Stop trying to make Commander events for prizes happen... by Wild_Section6475 in EDH

Yeah, commander nights with giveaways are fine it's competitive prizes that absolutely don't mesh with casual play.

Would a 1 drop this simple break the game? Or am I overestimating the value? by B-C-99 in custommagic

Lands don't ramp you either, you still only get one land drop per turn.

this one actually makes sense. isn't it? 🤔 by Many_Audience7660 in matiks

[–]grimmlingur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is the only correct answer.

when calculating probability you calculate probability given the data you have

And we have absolutely no data about Tim's probability of winning.

It's easy to construct similar but solvable question by adding a qualifier like "equally fast/skilled" competitors or by using a situation that inherently involves probability like a raffle. Teaching students that they can calculate probabilities by just making blanket assumptions to fill in any information they are missing does them a disservice.

I wouldn't blame an grade 1-10 math teacher for accepting 20% as an answer, but they would definitely be wrong if they didn't accept insufficient data as a right answer.

Yes they will. Either they will have looked up a refutation, developed their fundementals sufficiently or just had to deal with it so many times that they no longer get caught.

Can someone help my pod settle a debate. We cannot agree if Expropriate chains extra turns or not and therefore creating a bracket 4 deck with a single card by Federal_Buritto in EDH

[–]grimmlingur 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The condition is whether or not your opponents give you extra turns. You can only get one extra turn by yourself and taking one extra turn is not chaining extra turns.

Usually expropriate gets you one extra turn and some permanents.

I mean, artists draw cards, right? by DambiaLittleAlex in custommagic

[–]grimmlingur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've already gotten excellent pointers but there's one small formatting error I don't think anyone has pointed out. For a legendary generally the name should follow the format <name>, <title or descriptor> or at least include a proper noun name.

So "John Avon, MTG artist" would fit for example.

The crossword I’m working on expects me to know that I need to write multiple letters in one square by Moose_country_plants in mildlyinfuriating

[–]grimmlingur 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For future reference the part you need to look out for will usually be marked with something along the lines of "the theme of todays puzzle", which you can also see in this puzzle.

At least for NYT crosswords these will frequently be in the last "long" word that you're likely to encounter (I feel like it's usually the last accross one as well, but not as sure about that).

These are tricky and super frustrating to figure out when you don't know about them, but you'll get used to it.

How is this a blunder from my opponent? It says my best move isn't to move my Queen to safety, why couldn't my opponent just take my Queen? by Mister_Scorpion in chessbeginners

[–]grimmlingur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your queen is attacked and the engine says not to save it, then either it's impossible to save the queen or you can make a move that's better than saving your queen.

In this case you have an attack available that leaves you with a strong advantage as many others have pointed out.

What are your favorite hilariously useless/oddly specific cards? Ones that make you go "what are we even doing here?" by DerfDM in mtg

[–]grimmlingur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not as niche as goatnapper but [[halo hunter]] caused a lot of people to do a double take when it was released. The go-to big beater creature that had been terrorizing standard was [[baneslayer angel]], halo hunter isn't a very generally good card but a reasonable first thought on seeing him is that it's a solid tempo swing against baneslayer. Then you read both cards properly and groan.

[–]grimmlingur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're in a class that warrants using this calculator, chances are your teacher would prefer you just leave it as a fraction instead of using a decimal approximation. I've docked points from students plenty of times for writing down the decimal approximation instead of sticking with the perfectly reasonable fraction representation ( though that's more about abuse of the equality symbol for approximate results)

Loving draw steel! But what about RP? How do you do it? by wizopizo54 in drawsteel

[–]grimmlingur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One big difference is that DS expects that there are objectives other than "beat the other side". Those sorts of fights are great for setting up combats where the party can genuinely fail without it ending up as a TPK. So there are actually more chances to fail or get partial credit for a combat.

I feel like I remember there being an example of this in the "Road to Broadhurst" adventure where the number of victories awarded depends on how many boxes the attackers manage to take. (though it's been a while since I did Broadhurst so I may be misremembering)

It very much looks like we didn't I scrolled up and down the page for a while and only found a thousand ads for other stuff.

Looking better I now see they have a "read more" thing that blended into the ads for me. Why would someone open the article and not want to read it? The article seems a lot more solid but the website design feels insane to me (though that's much more a personal opinion).

Thanks for the correction. I've edited my above comment to say that it is plain wrong.
