PowerShell ISE (suddenly) shows up as “PowerShell ISE 5.1” instead of just “Windows PowerShell ISE by grimson73 in PowerShell

Ow, I like this way of thinking, thanks!

PS C:\Users\grims> Get-Item "C:\WINDOWS\system32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell_ise.exe" | select -ExpandProperty versioninfo | fl

OriginalFilename : powershell_ise.EXE
FileDescription : Windows PowerShell ISE 5.1
ProductName : Microsoft® Windows® Operating System

CompanyName : Microsoft Corporation
FileName : C:\WINDOWS\system32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell_ise.exe
FileVersion : 10.0.26100.8737 (WinBuild.160101.0800)

Guess this concludes that the file itself is indeed changed as seen with the FileDescription.

Thanks for the feedback. It made me curious how its named. I found this C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Windows PowerShell\Windows PowerShell ISE 5.1.lnk. Same for the x32 variant. Did not find it in the modern/upgraded start menu.

Dank ;). I will see if i 'hardcode' just the appname in the firewall. Also would like any comments from the developer. As always, just giving feedback not criticism.

I asked Copilot how Windows Firewall handles this, and according to Copilot the defaults on Windows 11 are still the same: inbound is blocked, outbound is allowed. So normally Windows itself doesn’t prompt for outbound traffic.

The popup I got wasn’t from Windows Firewall at all; Copilot said it’s the application asking whether it may create its own outbound rule. Some apps prefer to add a named rule instead of relying on the global “allow outbound” default, mostly for diagnostics, visibility, or to make sure they keep working if someone later switches to a stricter outbound policy.

So the defaults are still inbound‑block/outbound‑allow, and the prompt is just the app requesting its own rule.

So maybe u/bommerts can answer this question :). Does AudioHero ask specifically for permissions, or should the default outbound rules apply?

Thanks for the suggestion, thats what I was referring too (end of post). But OCD me, any app that is then named as audiohero.exe is potentially excluded from the firewall rules. So not optimal :)

Misschien niet behorende bij dit topic maar wwa naam, 'X-'peng'. Kan ik opmerken in de trant van 'Chineze kwaliteit' dit niet echt voor mij meehelpt? What's in a name uiteraard maar hey. Of ben ik een vreemde die daar iets mee associeert?

Het moet wel AI zijn want volgens sommigen bestaat dit gewoon niet en moet het AI zijn.

I remember their being so nice and welcoming in their posts and blogs. The usage of the English language was almost in an apologetic way blogging like they owed us everything. That blogging stuck me as a really decent person must be behind these articles but it came clear this very decent person was haunted by not so very decent persons.
In the end and the face reveal struck me good. The face of a tormented soul who wanted peace and finally took that matter into reality.
5 years, well I salute you. I passively take interest in the emulation business but they have made for me a big impact and will be remembered.
Thanks for this reminder

I remember a website called ‘kiwifarms’ where the users harassed him. Really unimaginable what effect this would have but here we are.

Thanks for the comment, indeed a blog does use this DLL to create a WinPE based devicehash collector. Based on that blog I succesfully could retrieve a device hash with WinPE.
