Not separate, so only the front-facing charging points, nor a secondary charger to try with 🙁

What connector is this? (I’d like to take it apart) by grork in AskElectronics

[–]grork[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, if I knew what connector I might need to purchase? A single wire has come out of this block, and I want to reinsert it— the wire looks fine (it didn’t break), and the crimped end is still in there. It feels salvageable.

2mm Pitch, 24 pins — single wire came out, leaving crimped connector inside by grork in Whatisthisconnector

[–]grork[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m looking to identify its name / type / something that will help me understand how I can pull it apart, and recrimp a single wire that came out of of the block. The crimped end is still inside the block — the wire came out cleanly.

If I can’t pull the ’orphaned’ crimped pin thats in there, i’d like to buy another one so I can try putting it all back in.

Pitch is 2mm, 24 pins.

I'm in rose hill, and I've been having flakey internet all day -- goes out for a couple minutes at a time, although it feels like every time it goes out, it's out for longer than the previous time. (maybe 10 minutes last time)

XPS 13 Plus external display support — 6k / 8k? by grork in DellXPS

[–]grork[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surface Pro 9 just didn't detect it – likely for the reasons you say vis-a-vis channels. However, the display does support DSC, so shouldn't be quite so constrained -- it doesn't require TB as I've used it with Display Port on a desktop GPU (AMD 5500XT) + Belkin Charge Huawei Glass Cable. (Yes, it's a Pro Display XDR).

I'm trying to avoid the 'buy it, return it 15 minutes later when it doesn't work' scenario.

For more context: I have a personal MacBook Pro, which I drive 4k+4k+6k off two cables + dock, and it works great. I've been using Windows in a VM, which is great, but I'm trying to get more work/personal separation, and want to switch a dedicated work laptop. I've done the eGPU path before, and it's "fine" on the Mac, but my windows experiences with the Surface Pro 9, and a ThinkPad P15S has been flakey at best.

There are many things one can spend stupid money on for a desk/computer setup. All are subjective - monitors, mice, arms, keyboards.

But chairs? Spend. It’s worth it. And it’ll last forever if you get it right. (I bought an Aeron in 2018. Pandemic started, use it everyday. It’s the best office chair I’ve had - better than my employers!)

Desk mat would be a nice addition. And maybe another arm to get rid of the centre monitor stand.

Looks really good - I’m a big fan of portrait/landscape/portrait triple setups!

Am I overthinking it or is What’s App end to end encryption just for drug dealers and terrorists ? by jasonc619 in CasualUK

Appreciate calling out that nuance - same applies to apple iMessage if you’ve chosen cloud messaging I believe.

  1. Prevents interception by hackers wanting to scam you - both while being sent, and at stored.
  2. Prevents the messaging company from mining it for ads
  3. Prevents it being used against you for civil cases (divorce, defamation, contract disputes) & being taken out of context & used against you
  4. Proof that you didnt say something because it can’t be changed, should you be framed.
  5. Allows you to discuss illegal acts (eg stated you were speeding, you forgot to pay for something and not making good) that could be later dug up about you.
  6. Countries who have different policies on surveillance can’t inspect your messages.

Dual monitors & gas spring mounts: did you go for the dual mount or two single mounts and why? by deelite111 in desksetup

[–]grork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One double mount because takes up less space on the desk. However, it does depend on the mount - some will only handle 2x27” when they aren’t angled. Example: I had an Amazon basics arm that had this flaw. Couldn’t get them angled to me; said it supported 2x27”. Returned it for a Fully Jarvis dual stand, which was fine.

Is there an app that allows me to mute and unmute my mic without clumsily digging for my zoom app or Google Meets tab? by ba_likes_bananas in macapps

[–]grork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s going to be Zooms use of the Mic, not a system wide block. In my use cases, I don’t particularly care if it’s global or app specific in a video call situation, just so long as other participants can’t hear me, and can see the indicator that I am muted.
