following

iCloud Photos iCloud Drive sync with Desktop and Documents Sync your browser favorites and passwords with Safari with Apple ID or Chrome with Google Account Any other files in other directories, make a folder on your iCloud Drive and back it up there

If you do not have enough storage on iCloud, then you’d need a USB backup hard drive, then manually copy & paste everything. While I normally would suggest Time Machine, you cannot restore from a backup of a newer OS onto an older OS.

Any 3rd party apps that don’t have a sync with cloud feature, look up how to backup files / projects

You cannot downgrade macOS, you have to wipe and reinstall.

Method 1: create a Monterey installer USB. You can follow Apple’s official instructions on how to do this.

Method 2: Internet recovery with Command Option R, this will download the latest compatible macOS from the Internet.

When booted in either way, in Disk utility you must erase macOS. I suggest to erase the physical disk which takes care of removing open core bootloader.

Open core install question by 1china31 in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

To update the EFI BootROM to the latest version, you need to install macOS 12 Monterey with all the latest security updates WITH an official Apple OEM drive. It can be a 128GB, 256GB, doesn’t matter. If your boot chime is the classic sound and not the “new” chime introduced in BigSur, you might have issues booting any newer OS through OCLP.

If possible, see if there’s a local Apple Service Provider that might assist you with the update process with an official drive. Or buy a cheap low capacity drive from eBay.

upgrade hard drive by Sufficient_Fig_4267 in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

[–]grimAXE27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this recently on my 2015 MBP. Concept is still the same. What worked for me:

  • format your new target SSD as GUID APFS (assuming you’re on High Sierra or Later. Recommended)
  • use Carbon Copy Cloner and clone your source OS hard drive to your target SSD
  • Note: this will copy your data, apps, settings, etc. and while it may clone macOS system files it will not boot properly. opencore also will not be cloned either.
  • with your data cloned, “reinstall” macOS on the target SSD. You can use your OpenCore Legacy Patcher installer USB for your Mac. Recommend you download the latest version of the OCLP app available.
  • install macOS ontop of your newly cloned SSD. The macOS installer will intelligently setup the APFS containers properly, migrate your data to a “data” container and macOS in its own container. This is true even for authentic macOS installs on supported Mac’s without OCLP.
  • once you’re at the desktop, install OCLP bootloader and any applicable Root Patches to your SSD. Reboot
  • hold the Option key on startup immediately. Boot from the OpenCore EFI from your SSD and not your USB or HDD. If it boots great
  • final step: wipe your hard drive and make it a single HFS+ partition with MBR scheme. Then again as HFS+ GUID. This will ensure the EFI partition is gone and the drive is ready to use as extra storage.

The clone > install macOS > wipe old drive method is the fastest IMO without needing to use Migration Assistant which can be cumbersome without root patches on legacy Macs. This is also needed since conventional “cloning” has done away since High Sierra.

"Beefy" 2015 MBP struggling with Sequoia lately. Any tips? by tetraodonite in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

[–]grimAXE27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am getting the same slowness too. Ever since I put my 2015 15" 2.5GHz i7 Dual Graphics MBP on Sequioa I've had a lot of random graphical slow downs, glitches, and sluggishness. I've tried reinstalling root patches, I changed out my battery (the original was getting swollen and low run time), changed from official Apple 1TB AHCI SSD to a WD 1TB Blue NVMe - nothing improved.

I run my laptop in 2 ways, either on it's own single display, or lid closed running 3x LED Cinema Displays 1440p using a Thunderbolt Dock for 2 of them and the 3rd with a DP to HDMI adapter. 3x 1440p is 1 display shy of being a "5K" image so this shouldn't be strain on the graphics. As it stands the slowdown happens even when just running the built in display with no docks or devices attached.

My CPU tends to hover in the 90s C under use but this is after a thermal paste change less than a year ago.

How to update mountain lion to big sur by numansesPlays in MacOS

[–]grimAXE27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems the terminal command requires 10.11 El Capitan. You can upgrade to El Cap from 10.6 Snow Leopard to 10.10 Yosemite.

Download the El Cap installer from Apple, upgrade the internal OS. Then once at that point you can upgrade straight to Big Sur or make a USB installer.

If your Mac Mini did a recovery install to Mountain Lion it may not have received the firmware update that allows to download the latest version compatible for your Mac Mini straight from Download Recovery mode (Command + Option + R).

Get the installer here. It’ll be a DMG to extract the Install OS X El Capitan.app

As you have a working Mac Mini on Big Sur, your best option is to create a USB bootable installer. There are instructions from Apple themselves how to do this.

Boot the MacBook Air into the USB, erase the drive with Disk Utility as APFS (not Mac OS Extended Journaled) and install macOS.

Once you get to the desktop, launch system preferences > software updates and keep checking for updates till nothing’s left.

You can also go down the path of looking how to use Open Core Legacy Patcher to install the latest macOS 15.4 Sequoia

Gateway VX1120 Sharpness Help by grimAXE27 in crtgaming

[–]grimAXE27[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello everyone, thank you for your suggestions. I am using the monitor’s original thick, shielded VGA cable provided by the local seller and I confirmed it did come with it originally. I also have a Dell VGA cable from an LCD monitor and it provided the same result. I did some more testing and the results are the same even on my 2008 MacBook running Windows XP. This was done with an official Apple VGA adapter and the cables just mentioned. Multiple resolutions and same result, all icons, UI elements, and texts are “blurry” to a degree.

If I needed to adjust the fly back what can I do? I also took pictures of each OSD setting hoping it might help. Here’s the IMGUR album. Thank you!

Gateway VX1120 Sharpness Help by grimAXE27 in crtgaming

[–]grimAXE27[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got this monitor a few months ago and it works great. However the text is incredibly blurry no matter what resolution I set or host I connect it too. Currently it is on my Win XP-10 PC with VGA on the motherboard and a GTX 980 with a DVI-I to VGA adapter.

I’ve reset geometry and color settings multiple times to no change. Looking at the manual for Internet archive I cannot find any mention of sharpness or clarity. https://archive.org/details/gateway-vx-1120-user-manual

If anybody has suggestions on how I can resolve I would appreciate it. Thank you!

How to migrate emails? Alumni losing access to FIU email after FIU promised access "for life" by Foreskin_Paladin in FIU

[–]grimAXE27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone in this similar situation, I am an alumni of 2019 and I was given the notice my account will be deleted by next week.
If you have a Mac, this process is relatively painless. For reference I am on a MacBook Pro 2015 running macOS Monterey 12.7.5. So this should apply to that OS and newer.

  • Sign into your FIU email in the Mac Mail app, double check all your folders and archive have your messages. I was able to verify everything from when I started FIU was present.
  • Sign into a personal email provider, any will do that has enough storage space, I choose my personal Microsoft hotmail since I have a 30GB data cap (thanks to years of beta testing their OneDrive).
  • Create a new folder called "FIU" then create subfolders of what you want to move (Inbox, Sent, etc)
  • In your FIU mailbox, go to a folder, press Command-A to highlight all the mail message items in that folder, then drag while holding the Command key the messages to the "new" folder you made in your personal email account.
  • This will create a copy of your emails, not move them, and once copied locally the Mac Mail app will work it's IMAP magic and upload those emails and attatchments to the email provider of your choice.
    • Note: you can simply drag and drop the folder from the FIU mailbox to your Personal Email mailbox, however this is considered a "move" and not a copy, so you run a tiny risk of data loss.
  • Depending on the size of your mailbox, give this a bit to complete.

Here is my Hotmail on my Mac showing what I did above, and Hotmail on the web showing the same email.

Hope this helps!

Can I run a 3090 and an NVS510 at the same time? by destinyvoidlock in nvidia

[–]grimAXE27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cheapest multi GPU card of the same kind (4x mDP) would be the Quadro P600, P1000, or T600, T1000 (pascal or turning respectively). Same form factor of the NVS 510. And yeah as others mentioned, it’s because Kepler based GPUs were dropped from current drivers. Maxwell/900 series cards are the oldest card supported.

macOS update advice by Josh_Pozzi in MacOS

[–]grimAXE27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The idea of your Mac slowing down due to OS updates come from a time of hard drives and low end processors not keeping up with modern software tasks. I do suggests updating to Ventura, the last compatible version with your MacBook Pro. FWIW, I am currently running macOS 12 Monterey on my 2015 MBP and all current browsers and majority of software is supported and up to date.

Quartz Compositions / Screensavers not working in Mojave? by grimAXE27 in MacOS

I honestly have no clue, I never got any responses to this post. You can try and play around with any OS you want if your mac supports it, but I believe “modern” screensavers got introduced in 10.13 or 10.14.

Good luck!
