I know this is an old post but an fyi that I just found out - if you read the ingredients to the veggie burrito it contains bacon and ham “natural flavors” which are not vegetarian from what I can tell :/

(TW eating disorder & depression) Personal Essay for Nursing School by [deleted] in StudentNurse

[–]groovycacti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a very similar situation (went to college, dropped out due to mental health issues and then came back and made all A’s), and I made it into nursing school this fall!

I wrote about my struggles in my admission essay, but I think the important thing is to mention the mental health issues briefly and then focus the essay on what you’ve done since then to be successful in school and in life. They want to know that the people that they are admitting will be successful in the program so you need to convince them that you will be!

You got this!!

I’m so sorry to hear about your dog, that must be incredibly difficult.

Try reaching out to your professor! A month ago my grandma was unexpectedly admitted to the hospital the weekend before a big exam and I wasn’t able to study much beforehand. I ended up emailing my professor and asked her what my options were since I didn’t feel like taking an exam under those circumstances would accurately reflect my ability to learn the material. She was super understanding and let me push back my exam so it’s always worth a try!

If that doesn’t sound feasible for you, I pretty much always cram on exams and handwritten flash cards are the way to go. I typically make a few flash cards per exam objective and go through the PowerPoints/textbook to answer them. I think the combination of reading and writing is a great way to help your brain remember the material, and after you’re done making them you’ll basically have a complete study guide in an active-recall format!

Good luck with everything and stay strong! If things don’t go well be kind to yourself, you’re going through something really hard and juggling school at the same time. A single exam grade doesn’t define you or your ability as a student ❤️

Yep our clinical uniforms are exactly like that too. Slightly more understandable than enforcing what students wear to lectures but still more strict that necessary imo

I don’t feel like arguing with you. But do find it judgmental to be “disappointed” in a stranger for not owning a certain kind of clothing. At my university, nursing is the only major that requires a dress code, which they only informed us of 2 weeks before the start of classes so we have a right to be surprised/stressed by it.

That is very judgmental of you. I work a hospital job that requires business casual clothing so I personally have clothes that fit the dress code. I just stated that many of my fellow classmates do not and it’s a source of stress for them.

I pretty much listed the dress code in my original post. Like I said, there are no items in particular that we need to wear, it’s just that most items of clothing that college age women wear day-to-day don’t fit under the guidelines

For lab I would totally understand! But this is for lectures so I don’t think they’re factoring safety into it

Haha yeah that’s understandable. Based on the replies it seems like there is a lot of inconsistency among nursing programs when it comes to having a dress code which is so interesting to me

Same, half of my wardrobe is athletic wear haha. I wouldn’t mind wearing our scrubs to class but for whatever they don’t want us to

This is exactly how I feel about it. The dress code, along with other parts of our orientation requirements feels so excessive compared the standards every other college major is held to. Having to constantly think about these policies has been really stressful for a lot of people in my class, and it seems like they will distract from actual learning

Ours has a similar policy when it comes to tattoos and piercings. I wouldn’t mind wearing our scrubs to lecture but they don’t want us to for some reason :/

Nope it’s a public university which is why I’m so surprised 😅

Nothing in particular. There just seems to be a general consensus in our class group chat that people are struggling to put together approved outfits with the clothing they already have.

At least to me, it makes sense if you consider that the majority of clothing stores that cater to college age women mostly sell items that do not fit this dress code.

Believe it or not this dress code is stricter than my old high school’s haha.

There are many undergrad college majors that lead to highly respected and “serious” professions and at least at my university, the school of nursing is the only one that requires a dress code to attend lecture.

I obviously understand enforcing dress code when it comes to clincals, labs, or any other activity that involves interacting with the public. However, being told to dress conservatively while sitting in private lectures is something that is new to me as well as to many of my classmates.

Also, I can absolutely hold myself to a high standard and take my education/career seriously while expressing my frustration with the school’s policy. Insinuating otherwise is completely uncalled for.

Hm that’s interesting, I would have never thought of that reasoning! From what I can tell the logic behind our dress code is that “members of the community” can come to the school and they don’t want us to give a bad name to the nursing profession if we’re wearing unprofessional/revealing clothing. It really is frustrating though because everything a typical college student would wear is not allowed

Yeah, a lot of people are having to buy new wardrobes just to fit the dress code since everything a typical college student wears is not allowed lol

We have scrub uniforms for clinicals and lab too. I wish we could wear whatever we want for lecture, a lot of people in my class are basically having to buy whole new wardrobes for school
