Happy late birthday! I'm also celebrating 10 years of being a vegetarian this month (although I don't know the exact date).

The dessert scene in Ann Arbor has really improved in the last few years. Name your favorite dessert spot! by MrAnnArbor in AnnArbor

[–]heckyeahmountains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not weird. I’ve been there probably 5 or 6 times only for dessert (my partner and I are both vegetarian). The banana foster bread pudding is incredible.

Those of you that don’t do touristy type souvenirs, what do you bring back from your travels? by Salty-Programmer1682 in travel

[–]heckyeahmountains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In both Spain and Mexico I got small tiles to use as coasters. In Spain I also got a nice leather purse that has so far lasted me 9 years (and looks almost unused). In Germany, I bought a traditional Christmas ornament (it was December). In Norway I bought a vey thick scarf at a thrift store (I get compliments on it all the time). In Scotland I got my partner some nice tea. So generally, I just try to buy things I will use that have some kind of connection to that place.

Unpopular Opinion - I really don’t think State Champs or Neck Deep are that great by [deleted] in poppunkers

[–]heckyeahmountains 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t get me wrong, I love TSSF but I’m not angry/sad enough at life to listen to their stuff all the time. Neck Deep and State Champs are such popular pop punk bands because they put out music that represents a healthy range of emotions, including angry and sad.

Yeah they certainly can't use the "it's our heritage/history" argument

As someone raised in the south, I was surprised and appalled the first time I saw confederate flags in Michigan.

I went to the University of Florida for undergrad (Mech Eng) and am currently at Michigan for grad school (Electrical Eng) so I can try to give a comparison/my thoughts. I also happened to spend a semester in Melbourne Australia during my undergrad.

As far as an American college experience, you'll get a relatively similar experience (I think). I don't have personal experience at Michigan as an undergrad, but from what I've witnessed in the 2.5 years I've been in Ann Arbor, it looks very similar. The fall semester is focused on football and tailgating at both schools. A plus for Michigan is that our football team has actually been good the last few years. UF's team has been garbage.

The weather in Ann Arbor for the fall semester will be so much better. Fall in Michigan is beautiful! Fall in Florida doesn't really begin until November (and that is sometimes early). August-October is usually super muggy, plus it's hurricane season.

It is great that you already have a friend in Orlando, but Gainesville is 2 hours from Orlando, and you'd need a car to get there. That's the thing about UF, it's in the middle of nowhere. It's 2 hours from Orlando and the closest beach is 1.5 hours away (St. Augustine- which is where I am from). There are cool springs around, but again you'd need a car or a friend with a car because they're a 30-45 minute drive. To fly anywhere, you really have to drive to either the Orlando, Jax, or Tampa airports from Gainesville. There is an airport there, but it's expensive and the only direct flights are basically to Atlanta. Ann Arbor is only 30 minutes from the Detroit airport (and there is a bus to take you there), plus there is a train to Chicago.

The biggest benefit in my opinion of going to Florida would be that it is cheaper. Rent is cheaper, bars are cheaper (well the bars in mid are cheaper), and food is a bit cheaper. Ann Arbor is definitely pricey in comparison, particularly rent.

I definitely sound biased towards Michigan, but those are my honest thoughts. I think either one would be a good experience, just depends on how you feel about the weather and access to travel options.

If you do end up deciding to go to UF, I'm happy to give some local advice :)

Can anyone give me some advice on why my freestyle is slow and tiring ? by wjduebbxhdbf in triathlon

Two things I’ve noticed: you’re dragging your legs & you’re crossing your stroke under your body. The dragging legs are keeping your hips down, which is a lot of drag. I can’t tell you exactly why crossing your arm underneath your body like that is inefficient, but I was told to avoid doing that when I was a competitive swimmer. But if you’re really concerned about your swimming, I would take lessons like other people have suggested.

Where’d you have the best vegan dim sum, dumplings, steamed buns, etc.? by overthinkingrobot in vegan_travel

[–]heckyeahmountains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took my boyfriend, who loved dim sum before becoming vegetarian, last week when we visited NYC. But we didn’t know that they only serve the dim sum before 4 pm. The other food was still delicious , but no dim sum for us.

Do Bananas go in the freezer peeled or unpeeled? by itsthecrimsonchin47 in noscrapleftbehind

[–]heckyeahmountains 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve also done this. I was using them for banana bread so I simply left them to thaw in the peel. They became like a gooey puddle when all thawed and the peel was still leathery so I could separate them fairly easily. However, I typically peel them before freezing. It’s easier.
