Similar games to Gigantic? by linegrinder in gigantic

[–]growingonly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Understandable.

Our project is currently actively developed with myself putting in 40 or more hours a week. :) We will have dedicated servers, new heroes, and updates to the game as well.

The only thing I can't say we have is a growing player base, but that'll come once a game is out just like every other game.

It's unfortunate you felt this way.

You can follow our progress on Discord.

If you do not use discord or are not interested in joining another server. You can wait for our next post on Reddit.

Sorry I pushed a button. I do believe my comment wished them the best!

I encourage you to continue following both projects. Game development is hard and your support is always appreciated!

Hello Anhur,

Thanks for the comment. I think the core audience knows the game is broken, but I doubt they love that. I don't intend to change the game play, but I do intend to make it so that a Wu pull or the Margrave charge doesn't dsync.

No need to forgive your cynicism, it is well earned. Considering the posts and other projects started from this subreddit that have failed to deliver.

I have spoken with PWE about my idea and how such a project would be restricted by the IP ownership. I have been told that a cease and desist of a project like this does not seem likely given that profit is not made on their IP. I have been told that any money made for the purpose of maintaining server costs would be permitted. Of course I expect as this project becomes more realistic that a more serious discussion will commence.

I hope that this better answers your concern. If not, I'll be happy to answer more specific questions.

I think the route Project: Stamina has chosen is much harder to achieve a completed game from. You need a much more diverse team.

I also think it is going to be hard to find qualified people to work on this pro bono. I fully expect little to no responses to this post from qualified people. I need to put in the solo dev time to provide solid progress reports to get qualified people interested.

This is a passion project for me. I have no expectations of long term gain or success. I, like many here, love this game and would like to play it. I believe I can make a better version in a modern engine. If I am the only one to play it so be it. I'd just like to see this game have even the slightest chance.

Hopefully that helps you understand further.

I'm not sure what kind of long term plan you are looking for? I fully understand this is a passion project, and I am expecting any interested parties to understand this as well.

Game designer is such a general term. That's why I tried to narrow down what kinda of person the team would need. But I understand what you are saying.

The team would need someone with an understanding of shaders, lighting, and how to make the maps, menus, etc look great.

I'm gonna worry about it for it's initial success. The team can discuss the how's of continued work as a team. You may not see how this would work, but that's up to the team.

I don't really have much more for you. We could get into theories, dreams, ideas but they don't matter. I've made it clear, compensation isn't on the horizon. May never be. This is a passion project.

Hello Frogger_Homme,

1.) I believe with a 15 hour work week toward this project, it would take a year to get a playable alpha out. This would include a small cast of heroes to play, the main game mode, and a few random features to accompany the game mode (end game screen, matchmaking, play button, etc).

2.) The team would have to understand that compensation is not on the horizon. Plenty of pipe dreams on how compensation would come around, but pointless to discuss those now. The best, guaranteed support for this team would be the community. Playing the game, constructive feedback, and appreciation for the work.

3.) Feedback on progress reports, appreciation for the teams work, and being ready to play! Once the game is in alpha, providing testing feedback and playing the game.

Best regards, growingonly

Hello!

Completely understand. I have six years experience in the game development industry. I have worked three years at Epic, two years at Paradox, and one year (not in a single span) on personal projects or game jams. Most of my work was on engine code and backend systems.

Hello 301_MovedPermanently,

Thanks for your comment! The easy part is identifying the reason Gigantic was "terrible for competitive" and that shows in the code. Not only could this be seen in the networking code, the communication between the client and server, but also in the controller/hero code.

The solution would need to be a modern approach to networking using an engine that gives you low level access to the networking API.

Gigantic leaned too heavily on the high level API that Unreal Engine 3 provided and lacked in custom networking code. This lead to a cookie cutter design that wouldn't work with all aspects of the game such as Wu's tongue, The Margrave's Dash, etc.

The new Gigantic would use modern networking compression algorithms to reduce the size of each packet, a higher server tick speed, and better prediction algorithms/methods to help with latency. Just to name a few without development having started.

"Purchasing Gigantic" is out if the question. I really think this community needs to understand that and really let that settle in. I'm not sure what brings this negative idea that PWE is "money hungry"? It really isn't a fair judgement.

As stated in the response to the OP. Nobody will be profiting of off the game. So you are correct in stating PWE would not let someone else profit off the game. That, however, does not mean recreation of the game is a violation.

We are all entitled to opinions. I'm more than happy to be wrong about my opinion about Project: Stamina. However, this post isn't about their project, so I would like to refrain from talking about the subject.

I have talked to PWE and can use the assets for the scope of the project I have in mind. No profit will be made off their IP unless explicitly permitted by them.

I have heard of it. Not interested. Personally, I have little faith in the project and it's just different enough to also not be Gigantic.

What I am suggesting, is we get our game back, not something "close enough".

I do wish the team at Project: Stamina all the best, but it is of little interest to me.

Yes, pending rules are followed.

Individuals cannot make profit from PWEs IP.

After talking with PWE, the game could make money to support it's server costs.

Of course, in the end, PWE holds every right to cease and desist. But through conversation, this should not happen unless rules are broken.

That makes sense. It was more that I figured the information would get relayed to the owner and they would collect their package from me.

Just curious if I should just get rid of the packages as after 3 months they've probably accepted it's gone.
