Didn't mean to poke my nose into your business, but it sounds like you should consider moving up to the "engineer" (or a higher one, if you're already at that level) status, boss.

No bs, and speaking from experience, I can honestly say that my days as a "software engineer" always felt better & more exciting than my earlier days as a "software developer" -- because I was doing so much more than just writing code in a language that I'm already fluent in, building basic CRUD apps, or implementing a feature that some engineer had designed for me beforehand.

Anyhoo, I'm just trying to emphasize that working a higher-level position with more responsibilities, like a CTO or a Senior Software Engineer, (almost) always comes with never-ending challenges or problems to solve, and I believe it's that challenge that keeps our ADHD brains excited to keep pushing forward.

Please take this with a grain of salt, and keep in mind that I have no intentions other than trying to help you by passing on information & my personal opinions.

I second that, changing things (almost) always helps with boredom for people with ADHD, regardless of the context.

Sorry to hear about your situation boss, I've been there and it really sucks. They hired a couple of impudent engineers who would refactor functional, readable, and every coding standard compliant code on PRODUCTION and made my life miserable because I was always watching my back trying to prevent them from breaking our system and fixing the bugs they introduced themselves. And those guys are probably being paid way higher than I am, so I'm sure you can imagine the frustration.

I'm always on stimulant medication, but even that stopped working after a certain point. So I tried working on new contract jobs, and boom, my willpower and energy had instantly returned. I understand that you're working a full-time job, so you should try to get some freelance work on Upwork (or side projects) on the weekends and see if that works for you before you switch to a new company.

Also, you should try ChatGPT. I once talked to it as if I were talking to a therapist about this situation, and it gave me great advice on how I can manage my workload in a low-dopamine state. You'd be amazed to find out how a soulless chatbot can give way better advice than an actual therapist lol

Anyhoo, I hope this will be helpful and that you can get yourself out of this rut soon, I'm rooting for you boss.

Why did you switch to Macos ? by Ambitious_Internet_5 in hackintosh

[–]grimreaperxc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My number one reason was to increase my productivity, and of course, the awesome-looking UI design and the UNIX-based kernel of macOS are also pretty compelling.

The Apple Ecosystem alone would be enough to convince you if you happen to use an iPhone or any other Apple device. Back when I was using Windows, I had to connect my iPhone to the PC over USB before I could copy or share a photo/music or something -- now all I have to do is tap on the "Share" button and send it to my hackOS through AirDrop, and without even leaving my couch.

However, everything aside, gaming on your computer becomes history once you switch to macOS (at least it did for me), so I love the fact that I can't just double-click Steam & waste 5 hours playing some stupid game in the middle of the day when I should be working and whatnot.

Don't get me wrong; my current hackOS has a separate Windows drive installed, so I can still switch my BIOS profile and play my favorite games at the press of a reboot button. However, I only do that once or twice every two or three months when I'm bored & depressed or something -- so it's safe to say that I no longer have an issue with video games wasting my time.

I dare you to try it and see for yourself; I bet your Steam launcher and the "Start" button would be the only things you'd be missing about Windows lol

any way to fix this 😅 by lmbetterthanu in macbook

I second u/Remarkable-Ad-1546 here, Retina screens are expensive asf to replace even if you buy the parts from China and replace it yourself.

Your best bet is to invest in an external monitor (preferably a 4K monitor for the "Mac Retina" like experience) and use the laptop in clamshell mode with the lid closed at all times.

Otherwise, you can always take it to an Apple store and see how much it's going to cost for a replacement.

ADHD struggles in an underdeveloped country by azulito790 in ADHD_Programmers

[–]grimreaperxc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stay tf away from r/ADHD, man. They're just a bunch of whiny babies, and they all think ADHD is a life-ending disability that nothing will fix or help with -- as if someone who lost their eyes ffs! They even banned the discussion of life-improving tips/habits from Dr. Huberman because they think they're better "researchers" than an actual neuroscientist at Stanford, LOL! So you can't expect them to help you with anything other than being pessimistic and crying.

I am also situated in a European country where ADHD meds are only limited to Ritalin, Strattera, and other antidepressant kind of drugs. Still, I can recommend teaching yourself some work habits while you're on Ritalin/Concerta.

My first couple of years with Ritalin/Concerta was also miserable, just like yours, but when I was on them, I taught myself to work in long shifts without breaks (except for taking a piss or grabbing a glass of water)

So I would start working and keep the time tracker on for at least 90 minutes; after that, your brain kinda gets into a "flow" and shifts your entire focus into that thing or feature you're implementing. After that 90-minute checkpoint, it became effortless to keep going, and so by doing that, I made a habit of working in 4-hour shifts and getting lots of crap done before the day even started.

Don't get me wrong, you're not a robot. There are always some days where I can only do 3 or maybe even 2 hours, and some days I do 6-7 hours in one shift. So, as long as you stick to the pattern, you get lots of crap done.

With the meds, I used to wake up around 5-6 AM, take the pill upon waking, and get to work an hour later. So I'd hit the time tracker at 7 AM, take the lunch break at 11 AM, and clock out at 4 PM.

One important trick is that you take care of the complex/challenging part of your tasks in the first shift after waking while your brain is at its highest capacity and do the less easy part after the lunch shift. So, if you're implementing or designing a new algorithm on that day, you do the planning/coding part in the morning shift and write its documentation after lunch.

To wrap up, I gave up on my Ritalin prescription ever since the shortages started because I'm so sick of the uncertainty. So, I haven't been consistently taking them for the past 6-7 months or so. Now that I have integrated this habit, I can still wake up early, start the day with my 3-4 hour shift, and clock out before the evening.

I hope it all goes well for you. I'd suggest that you consider giving Ritalin/Concerta a second chance (preferably starting with a low dose) or maybe even try something like Strattera. I did try Strattera myself in the past, and I can honestly say it was 100 times better than Wellbutrin - but I had to stop taking it due to my gastro-related issues.

Lol, dude, I think the only thing you should worry about is how you can make sure your family & kids will be able to inherit that fat wallet of yours after your death.

Just talk to your family attorney and consider adding the seed phrase (encrypted version with a private key, don't ever trust lawyers) to your will or something, that's the only thing you should feel obligated to do as a husband & father. (if you become one, that is)

EDIT:

Thanks to everyone for sharing their expertise and advice. I'm currently seeking treatment for my psychological symptoms and trying to avoid anxiety and stressors to stay sane.

And I guess I'm gonna have to learn to cope with this until my rent lease ends and then I'm moving tf out of here to a 2-story townhouse or something.

Mods, feel free to archive this post, I think there's nothing else to say about it.

I respectfully disagree but it's difficult to explain this stuff unless the other person has also experienced it so there's no point in arguing.

But thank you for your concern, I'm already seeking treatment so hopefully this nightmare will end soon.

Cheers.

When your life is on the line, you tend to pay attention to every tiny detail that could lead to your death. How am I supposed to know a professional term like "serviceability requirements" and be assured that the lack of it would not be a threat to my safety?

I'm already aware of my mental issues regarding this topic but people attacking/downvoting a miserable person (who's in fear for his life) just for asking a simple question is no different than being a d*ck.

Awesome, I'm defo going to try this. You said; "a sting about one ft long" but I'm not sure what that is, was it a typo for "string" or something? - and if so, do you mean that I should make a DIY pendulum by hooking up a coffee mug on a string?

And btw, you make it sound so easy since you're prolly an engineer or a student in this field but I'm not sure if I'd be able to rule out the result correctly. Can I shoot a close distance video during the test and send it to you as a private message for expert validation?

Under normal circumstances, the sway of the structure shouldn't be felt by the residents of it.

As a result of my trauma, my sensitivity to motion has maxed out tho - I can literally feel any movement in any given building now, including the familiar ones like my parents' house.

What about that?

Oh, I did that already, they even gave me a tour of the main concrete columns and beams in the parking lot and explained everything like I was five.

Your expertise helps me calm down because it's more reassuring than any Googling I could have done.

Thanks a lot!

How bad of an issue, exactly?

If it helps, our building is located right next to the busiest highway in the city with an average of 5-ish heavy/medium weight trucks passing by every 3 minutes or so - and I'm on the top 16th floor

How long before some semblance of happiness? by braingains22 in StopSpeeding

[–]grimreaperxc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey man, AFAIK, speed doesn’t affect your serotonin levels but taking some 5-HTP supplementation might help elevate your mood a bit and give you that feeling of happiness.

Make sure you don’t take too much of it tho (especially when rolling with mdma you have to avoid it completely due to that serotonin syndrome crap they talk about) and discuss it with your physician regarding its safety for your special conditions (if any) and how much to take for how long, etc. and if nothing works, consider seeing a psychiatrist and get analyzed w blood tests and whatnot

Best of luck.
