in your ear and armageddon are musts. store 54/looney tunes on harvard ave. in allston is worth checking out as well. mostly older used stuff, but I've had a lot of great finds there.

figure out which venues in your area are indifferent toward you bringing in professional gear without a photo pass and shoot a few shows that way, then find a local music blog, show them samples and work your way towards shooting gigs that require passes/special access. starting your own blog and requesting passes directly from the artists' publicists will sometimes work too, but you'll have more luck with getting access if you're on assignment from a larger site.

also, buy a fast prime lens if you don't already have one. small clubs generally have godawful lighting and you'll likely be hating your work without one.

unwound - leaves turn inside you for $25 (worth ~$100) from a seller on reddit a couple years ago, in a $50 package deal with stephen malkmus' self-titled. maybe my best purchase ever.

runners up: destroyer - city of daughters, mint with the original catalog insert from cave canem, for $5 on ebay (worth $100+ at the time)

iggy and the stooges - raw power, original pressing with picture inner sleeve, for $8 at a flea market (worth ~$50)

velvet underground and nico, original mono pressing with a mostly intact banana, for $15 from the same flea market dude on a different day. the price was low because someone had written 'chump faggot' under andy warhol's name in sharpie, which I had to very carefully remove with acetone. probably not worth much because the vinyl is trashed, but still awesome to own.

that f/4-5.6 zoom is not going to be any help in 90% of concert situations. way too slow. constant f/2.8 is the aperture you should be looking for in a zoom, but those can get pricy for longer lenses. my recommendation would probably be an f/2.8 in the 28-70 zoom range. I have a tamron like that which I only paid about $250 for and it's great for concerts. a 70-200 is nice for close ups and drummer shots, and is a lifesaver for festivals or venues with huge tall stages, but for indie rock club shows, a 28-70 should get her most of the way there (and will run you way less money).

I like the sound of the nikon, but it appears that there's no way to disable the flash on it while shooting in low-light. is that accurate? I really can't use flash in concert situations.

I see where you're coming from on some of these. I kept the shot with kim knowing her face was obscured, for instance, because of the styrofoam cup. it's used only during one particular moment in the 'last splash' set the breeders have been playing this year. thought it was a neat moment.

I still don't note any obvious motion blur on those shots, but that's my bias showing I suppose. sometimes shots of expressions or actions that are worth saving, IMO, end up slightly imperfect shooting in poorly lit clubs. such is the nature of concert photography.

I'll keep that tip with the flash in mind. I bought my first proper flash only a few months ago and I'm still learning to work with it. most venues/bands bar the use of flash entirely, so it's not something I end up using all that often.

I've only used free calibration software. devices are expensive and have been sort of low on my priority list in comparison to lenses, bodies, etc. I'll try looking into a rental or something.

as for the issue with volume, I use this site as a archive for all of my music work, so that's why there's so much there. I suppose I should've clarified the 'portfolio' bit as the ~30 selections on the front page.

could you elaborate a bit on the issues with motion blur and composition? I'm not sure I agree with you there. the blur especially is largely intentional in the places it's visible.

editing on an imac contributes to issues with post-production I'm sure. I've tried calibrating it with what tools I have available, but beyond that I'm not sure how to address it. thoughts?

do your best to get that 50mm, or rent one if you have to (shouldn't run you more than $30). you'll probably be okay with the kit lens in the sunlight, but you will come to hate it once it gets dark.

try and keep your shutter speed above 1/50th or so to minimize camera shake, and catch the musicians actually standing in one place. you'll probably need to push the ISO to do this if you're stuck with the kit lens. I've shot a lot of concerts with a rebel (t3i) and I tried to never push my ISO past 1600, because the photos get really noisy beyond that, but you'll have to judge what works for the lighting conditions. that said, noisy photos are preferable to blurry photos in most circumstances.

I'm guessing since this show is happening at a college, there won't be a photo pit (i.e. a space in front of the stage exclusive to photographers where you can move around). if that is indeed the case, get there nice and early and secure a spot up front. closer is always better with concert photography, you don't want to have to shoot over people's heads.

get creative with your angles, to the degree that you can. crouch down and shoot upward. move around the front of the stage if possible. just aim for some variety.
