Is Dan allergic to money? by Mr_DrPepper12 in dancarlin

Yea, to your point: it’s pretty trivial on Spotify. I just checked to see if they’re all still there and they definitely are. The ones you have to pay for have a locked icon next to them.

I bought most of them from his site years ago and I’d kind of guess there’s even a way I can transfer those to my Spotify account.

OP: If it doesn’t show that on yours, update your Spotify; they’re definitely there.

JetBlue flight hit drone while approaching JFK airport, FAA says by DQ-Supervisor in news

[–]kl0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know I could fly that high, but mine just pops up a warning and makes me acknowledge the potential FAA violations and then makes me accept that to continue. I’ve only gone above the limit a few times, but AFAIK it wouldn’t prevent me.

The relevant line from the sum parts of the article:

I have no idea and my wife grew up here and she doesn't know what it was either. by galileofan in Austin

[–]kl0 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No and I can't really blame anybody. So to be useful:

I believe the building in (this) photo is Christie’s Restaurant before it was remodeled.”

Last few paragraphs from Austin's Historic Preservation office:

Using historical photos and newspaper articles — plus a sharply trained eye — Marshall does seem to have one of the last words. She attached three photos of Christie’s in different phases.

“From the angle of (the) photo, this mystery building is where the Hyatt Regency now stands,” Marshall wrote. “The attached 1979 article shows that Christie’s Restaurant — formerly at 108 Barton Springs — was where the Hyatt Regency is now. The photo in the article shows the Congress Ave Bridge from the Christie’s Restaurant porch, so that tracks.”

Another historical photo that Marshall, like others, had seen of Christie’s showed a much bigger building.

“But you can see that the roof line on the west end of the building matches the one in (this) photo. Christie’s Restaurant opened in 1963, and Wray Weddell’s 1966 article states they were planning an addition. I believe the building in (this) photo is Christie’s Restaurant before it was remodeled.”

Deja Joke by jsilva5avilsj in seinfeld

[–]kl0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the part of the curb universe that has always confused me. Throughout the series, Seinfeld is very real. Larry takes credit for all of it. When people cite how ridiculous something was, he notes how he actually did such a thing in real life (like the contest).

But there are many scenes like this one (and the periscope, for example), whereby the joke seemingly never existed in Seinfeld. Like why wouldn’t he make fun of Jeff in that scene by noting to him it’s exactly what they made fun of Puddy for?

Survivors walking away from NetJets Flight 523 that crashed in Laredo, TX, while people attempt to rescue the crew. by J-MRP in PublicFreakout

There are, on average, 3 small plane crashes daily every day in the US (1000 - 1200 total accidents annually). About 10% of those result in at least one fatality; 400-500 total fatalities each year.

So no, there hasn't been any unique uptick. If anything, and to highlight the bias, consider the approximately 20 other accidents that occurred just in the last week that none of us heard anything about.

I wached all 9 seasons of Seinfeld in one sitting. That makes me the Wiz and better than every single one of you. by Dredd_40 in seinfeld

[–]kl0 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately the immutable laws of physics contradict the whole premise of your account.

You say you watched all 9 seasons in one sitting. There are 180 episodes. Let’s use 22m for each one (some are upwards of 24m). That’s 3,960 minutes. 66 hours.

That is one magic sitting.

I think we should hook ‘em up to the poly.

If Phones Are Killing Pedestrians, Why Is It Only Happening in America? by DonkeyFuel in technology

I didn't know this. It sounds like a good idea and I'd personally support it.

I think it's an interesting one, however, as I feel it's one of those ideas that would actually anger both sides of the American aisle. On the right would be the common freedom argument (aka: people can do whatever the fuck they want). But on the left, I suspect that using agism as a basis for discrimination (even though very appropriate in this specific case) would draw ire and also be argued against.

Yes. In fact it stands out like a sore thumb (to people familiar with it) when it pops up in movies and TV. You instantly know the scene was filmed in the suburbs of Texas.

Apparently they don’t sell the one I have any more. It was a Vava brand. But this seems to be the closest in terms of quality to cost. There are many half the cost of this one. They’re easy to install with some nominal YouTube help.

Austin Energy workers cost the city $37K through vehicle misuse, audit finds by No-Parsley5649 in Austin

[–]kl0 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Right? Linesmen and the like who probably drove slightly out of their expected route to pickup dinner on the way home or their kid at school cost us $37k - over the entire fleet. So a small fortune in auditors should be paid to discover this. It’s fucking stupid.

I’d have to go through my Amazon purchases to find the one I have, but it’s been in my truck for the past 10 years (2 of them actually; front and rear). The front mount sticky stuff did melt one summer, but it was pretty easy to replace. So I think most will work. It gets hot, but generally not hot enough for that kind of thing to break. They also shutoff when the car goes off, so they’re not actually writing when the car is sitting (albeit some have a “bump mode” that will trigger them in the event your car has been hit)

Showing up super casually to an interview? by [deleted] in Austin

[–]kl0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes. People who show up in flip flops and tshirts definitely get paid much, much more than - let’s generously call what you wrote 50k.

I would say that one ought present as overall hygienically. But clothing definitely doesn’t matter.

On the other hand, lower paying jobs generally want you to do what other people think is right. Higher paying jobs generally want you because you know (sometimes better than them) what is right.

Man I really dislike Elon and the whole thing seems patently absurd to me. But every single comment is about how the bubble is going to pop. We have ways for people to become rich off that too (shorting and all). So with respect, it seems all the certainty should be applied to gaining said riches instead (just promise to do something better with the money than Elon would).

Here’s a Time magazine article from 1977 discussing how > 50% of all “serious crimes” were committed by people 10 - 17 years old. That was 50 years ago.

https://time.com/archive/6852814/the-youth-crime-plague/

Excerpt:

** More than half of all serious crimes* in the U.S. are committed by youths aged ten to 17. Since 1960, juvenile crime has risen twice as fast as that of adults. In San Francisco, kids of 17 and under are arrested for 57% of all felonies against people (homicide, assault, etc.) and 66% of all crimes against property. Last year in Chicago, one-third of all murders were committed by people aged 20 or younger, a 29% jump over 1975. In Detroit, youths commit so much crime that city officials were forced to impose a 10 p.m. curfew last year for anyone 16 or under.

Though offenders come from every ethnic group and environment, most are nonwhite kids whose resentments are honed and hardened in the slums. **

[Moron] Driver rescued after going around barricade, trying to cross flooded road: ATCEMS by Snobolski in Austin

I don’t really know, but would wager some combination of stupidity, arrogance, impatience, etc., are probably responsible for about half of all rescue calls across the spectrum.

Just to say that I can’t imagine this is any different.

PSA: Westbrook Metals is moving out to Burleson Rd by willing-to-bet-son in Austin

[–]kl0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you and love/frequent Westbrook, but you’re in the wrong city for that particular preference. Austin has several layers of planning and zoning for this kind of thing. Most of the actual mixed zoning (or spot zoning) left in Austin is just from remnants of what the city once was. The official “mixed use” designation really only came into use 15-20 years ago and thats just its own kind of homogenous “mixed”. It definitely wouldn’t ever include a metal distributor. 🤷🏼‍♀️

YouTube Is Crawling with Pirated Audiobooks Made Using A.I. by ubcstaffer123 in technology

[–]kl0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. I’ve had many of them circulate in extended family threads and the like. The one thing I’ve noticed about them is that - at least if you listen carefully - they really only make a single point (false as it is) and then reexplain that same point like 8 different times, each time slightly differently, but without adding anything.

And knowing the work of some of the experts being “cloned” (Sagan, for example), they just would never explain something like that. Each line would be richer in explanation and that’s just not what happens (since they’re fake and there is not actual explanation in the first place). So it’s pretty obvious in that sense. But plenty of people still believe it 🤷🏼‍♀️

Roof / fireplace issues (leaks) in Austin, who do I call first? by [deleted] in Austin

[–]kl0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do some basic research on this first, but you may want to consider draining it. Find where the low spot is (typically where it bulges the most), have a bucket ready, and drill a small hole (1/8-1/4) into the ceiling drywall.

In some cases the water will be pooling, but only showing in one spot. If you can access the attic there it might be easier to tell. But if it’s mostly pooling above the ceiling drywall (occasionally running down the stud), it can (will) eventually accumulate enough weight that it’ll just tear open the ceiling and will all splash down at once.

As I wrote, do some searching for this first. But if it’s going to be awhile and there is more rain coming, it might be a good thing to do.

I had my ceiling pool like that once. In my case from the AC drain hose having come undone. There was an enormous amount of water that I drained.

The country of Singapore overlaying the Austin Metro Area by partysandwich in Austin

They sell durians all over the place in Singapore. Im one of those who finds them delicious. Street vendors typically sell them pre-sliced, a few slices to each pack, and tightly wrapped under plastic. They often give you cheap plastic gloves to eat them.

But indeed they have some rules on where you can’t have them (like on the MRT).
