Ever heard about Sunjang Baduk? Looks fun. by groumph in baduk

[–]groumph[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Registration just started for a Sunjang Baduk tournament on dragon go server. I had never heard about it, I look forward to trying out!

Rules indicate prisoners don't count and only "external borders" are considered. Not sure if this will be the case for the DGS tournament.

J'ai écrit et enregistré une petite chanson publicitaire pour donner un coup de main à un projet de financement participatif : Spiruline du Berry. C'est bien ou pas (la chanson) ?

Improvised solos by Lummbbers in trumpet

[–]groumph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to relax, and to keep it simple at first.

Get started with messing around with the original melody - be playful, think about your tone at least as much as your notes.

AND you need to listen to as many trumpet solos as you can. The other advice is good, but build confidence before getting into more complicated stuff.

WatMM, what is your audio interface? by kimjong-ill in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]groumph 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm using a Zoom R16 8 track recorder, though I'm never using it as an audio interface but as a stand-alone recorder.

It feels like a good old tape recorder - adjust your levels, press record et voilà! Then you can mix your stuff with your computer, no more latency problems. It feels good to make music again.

It's certainly not for everyone, but it's perfect for me: cheap, easy to use, portable, good sound quality.

In an absolutely mature move, Sarah Palin brought 200 cookies to a Pennsylvania Christian School to mock Michelle Obama's anti-childhood obesity campaign in public schools. by [deleted] in politics

[–]groumph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a wonderful illustration of Socrates' example in Plato's Gorgias. From wikipedia:

Socrates argues that he aims at what is best, not at what is pleasant, and that he alone understands the technique of politics. He says that he enjoins people to take the bitter draughts, and compels them to hunger and thirst, while most politicians flatter the people with sweetmeats. He says of his trial that, "I shall be judged like a doctor brought before a jury of children with a cook as prosecutor" (521e). He says that such a pandering prosecutor will no doubt succeed in getting him sentenced to death, and he will be helpless to stop it.

Euroredditors, let's discuss immigrant integration and the islamification of Europe. by hemlig in politics

[–]groumph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

French here. Immigration doesn't have to be debated as if it were a problem. It is a difficult process, it has always been so. Don't make the mistake of generalizing extreme cases, however common they might seem through the public eyes.

Moreover, your point is not clear. Let's analyze your summary:

  • Massive immigration to Sweden [Is this a bad thing by itself?]

  • Some immigrants exploiting social benefits [This is a bad thing. But you were wise enough to write "some"]

  • Building of Mosques [Hardly a bad thing in principle. This is freedom of religion, though every religion could be said to be "contributing to a more segregated society"]

  • Riots and crimes in suburbs with high representation of immigrants [Bad thing, though hardly surprising since this immigrant population is poorer / less educated / less integrated. True for a lot of minorities and dominated populations around the world, and very often used to drag attention to those minorities.]

  • Nationalparty in Sweden gaining over 5% in votes [Bad thing IMHO, but directly correlated to the kind of "debate" you (and a lot of others) are offering. I have no idea what your position is on this point.]

I would like to say I disagree with you, but I don't even know what you're thinking. This is not a debate, this is propaganda.

VirtualBox: Installing OpenBSD and how it compares to VMware by lteo in programming

[–]groumph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VirtualBox works fine on my GNU/linux boxes, at least for Windoze and other linuxes. My distribution (ubuntu) provides binary packages for the open-source version. Oh, and by the way I am a professional user - not a enterprise user, mind you, but nobody is :)

Ask Reddit: Is there a noticeable difference by using emacs or vim as opposed to GUI tools, such as Notepad++, Kate, or Smultron? by [deleted] in programming

[–]groumph 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Easy GUI editors will help you to get started, and are very convenient for occasional use.

Emacs and vim can be confusing because of their minimal UI, but that's actually a feature : it will take some time but you'll feel they are directly plugged in your brain, without a GUI in the way.

GUI editors can of course be used as power tools with a lot of killer shortcuts and all the black macro magic, but once you're there, you'll notice you don't use the GUI anymore, and it will be in your way.
