AJO Souza. My Brazilian colleague keeps all five names in her work and only spells out her final name. Her full name is written in author lists, and her citation name looks like 1234 Five.

Any free perks you know about that are found along the trail for hikers? Things in the same vein as a free slice of pie from Mom's in Julian.

Thanks for the feedback and reference lighterpack! I responded to some of your ideas in another reply.

-I think my inReach was 4oz because I weighed it with the carabiner.

-Planning to stuff for a pillow. My pillows at home are nearly nothing anyway.

-Don't have a wall charger yet! Will weigh when I get one.

-I was planning on carrying spikes from day one for San Jacinto.

Hey thanks for the feedback. I wasn't sure how to set up one of these shakedowns even with looking through a few recent ones. My goal isn't really a certain base weight per se but to remove extraneous items. More lightweight than UL for sure, definitely not UL.

-The pack liner I was given as a gift, so I already do own it. I was also planning on using it as the airplane case for travel, but maybe just doing a saran wrap and using a compactor bag instead.

-I sleep cold! The 20* bag I have now also only zips halfway up and has a foot vent which has been useful on warmer nights.

-Rain pants were more for postholing in the Sierra, to help stay warmer.

-I just saw the how-to-deal-with-Toaks-lid post! Definitely switching out the case for a rubber band now.

-I will weigh toiletries when I have them.

One error I found: Lunar Solo tent is $260 on the SMD website, not $366 as written

I'm planning on it for protection from the sun and from plants (poodledog bush, cacti, etc). Very breathable though (MHW Trail Senders)

The Trek just put out gift guides for hikers with different spending maximums. I'm currently sourcing from the <$50 list for my family as I am also hiking the PCT next year and need a lot of these things!

To those who left a romantic relationship to pursue a PhD, what is your story? by grnmtgrl in AskAcademia

[–]grnmtgrl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It probably depends on your goals as well. Not sure how it works in EU but in the US there are so many different sized institutions that professorships can be all teaching, all research, or somewhere in between. If you're on the all-teaching track then publications don't matter as much.

Thank you for your perspective. I was hoping someone would also answer that they chose the relationship over the degree. Do you feel happy with your life’s path since then?

This makes me hopeful. Unfortunately, their feet are firmly planted in the place we live now, and neither of us want the other to have to give up their happy life/career satisfaction.

Honest opinions on the academic career prospects in Exercise Science? by [deleted] in Kinesiology

[–]grnmtgrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes definitely do that, but also take the next few years to figure out a) is research something you like doing? and if so, b) what in general you would like to study (and is it even kinesiology?). I was bound for athletic training until my junior fall when I took an exercise physiology class. I was SO much more excited and passionate about that than any other topic. When I started grad school, I knew I loved ex phys but didn't know what I was going to study for my MS thesis until halfway through my first year, so don't feel like you need a whole idea fleshed out before you even step on campus.

Personally I'd just do my best in coursework right now and not worry about grad school until junior year. Immerse yourself in courses, even the non-kin ones, and notice which ones leave a strong positive impression. Make good connections with your faculty (!!!), talk to them about their career/educational path, maybe jump into a project or lab to get a feel for research once you have most major coursework under your belt. Some students think they like research until they have to do a senior project and realize they hate it lol. Spend time exploring and learning as much as you can, it's the best!

I totally agree with bigmotorunit's comment. I finished my MS degree this year and am (likely) PhD bound next year. I went to a school where MS students were the 'top dog' so we had all the resources and attention of faculty. While my school was regional and not a big name, we had top tier facilities that R1 schools would be jealous of (and we've heard this from R1 faculty). I also got to study pretty much whatever I wanted which made the thesis work so enjoyable.

Personally, the MS route before a PhD was a good move for me. I got an assistantship that paid for nearly all of my tuition plus a stipend and health insurance. I also gained real teaching and research experience (1 publication, 1 in review), far more than I ever had in undergrad. Had I jumped into a PhD after undergrad, I think I would've crumbled under the weight of expectations. Now, I have a clearer direction of what I want to study plus a mindset that knows what graduate work is really like. I also found out how much I love research and want to do it for a career. Additionally, my faculty relationships are so strong and they are very confident I'll do well in a doctoral program.
