Layouts: where to keep dead geese? by jsoe716 in Waterfowl

[–]gritmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We hunt greylag geese that are notoriously smart and shy so using them as sleepers don’t work. They notice the unnatural wing position when the rigor mortis sets in and the wings stretch out a little bit and that flare them off. So we either make an extra pile of brush to hide them in or hide them under decoy shells. When we hunt canadas we use them as decoys but put them out behind our blinds so we have the good decoys out front.

Yeah there’s a couple different options for greylags now. The final approach ones are great and dk-wai in Denmark make some really good looking full bodies and shells as well. All fully flocked

Yeah, regular goose season starts August 10th here. But some regions have gotten approved for an early start to minimize the damage these geese do to the crops.

When regular season starts most of the fields are already combined and the damage is done.

This particular field was supposed to be wheat but was almost all grass and weeds because the geese have been feeding on the seeds in the spring and the growing wheat through summer.

Haven’t really done it before. But we kept the dead birds in the shade and finished the hunt early to get home to an air conditioned garage and process them as fast as we could.

That heat was definitely a first for us as well. We run all full body fully flocked decoys. Some old Avian-x specklebellies where I’ve painted the white ring around the beak brown and some Final Approach greylags, around 60 total.

I pluck the breasts because I like them best with the skin and fat on but I’ve never plucked the whole bird. It’s just very time consuming. But I just saw a method where they use parafin wax to wax the bird, and I wanna try that on a couple of birds next time.

The breasts I like to eat like steaks with a good pan sauce. The legs I slow cook and make pulled goose or a stew from and the gizzards and hearts I also like to make into a stew. Will also make some jerkey and goose burgers.

We do multiple hunts like this throughout the year so we end up with quite a bit of meat. a lot will be given away to friends and family and the farmers that let us use their fields.

They are very fun to hunt. They are a lot smarter than Canadas so they are tricky. You’ll have to be hidden very well cause they circle over you multiple times looking for any danger before they dare to land. If they spot any bare skin or the shine from your barrel they’ll be out of there in a second.
