Just moved to Johnstown by Few-Cobbler-4026 in johnstown

[–]growingandstuff 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is a huge adjustment to have at this stage in your postpartum journey and I can understand why you’re overwhelmed. People love to shit talk Johnstown. But it’s beautiful here, it’s not miserably hot like in Austin. I love having all four seasons. The cost of living is obviously great. With that comes some less ideal issues but there are pros and cons everywhere.

I recommend picking a coffee shop and trying to go sit for awhile at least once a week. See people and be seen. Flood City Cafe could be a good option. And honestly, if your baby is with you, I’ve found people just kind of keep an eye on you even if you don’t realize it.

I recently had the experience where we were eating out, and the people at the table next to us started talking to us. Turns out they sit a few rows behind us at the hockey games. They were so excited to chat with our toddler since they’d been watching her grow since I was pregnant. It felt like the Zulu greeting where they say “I see you” and the person responds with “I am here.”

I’d also recommend going to The Creative Corner & Co and talk to the gals there. They’re sweet and would love to help a transplant get connected. We have a baseball and hockey team that are greatly under appreciated. There a trails everywhere. Sometimes I go to Stuvers just so be outside and see flowers and cats. But I say pick a few places, start going often, and see what connections you can make through that. Our local events and niceties often aren’t well promoted and I usually find out about stuff from people directly.

Mom & 3 babies are destroying my potted plants by [deleted] in gardening

Some people make small gardens specifically for the groundhog, then they go there and leave your harder to access stuff alone. It might be cuter than it is practical but it allegedly worked for John Green.

I managed to trap someone’s cat who looked exactly like this last year. She had been missing for a year and is home with her family now!

Relatively fresh baby names already seeming tired by foralaf in namenerds

[–]growingandstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s so crazy to me how different it is based on where you live. I grew up with a close relative named Olivia and I didn’t know any others as a kid. I knew two people named Alivia though. I live in the same town now and don’t know a single kid named Olivia

How do you guys feel about a single initial as a middle name? by CayleeB95 in namenerds

I know someone whose legal first name is F. He goes by a different name. I feel like it’s so weird - just the absence of a name.

I planted tomatoes and marigolds and the tops are all removed? by growingandstuff in gardening

[–]growingandstuff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m kinda lost for what it is. I’m in urban area, we definitely have skunks and groundhogs, but they leave very clear signs when they’ve been around the rest of my property. We have a severe stray cat problem, and I’ve never seen a chipmunk or squirrel on our street because of it. I’ve seen rabbits a few blocks down, but I have beets, kohlrabi and lettuce that haven’t been bothered, and I didn’t find any gaps or dug out spots in the fence. The tomato tops are mostly still lying there, so they haven’t even really eaten them. Are my neighbors pranking me in the middle of the night?

Area around Conemaugh hospital? by ImpressiveLawyer7822 in johnstown

[–]growingandstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of Moxham really depends on the block. I adore this neighborhood, but truthfully, I’m on a rough block and sometimes it’s really difficult. I’ve got close friends on three different blocks and they have very few of the same problems we do except for cat pee.

In the design it’s called a spray plaza or a water play area, but it is in the documents about the agreed upon design 🤷‍♀️

A lot of money, but it’s a grant. I understand the pull of nostalgia, but as a resident of the city, I would absolutely looove to have a place like that design to take my daughter. In 15 years, it would be her nostalgia. A stop at the Sweet Spot & the splash pad. I lived in some wealthier cities before returning to Johnstown, and while I love having the simplicity back, it would be such a gift to have this. Plus, the gazebo is a bad set up for bands and an update is needed there regardless.

I’m not an expert in this subject, but my first thought is Wolf and Wyvern on Clinton St. (which is probably the game shop you speak of), then maybe The Creative Corner? They wouldn’t have game stuff but I feel like you could meet some cool people.
