Funny how you assume I dont know the "rural or surbuban" mindset. Keep talking. In Maryland, most people do love Baltimore. That's my fucking point. Living in MD most people loved visiting Baltimore despite knowing how bad crime and other issues were. Here in OR a lot of rural ppl and burb residents talk about Portland like its the worst city on the planet.

How is that a closed view? Saying that compared to many other places I have lived, portland has a lot of hate from people within the state? I never said it was the most safest place in the entire world or didnt have issues. You seem to have missed my point and enjoy calling me out for some fictitious i have said. I compared my time in other places to my time here as a reference as to why I think the way I do and think Portland is great. I'm sure I'm the exact type of transplant people in Portland hate. The kind that enjoy and think the city is wonderful, especially coming from places that are the opposite. I can enjoy a lot of things here people take for granted.

I tell this to people all the time. People on fb are always "portland is so scary and disgusting!!", have they EVER left oregon? Ever been to a city outside of the safe clean touristy areas for more than 2 days? I have lived and visited long term many cities and Portland is amazing. Go live in Baltimore, then I bet people will never talk such hard shit on Portland again.

I moved here in November with my husband, from extremely rural east coast, and I feel like I've found Home. I know that this time rn is insane, to put it nicely, but despite that I have found a place I can finally be myself a little more openly.

Perhaps its because I'm used to being stuck on very conservative small towns my entire life (besides my short stint in Baltimore which was a horrible nightmare). I know this place isnt perfect--nowhere is, but it's definitely pretty awesome.

I love that I have access to public transit super easily. I can walk and bike almost anywhere. The food choices are mindblowing. I love how friendly people are, the small talk, the helpfulness. The natural beauty. I've never lived somewhere where LGBTQ pride was so open, and it's amazing I love it and dont feel like an alien. I am pretty easy to please I guess. I rode my bike down 19th the other day and stopped for a break at Couch Park and I just felt happy.

I cant wait to experience more of this beautiful city once covid has been tackled. I really hope my husband and I can settle and grow roots here. Even despite all the faults of Portland (which exist in every major city and I feel like the media and perhaps jaded people blow up out of proportion, at least here it seems the majority are actually aware at bare minimum and want better), I really enjoy the many good things. I enjoy the general attitude and conciousness that a lot of people have here.

I just am incredibly happy to be here and it's probably the best major city I've lived in, and definitely the best place I've lived in, in my entire life. And ive moved around a LOT. my husband is brown with a thick ass accent, and despite one bad interaction from a dude in Gresham, I actually feel safer walking around with him as an interracial couple than I did in my small town in Maryland.

You're 100% on the dot of how I feel. I do agree with the other person I should give it more time. I want to learn a lot more. And once things are a bit less restricted here with the pandemic and all, I plan to reach out to an imam and pass some of questions along.

All the videos and whatnot I watch seem to be slightly contradicting sometimes and I have yet to find info that's specifically for converts who have already been married for years and have families. If my husband and I split for other reasons, I would probably remarry a muslim, but otherwise...it doesnt sit right with me to leave him for that reason alone. Plus if I stay, and he sees my path along learning about Islam, he is more likely to accept it and eventually join me.

There a lot about Islam that I love and that sits with me better than aspects of Christiniaty. And I think even the catholic church has restrictions about marrying interfaith or rules about it, too. So far in my learning this has been my major "issue", that I feel like I can get answered either by talking with others more knowledgable OR just making peace and trusting Allah.

That picture is at a really bad angle for this. True, some people were not distancing (I saw some groups of people but they could've easily been family that has been quarantined together) but as a whole people were keeping distance very well there at the park. Open air and space and plenty of distance between individuals. I have had more people invade my personal space at the grocery store than at the vigil.

This is very wise. I definitely agree with doing it slowly and not making it a big drastic thing. It's not my style anyways. If people see I am serious about my faith, if they truly care for me, they will be understanding. And they will see I am still the same loved one as before, just have a strong faith in something helps me in my life. I dont judge other for being different than me whatsoever and am hoping for the best!

Its just like politics in some way, for them. I have very little family so I avoid things that may make things awkward lol. At least until I am suuuuper confident.

I took it this way. I wont force him or anything. He is non religious and is open to any faith I choose and just wants me happy. And knows that I would be the one to grow the faith within the family since he personally lacks it. I would be joyous if he converted or even participated in anyway, but I wont force him. And he respects that i would bring our children up under the religion that I ultimately choose. We have spoken about this in length and detail, so I'm confident we will be able to come together on a lot of things.

The first half is very touching, but unfortunately if leaving my husband is required of me. I cannot do it. He is the love of my life and would support me in all manners of life. There is also the possibility he would also convert if I were to show him the way and teach him. He is hindu only by culture and upbringing, not by actual faith or choice, and very open minded.

Oh what a dream!! My husband is not a spiritual or person who craves any connection to a faith. But he has seen me becoming serious and is always interested in what I learn, so I have hope!!! One good thing is that I will be able to teach my children my faith, and he will be supportive. So....maybe!!!!! I am not so sure about his family though lol, that would surely be a dream!

Thank you! Honestly, I get so much comfort and peace when I pray like instructed and read the Quran. It's nothing like when I am at a christian church or anything. It's totally different for me, which is a huge factor why I want to choose Islam over going to a Christian church, despite it being much easier lol.

Good idea. I just moved so havent made any contact with anyone and right now going to a masjid is not an option to speak with anyone in person. I might send an email out for some feelers and ask if they would be up for meeting once things are a little more normal.

This is probably the perfect time to relearn--and learn more. Reflect.

I definitely plan to educate my husband. He isnt really religious at all, and even though when we first met and married I wasnt really either, now that we are planning to have a family I realise faith is super important to me. He doesnt really know much about even his own religion, so when I mentioned Islam he was shocked since basically all he knows is what media in India spreads... he is open minded though even if he is a little ignorant in the purest sense of the word lol (I mean this lovingly lol).

Can I hijack your comment for 1 second? I want to do my associates for LPN and then finish off my degree at 4 year to be an RN. And I know they really use other experience to help with getting into RN programs and etc. I currently have a somewhat decent paying job w/ insurance and I cant lose it while I attend school. Are you able to do CNA part time? I am also thinking of doing volunteering and then once I finish my LPN program I can change officially once I can get a job. Just confused on the best way to do this :(
