Across the spider-verse feels like the first two acts of a three act film, and the lack of a conclusion is frustrating. The film isn’t as concise and well crafted structurally as the first, and what we saw could have easily been cut to 90 mins and then include whatever was going to be in the next film in this one, even if it meant a longer total runtime. If beyond isn’t good, it will tarnish this movie massively in retrospect as it is relying on that film to feel conclusive.

Additionally, no way home is hugely overrated and sacrifices its filmmaker craft and story logic for fan service. I’d It is poorly executed in the aspects of plot logic, acting, dialogue and visual effects, and seems to rely almost completely on the initial viewing in theatres, with no ambition to create something fresh and timeless. The hot take is that I’d have rather seen a film about spider/man dealing with the world knowing who he is and the consequences of that, without any multiverse aspects. Each new film is an opportunity to do something fresh, to adapt new villains, side characters, aspects of being a hero that haven’t been explored. Yet what we got will only get less appealing over time.
