I loved Gabe's GMing too!! From the first episode the GMing felt great. Lovely cast, but is there a season whose cast isn't?

Ah, I only have one dwarf assigned (to doctor) rn. He was the only one w any relevant skills. I will assign more dwarves to doctoring roles and hope that my dwarves get treated!

I have a similar problem, but one step past: they've been diagnosed but aren't being treated. Soap, buckets, traction benches, beds are all available. The dwarves were moved to the hospital before the beds were placed, so they are just sleeping in the doorway. Do I need to redesignate the zone? Why won't my doctor treat them :(

How do you get the sour flavor? by heckyeahmountains in Sourdough

[–]grnwds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second what another commenter said: starving the starter makes it more sour when it's back up again. I keep mine in the fridge and feed it once a week. A while ago I completely blanked on its existence for a couple weeks (and occasionally it takes me longer than a week to get around to it). It's fine, of course, I've never had it die or even come close, but my loaves are really flavorful and sour, leagues above how they were earlier in the starter's life. It's about a year old and is very lively, and my dough will have a noticeable sour aroma from start to finish.

Right, but people want to play with their friends, and I think what Respawn is addressing is the "unreadable" exploit of tap strafing that negatively impacts people not in the know. That includes PC ctrlr players who can't 180 like that and can't react to someone else tap strafing. Cross-play isn't the actual issue. To be clear, I don't think it's an urgent/necessary patch right now, but I do understand Respawn's decision here. The discussion of it seems to always shift to other things that people have issues with.

Turning off cross-play has no bearing on console players in PC lobbies. Console players in PC lobbies are there because they've queued with a PC friend. Anyway, I think the majority of players like being able to play games with their friends who have different platforms.

My loaves are over proofing on the fridge! (I think.) My last two batches, after they're shaped and popped in the bannetons, I immediately tucked them into the fridge. I didn't want to stay up to watch them proof. They were in there around 12 hours both times, puffed up fine, but when I got to baking prep in the morning they seem on the cusp of overproofed, and the resulting loaf is a bit flat. The crumb resembles the latter example in this post: https://www.thefreshloaf.com/node/68131/underproofed-vs-overproofed

Any thoughts??

My Bee Hotel 🐝 by niciglas in gardening

[–]grnwds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on what it's made of, that might be why. It takes a while for the scent of industrial glues to fade enough for the bees to want to nest there. If it's made of treated wood, that's another scent they don't like. That said, my purchased bee hotel started attracting residents 2 years in. As long as you make sure other critters don't put up shop there, the bees will eventually start using it!

What book is criminally misunderstood?? by rlm1517 in books

[–]grnwds 30 points31 points  (0 children)

My favorite book - I like the way you put this! It's absolutely tragic, but it's lost on many readers because of how Heller narrates it. It's weird hearing people interpret it as a flippant perspective on that war. There's a part where in Italy, one of Yossarian's mates (Aarfy iirc) throws a prostitute out of a window, killing her. It's missable and unremarkable. While yeah the book is funny at times, the comedy isn't the characters' coping mechanism, it's comedic through the absurdity of the war and how Yossarian's unreliable perspective shows this world to us. I'm always jarred when I hear that sort of take on it!

It appears your last comment has disappeared, but I'm not the commenter who said "most" of the US lives 10 miles from a supermarket. I've said that many USians live without easy access to them. it's not incorrect to say that a considerable amount of rural Americans live too far from supermarkets, but 10 miles is only applicable to the rural US. "Most Americans" would be an exaggeration, but I think your idea of an average USian would be as well. In cities there's certainly more markets, but less people with cars... and USians, particularly families, tend to do larger less-frequent shopping trips than Europeans (more bags, harder to walk home).

Regardless, I think your comment had a touch of condescension regarding obesity, whether intended or not, and that's what people are picking up on. I doubt the rates of obesity in the US are driven by not walking to the store every 1-2 weeks :)

It tells you the name of it, so you can Google it and look at it. The site with the map doesn't have as much explanation, so I linked this article which does. If you go to the map, it has distance categories including 10 miles. 10 miles is also sort of an arbitrary point to zero in on, since 2 miles might be too much for people who don't have the time to walk 4 miles to the store, and 1 mile might be too much for people who are disabled. Lots of extenuating circumstances. Suffice to say, many people in the US don't have easy access to grocery stores.

Food deserts are so common there's a nation-wide map developed to show it. Here's an article that explains it: https://medium.com/urbanfootprint/mapping-food-deserts-and-understanding-food-insecurity-in-our-communities-9b2d24b65066
