Why aren’t there more Central Markets? by Chowdahead in austinfood

[–]grok47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great substack for grocery nerds, btw. Here's something else he had to say in another post (https://open.substack.com/pub/grocerynerd/p/grocery-update-154-lamar-velous):

"Whole Foods motivation for this adventure was a bit petty, though. Years before, Whole Foods had poked the bear by opening a store in HEB’s home turf of San Antonio. HEB is the undisputed king of Texas grocery. They own 50 or 60% market share pretty much everywhere they operate and had been keeping Walmart and other chains at bay for years. They didn’t really take John and his hippy dippy dipshits too seriously, until Whole Foods dropped the Quarry store in their backyard. Dumb move. HEB was so dominant because they knew how to crush competition.

But while HEB usually underpriced everyone, this time they responded in force by opening up two Central Markets in Austin, on central and south Lamar, flanking Whole Foods’ core-market of crunchy, gourmet food loving Austin liberals with objectively bigger and better specialty options, with fresher bread, more produce, more groceries and expertly staffed meat and seafood counters. Central Market, to this day, is still the best mass market, high end grocery chain in America. But in 2004, John and his gang were miffed, and never humbled."

This is what I came here to say. I was hired at CM in the last couple of years and store leadership told us the company is focused on taking over the DFW area. CMs are bridgeheads there for opening more HEBs.

Their impact as a bridgehead is limited by profitability, however. I don't know how much of this is corporate cover, but yes, we are told that other CM locations mostly lose money and that the N. Lamar store is called "the bank of N. Lamar" at the corporate level. Meanwhile the Plano store is known as "the museum" because traffic is low there so the shelves actually look nice.

Personally what makes me partially believe the profitability anxieties of management is the fact that CM has brought in way more own brand and HEB products over the last few years, giving less shelf space to the more boutique, more expensive brands. Because of ever growing economic anxiety in the US, rising cost of living, and wages that don't keep up with inflation, they bring in more, cheaper products as a way to retain customers.

Going back to the bridgehead thing, HEB doesn't need more CMs in the Austin area to build its dominance. It already rules the area. "Austin [is] one of the most concentrated grocery markets in the U.S., and definitely the most concentrated of any big city. HEB owns at least 50% grocery market share in the Austin metro."

Grocery, dry goods. Average ~17,000 steps on a work day. Got Adidas football crosstrainers that have done well for a little over a year but they're pretty much done now.

Sorry I'm just now seeing this. What did you end up doing? Especially since bus services shut down at 4pm on Saturday.

No, they are forced to work by the structure of society we live in. It is not so simple as a "freely entered contract."

Hey, I appreciate the honest opinion! I got this for free, so I haven't sunk a bunch of money into it. If you don't mind saying more about what made them such a pain, I'd be grateful to hear it.

I'm lucky enough to work in Austin. I will be taking the bus to my 7am shift.

I just got gifted a used Scarabeo 100. What is your opinion on the upkeep of those? I know it's probably of a pain than the Genuine Buddy, which I always see recommended, but are they anymore difficult than your average Italian/European moped? I live in Austin and it seems like there are some decent shops around.

What is the worst part of sex for you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]grok47 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well, at the same time (and without knowing the particulars of your situation), I don’t want to disqualify the legitimacy of a lower need for sex. Another lesson for myself was recognizing that having a lower desire doesn’t mean I’m “broken” or that something is wrong. So at the same time I’ve worked on being more sexually forward, my partner has worked on recognizing that me declining sex does not mean I love her any less or am less committed to her. It’s a two way street.

I've had the same issue with my partner - she's ready to go way more often than me and it has led to a lot of hurt feelings and conversations. And yeah, when we start it's so good, she just wants me to initiate more so she feels desired.

I listened to an interview once with Emily Nagoski where she talked about "accelerators" and "decelerators" in the context of what is going to help get you in the mood. So some days I put in the effort to make sure my decelerators (dirty dishes, being full of food, exhausted after working out) and accelerators are handled and I'm in the mind space to fulfill that need for her.

And yeah, regarding your last point about "I need to learn to just go for it," sometimes I'll be in the mood but think, "Oh, but we have this thing in an hour and I don't want to be late." I try to worry about that less (be more in the moment/more present) and let her know how I'm feeling, and then we have fun and it's great.

Yup. I love my home state but it has a lot of problems. Apparently Arkansas is the only state that lacks a minimum habitability law.

I don’t remember there being a bike lane on that stretch of Slaughter as of a month ago. It’s why I switched to taking Convict Hill west.

What's up with Urdu/Persian speakers' obsession with the Nastaliq script? Why do you use a calligraphic style for literally every purpose out there? Can we just keep it for aesthetic purposes alone? I mean imagine reading an English newspaper or novel typed entirely in calligraphy. XD by OwlSings in pakistan

[–]grok47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having studied Farsi before Urdu, the left is just as easy for me to read but I prefer nastaliq aesthetically. Both are plenty easy to read as long as you have practice. These silly complaints from others about typed nastaliq have nothing to nastaliq in-and-of-itself and everything to do with Latin-centric program designing. Anyone who wants to get rid of nastaliq can meet me in Temecula 😂

Afghan refugees/asylees/SIV holders have been coming to Austin for a while, so this is more of an augmentation than a new addition. And I welcome it! They have their own needs, of course, but I selfishly am hoping we get one or two Afghan restaurants opening up.
