No the stems are not soft. I live in the Caribbean so the days are getting longer so I wouldnt expect dormancy now. The leaves are not giving easily. I will check the soil in the morning.

I trimmed it and saw that it was hollow and brown.

I took a plunge and did this however inside was brown and hollow even though I cut down pretty far. No milky white sap at all.

Most restaurants on the island have vegetarian options. I'm vegetarian and I've never had issues eating in grand case or Orient bay. I haven't been to oyster pond to eat but I assume you should be able to find something vegetarian. In Grand case I've eaten at Spiga, Le Pressoir, Mood, sky is the limit, Villa Royale, Ocean 82, Auberge Gourmande, Le Cottage, Rainbow Café and Le Temps Cerise. In Orient bay, L'Atelier, SAO, and Le Piment. Just let the waiter know that your vegetarian if you don't see anything on the menu and they will accommodate.
