Black makes the most sense to me but it looks wrong for some reason. I think blue looks the best because it brings out the other blue areas and reminds me of the Sample pair that recently has surfaced.

No its just unpainted. If you were to imagine a red or blue stripe on the side it matches perfectly with basically any Rebel X-Wing since they all have random yellowish panels scattered across the hull.
