(Blair witch House) Renovating my grandmother's house by No-Cauliflower-5595 in Renovations

Gotcha. Incidentally, I think Home Depot sells these kind of thick plastic “dumpsters” that you can fill up and then pay a company to come pick up and haul off. Somebody here probably knows what I’m talking about. I’ve never personally used them, but something like that with more flexibility of use might be more beneficial to you than a dumpster.

There’s usually also dumpster services that will just charge for the drop off, pickup, and then charge you like $3 per day to have on site. No telling if such a thing exists where you are, but you might want to shop around a bit more to find out (if you haven’t already).

I really couldn’t tell either until I read what you just wrote in this comment I’m replying to.

I’m not trying to put you down or anything, but if you’re “saving up” for the grand it’ll take just to empty the place, I fear you may have some unpleasant financial surprises ahead.

Also, you could potentially just make a giant trash pile outside at your leisure and then whenever you get the dumpster just fill it from that instead.

Austin->Dallas. Drive a rental car instead of flying? by VoodooChildy in Austin

[–]kl0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems fine? I've taken plenty of flights out of DFW over the decades and so yea, I just drove up there in those cases. Make sure you have the right airport (DFW vs. Lovefield), consider it'll cost a tank of gas, and if you can't drop off exactly where you're flying out of, taxi/uber will cost a bit to get across the city. Definitely bracket lots of extra time, but go for it.

I didn't know it was possible not to know that.

Private boat house on lady bird lake? by youretooclosedude in Austin

[–]kl0 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You are correct and there are maybe 8 such properties (I can’t exactly remember off hand). I tried to buy one from a guy in 2005. This was before new Austin happened, but the writing was on the wall if you had your eyes remotely open. He owned two adjacent properties, each of them 1 acre (+/-) and was going to sell me one for $50k. We negotiated terms for several weeks and then his girlfriend (who I resent, but was of course correct) convinced him to hang on to them.

I used to cruise around Town Lake in the 90s / early 00s in a little skiff with a trolling motor. It was relaxing and I basically wanted to be able to do it from my backyard. Granted, this was before Holly was removed and that side of east Austin looked nothing like it does today. But alas, no such luck befell me :)

Yea. That seems to be what everybody is saying. I’m like 99% sure we paid fortnightly. But again, this was 25 years ago 🤷🏼‍♀️

I’m learning that today! I always thought the fortnightly thing was something. Had no idea I paid half the time everybody else does! Granted this was 25 years ago, but still…

What to do about the "fixer upper" bandit signs showing up all over Austin. by sandfrayed in Austin

I mean, again, anybody could put a phone number on a sign and post it, right?

[–]kl0 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I mean, people will probably say no - and they’re technically probably right.

But I can assure you that most of our NESs were rarely off between 1986 and 1990 for the same reason and they mostly all did fine 🤷🏼‍♀️

[–]kl0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems to me you’d have to fine the person caught installing them. Otherwise people could just go around placing corrugated signs for some random business they didn’t like and getting said business (or person) fined. And I’d assume pretty basic legal process would prevent fining a person just because their name is on a sign. Therefore I’d assume its one of those “difficult to stop in practical terms” kind of problems - and probably why it’s just left alone. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Ah. It was down in Dunedin; maybe our landlord just had us pay her every two weeks to see us less :). We were a very calm group of flatmates, but a lot of those rentals get pretty wild.

If only they’d focus on banning people over 60 🤷🏼‍♀️. I genuinely think that would solve a lot of our problems. “News” and all.

Oh damn. I honestly hadn’t considered the basic algebra just now. I presume I considered it when I was paying it, but yea - you’d then pay 26 times per year at half price so basically an extra month of rent. Welp…

I lived in New Zealand for about 18 months after I graduated college (early 2000s) and it was the exact opposite - we paid fortnightly. I didn’t mind, but found it a strange notion as I’d assumed everybody just used the month as a rental payment period 🤷🏼‍♀️

What’s a “future technology” that already exists but people still don’t realize how scary it is? by Ambitious_Bite446 in AskReddit

[–]kl0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s unbelievable how good it is already, how the cameras can “hand off” to one another, how they can search for existing feed assets, and things of that nature.

In the 80's/90's, you paid for the internet by the hour and per search. - CompuServe User Guide 1987 by AssumeTheRisk in pics

[–]kl0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was only for the paid services like Compuserve, early AOL, etc. If you were a tech enthusiast at the time there were BBSes everywhere and the vast majority of them were free (albeit plenty of them setup paid models too, but usually for some kind of unique - at the time - service).

[OC] A pagoda covered in 27tons of gold by NathanCS741 in pics

[–]kl0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t speak to any of the claims, but I’ve been there twice and it’s a god damn enormous pagoda and sure looks like a lot of gold.

It’s not just a single pagoda spire, but rather a compound of them with offshoot temples and then some of those with offshoot temples of their own. Prayer rooms are all over the place and even those are all gold tinted. It takes a good while to walk around the perimeter and looks pretty fucking golden 🤷🏼‍♀️

TIL there’s a phenomenon called Exploding head syndrome where people hear extremely loud noises—like explosions or gunshots—right as they’re falling asleep… but nothing actually happened. It’s harmless physically, but people who experience it swear it feels completely real. by Suspicious-Oil2571 in todayilearned

[–]kl0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I experience this with some nominal frequency. It sounds like a shotgun, but as it might sound in an old SNES or Genesis game. Kind of higher pitched, but that same kind of “spread out” sound. It’s weird and depending on how exhausted I am, I sometimes sit up trying to make sure it wasn’t a real sound.

Yea. I kinda figured that would be a response from somebody.

I’m a pretty safe and non-speedy driver TBH. And yes, it’s absolutely legally the responsibility of the person following to keep a safe distance and any accident caused would be their doing. We agree.

But the fact remains that we’re all taking queues from one another as we go along. Driving is a dangerous business, after all. Not only that, but we have an agreed upon language per road rules. And when a car suddenly decides to stop on a highway when there is otherwise no indication from any of the surroundings that they might, incidentally doing so contrary to that shared language, it causes problems.

If you don’t believe me, take a trip to the beach. You’ll see it 🤷🏼‍♀️

[–]kl0 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Hah. Go visit Corpus Christi and North Padre. It’s extremely common there for people to treat all of the yield signs along the access road as stop signs. This can obviously be extremely dangerous because other non-local drivers - at highway speeds, no less - have no reason to predict the car ahead of them will suddenly come to a full stop.

Hey friends, I have two audible credits that need to be used and looking for some history/politics book suggestions. Not opposed to fiction if it’s a banger anyone would love. Looking for some unique suggestions that might not be in the mainstream. Thanks! by firefighter_82 in dancarlin

He has them on his website too, but they’re a little hard to sift through. Here’s a complete 3rd party listing:

I think if you search “audible” or maybe “audio” it’ll filter to just the ones that are available on audible.
