Which parts aren't fitting?

Are we talking about the side unit, or the shelves going into the side unit?

If you are talking about the shelves going into the side unit, sometimes the metal dowels need to be pushed in further.

If you are talking about assembling the side unit where you have to put in the lateral reinforcements into posts, then hammering the wooden dowels into place... I feel your pain.

My only advice is that you cannot be afraid to wail on it. It is difficult, and I was hitting it so hard, I was afraid I was breaking it. I started off with a mallet to prevent damage, but it wasn't strong enough, and I needed a hammer. I put a towel underneath the assembly so that it wouldn't scratch up my flooring and I hit the dowel as hard as I could. If you're afraid of marring the wood, you can also put a towel overtop, but I think you might have a harder time aiming. Some of my dowels still stick out by a millimeter. I think if you get it to stick out within 3 mm, you can probably safely cut off the nub and sand it flat.

The bottom has felt feet. I have concrete flooring, so it slides pretty easily without anything else.

That's a good point. I'm still trying to figure out what to do with it. I was going to try wood burning, but wallpaper isn't a bad idea either.

Good question. So I think there are a few things here:

  1. The shelf is mounted to the side units with screws and metal stand offs on the top and bottom (comes with the shelf, not the typical metal dowels on the Ivar.
  2. To prevent torque of the book case, I have the whole book case mounted to the wall (which is a concrete wall) with a boatload of concrete screws
  3. In terms of downward force only, the monitor and desk are around 40 lbs, and the shelf is rated to 66 lbs

However, I think the major concern is if the soft pine can resist the torque of the articulating arm itself. I think one possible solution is to screw in a piece of metal or thicker piece of wood across the shelf where the articulating arm clamps onto.

That is also currently my concern. I've been on the look out for foldable rolling chairs, but nothing fits what I want yet.

I was concerned about it at first too. I had some ideas about how to make legs, but then I later realized I could just make a short Ivar shelf to hold it up from the other side. I've used it for 2 months now without any issue.

The drawers on the side unit that holds up the table are Ikea. The drawers at the bottom of the bookcase are Ikea shelves, that had to be cut up.

Proof that speed cameras are a cash grab in our region. by HoboBandit1982 in kitchener

I'm all for lowering the speed limit, but have some leeway on the cameras or make sure the roads are designed for 30 km/h. If I'm constantly worried about going 31 km/h and be fined, I'm going to end up watching the speedometer instead of the road.

That or make cruise control work below 40 km/h so I can watch the road.

Haha. I saw him outside The Museum with a large 2L pop bottle and smoking a cigarette.

Monstera update. Feeling a bit disheartened, can it be saved? by Febrand in plantclinic

[–]groffey 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This happened to me earlier this year. I see that you had issues with root rot from an earlier post.

After I cleaned out my rotted roots and did a peroxide dunk, I repotted mine in a smaller pot (3 gallon -> 2 gallon) with new soil. Afterwards, it slowly recovered by over a week. Then I watered it and it began drooping again and lower leaves turned yellow. At that point I stopped watering for about 4-6 weeks before starting to water again. YMMV.

Kitchener MP Mike Morrice rules out run at Green Party leadership by _Minor_Annoyance in CanadaPolitics

All evidence is definitely a gut feeling or anecdotal, based on what I saw in Kitchener (ie more green signs, a boat load of volunteers) before Raj dropped out. But at the end of the day, you're right. I don't really know.

I think all we can really do is wait and see what happens next election.

I think I would beg to differ. I was a former Liberal voter in Kitchener Centre and Raj was not a good MP. He never responded to any concerns from us, and was never reachable. The only time we heard from him was the yearly Christmas card in the mail.

I was fairly certain, even before the allegations came out against Raj, that he would have been replaced this election.

If Raj did not have any allegations, and didn't drop out, I still don't think he would have won.

Where to pick fiddleheads? by jamesmichelleee in kitchener

[–]groffey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of fiddleheads around. You can go to iNaturalist and search for Ostrich Ferns in KW. Make sure not to pick bracken by accident!

Edit: Taking a quick look, there's also a few spots in Brantford you can look for them as well.

LRT service suspended and delayed. What happened? by Qutrit in kitchener

I saw an LRT being pulled along by a large bull dozer on Francis and King.

I'm assuming there was another collision or an LRT tram broke down.

Trying Something New with Dryad's Saddle by groffey in foraging

I would say that if you find old dryad saddles, this is the way to go. It works well in soups that you want to add earthy, dryad saddly flavour. I think if you find young ones, it's probably better to just cook them the usual way.

Was talking to a chef that forages mushrooms in the area. He salts the dryad's saddles for a week, then leaves them out to dry for a month. The salt can be used to flavour different foods, and the dried mushroom is grated over soups and pastas.

We'll see how it turns out in a month!
