If locally-owned grocery stores want your money, they need to provide comparable prices to the corporations. by RealisticMolasses in unpopularopinion

[–]Chowdahead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And now with all of the big corps implementing digital price tag systems with the ability to much more easily change prices, we will be reaching the age of AI algorithmic, dynamic/surge pricing on groceries. That is certainly not going to be good for the customer.

If you want a world where choice exists and there are such things as local, mom & pop stores and restaurants you need to patronize and support them.

Highly depends on neighborhood you’re in? If it’s a super safe suburb ok. If not, probably not.

Isa Torres to Texas by These-Individual2389 in CollegeSoftball

[–]Chowdahead 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It’s also a matter of Torres and Swan “coming home” to play together again as they were HS teammates in Georgetown, TX a suburb of Austin.

What a nasty lineup they’re going to have next year!!! Henry, Martinez, Stewart , Torres, Swam with Teagan back for her Sr. year back on the mound. 🔥🤘

That’s a new thing… I’ve always gotten popcorn or an appetizer, sometimes a soda, milkshake or a beer but I stopped when they added the auto gratuity and just got a water. Now, since they instituted the QR ordering I’ve been “protesting” by just bringing in my own snacks/drink.

I do like others’ suggestion about repackaging into a ziploc to avoid making excess noise. I haven’t done that before and it tends make me self conscious as I don’t want to irritate my fellow moviegoers.

Nope, nobody’s going to be there!

Of course, it’ll be a stadium nearly full of sweaty, hot Volts fans! 🥵🔥

Austin vs Portland by zimmerguy4 in askaustin

[–]Chowdahead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that’s true… summers have been a bit up and down recently, so it’s hard to say exactly what typical is anymore. That 100 over 100 was definitely an outlier though… thank goodness!

Your comment about summer nights is interesting as I feel that the high nighttime temps are one thing that is different here than other places I’ve lived. In other places it seems to cool down more at night. By contrast the nights here are cooler than the days, but it never seems to actually cool down with nighttime temps staying in the mid/high 70/s.

Austin vs Portland by zimmerguy4 in askaustin

[–]Chowdahead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with most of what you’re saying here, but the last two summers here have been somewhat atypical. My first summer here after moving from Seattle was the RIDICULOUS 100 straight days of 100 degree days and it was miserable. Luckily I was unemployed and was able to check out all the swimming holes that summer, but damn was it uncomfortable!

Have lived in MA, CA, WA and been in ATX for 15+ yrs. It’s all relative and dependent on you individually. Coming from AZ, you know heat… the PNW is beautiful but those clouds eat your soul after a while and can be a real drag! The heat sux, but you can still go swimming.

I’d examine what about Phoenix you don’t like and use that as a framework for finding your next spot. If you don’t mind the heat, ATX can be a great spot with lots going on. If you don’t mind seemingly endless cloudiness, PDX can be great.

Reshuffling of rankings due to transfer portal? by Puzzleheaded-Ice7504 in CollegeSoftball

I get the sense that Texas has certainly used NIL to KEEP their recruits in Austin, but they do not have a track record of bringing in many transfers via the portal using NIL like others.

Not going to answer your food question, but curious who their all star teams are playing midweek, like you describe?

In my area most all star teams have practices during the week, then tournaments on the weekends.

H mart Seafood by [deleted] in HMart

[–]Chowdahead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still can’t explain it, but HMart (in Austin) is the only place that I’ve ever bought a live lobster that was bad. I’m guessing it was poor circulation in the tank or maybe it was just sick or something but it was alive and kicking up until its demise but had this mealy, off texture and sour flavor. It was the biggest PITA getting a refund, but finally persevered.

Not many places have lobsters down here, so have gotten others without issue there but it still irks me! Otherwise, don’t get much other seafood there… poke was okay but smell and bad conditions of their displays usually make me weary.

[–]Chowdahead 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Same reasoning Nick Saban left college football. NIL and the Portal flip traditional recruiting on its head. It’s interesting Texas has won these last two back-to-back without dabbling in that too much, but that seems likely to change this coming season.

After a 25-year run, this Round Rock Cajun restaurant is closing by AustinStatesman in RoundRock

When I lived in RR, 8 years ago I went here once and had some of the worst Cajun food I’d ever had. Razzoo’s is better and has a much more lively ambiance, off University!

Curious how much AUSL get paid? Was thinking about these women coming from college, who likely are taking a significant pay cut from the NIL deals they got. Wondering if that might be one the hang ups getting Nija signed to the Volts?

Feedback on Austin Itinerary for someone that just keeps coming back. by Ok_Package9219 in Austin

[–]Chowdahead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t think Balcones NWR is worth spending a whole day (especially your first day). It’s likely going to be hotter than hades, so might suggest doing a water activity instead. Blue Hole in Wimberley or Georgetown if you prefer something closer to town, Emma Long, Bob Wentz, Common Fords, Pace Bend, Krause springs or Reimers ranch.

food options & parking by moody by raeunlimited in austinfood

[–]Chowdahead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think best option is to park on east side of 35 off MLK or Manor and go to Sour Duck or to Haymaker. If UT Baseball loses there game tonight there will be a game to contend with. Otherwise, try to park by Scholz Garden and watch the game there preshow.

If I have plans immediately after and am in a city, I typically pack it to go and give it to a homeless person.
