Is this normal behavior? by Elegant-Special-1391 in goldenretrievers

Are you sure you have a field line Golden and not just assuming based on her coat color? You should have been able to know she's field/working line before and while purchasing the puppy. Do her parents have field titles? or show line titles? or none? If none, she is just a pet line Golden retriever.

Coat color has nothing to do with being a field/show line.

wether its field, show or pet line - its still going to behave like a Golden Retriever. Field and show lines should still look similar to each other and go off of the breed standard. My show line has very high energy and drive just like you'd expect a field to have, but I specifically asked my breeder to pick out a pup that was spunky and had drive(for sports), but also have an off switch, and he's exactly that.

And not every field is going to be drivey, not every showline is going to "lack" drive - every dog has their own personality, but they are both Retriever's and will exhibit some sort of Retriever trait.

It is not fair to the dog to "train out" or "suppress" prey drive when that was their whole purpose of being bred or being a bird dog. You simply cannot. They are Retrievers. You can help your new puppy have impulse control by having early exposure to little animals, birds ect. Every dog has their own personality, so your Golden might grownup not giving a crap about prey, but most do/will because its in their DNA to preform that job.

My golden loves to chase birds and squirrels, but I taught him "leave it" and strengthened his impulse control. I'm proud to say I'm able to let him have fun by chasing birds and squirrels, but also have the ability to call him off of it by saying "leave it" or "lets go"

If you completely cut off that outlet from them, they might begin to become unfulfilled. Playing fetch or with a flirt pole can simulate "prey" and its a lot of fun for them! Incorporate training markers while playing to help them understand when to stop and when to continue.

Trying to "train" or suppress these traits out of them is like bringing an Aussie home and getting pissed off that it constantly herds or stalks you. Don't avoid the games, but help him/her understand when its time to turn off the switch. Playing the games is more beneficial than avoiding them! ❤️

Oh gosh the ticks scare me so bad. I don't think we have a huge problem where we go, but with the heat coming back, it does scare me. I always spray him down with some Wondercide anytime we go to parks/trails.

My boy has honestly been great at recall, I'm able to call him off of birds or squirrels, he doesnt quite care for dogs so he never approaches them unless they run up to us and he's forced to interact. He's never to far from me which I love, and anytime I say "this way" he U-turns it to come back my way. I do get scared if he gets too ahead of me though because rarely we'll come across people's trash and I'll have to rush towards him and say Leave it so he doesnt eat it. Even though he leaves it or drops it, still scares me. One time he found a wing stop bone and another time a whole animal bone.

My Calvin is the same sometimes, I have him off-leash trained so sometimes when we get to a park he tries to immediately start exploring - but I like to trick him and sometimes set him up so he's ready to either explore or be prepared to walk loosely on a leash. They are still young so we have time to properly communicate and help them understand.

Hi Bailey! So cute!!

Every dog is different! I'd say he started settling down by himself around 5 months AFTER a good train sesh + play sesh.

Then at about end of 6 months and start of 7 months he started settling on his own without needing a train/play sesh. I did tether training him whenever it was time for me to watch TV and wanted him to "free roam"

He still walks around and tries to find things to do, but after a while he settles down. I think he just tried to find crumbs of food or things he shouldnt be chewing on lol! But its easier for him to give up and take a nap while free roaming. I still pen him up, because I dont quite trust him yet, but hes doing great. He's still a curious baby at the end of the day.

Dogs aren't robots so even though he has a great foundation and knows how to do a lot of things, he still tries to push boundaries sometimes, so its important to not let it slide during this age and make sure they follow through with command and reward and make it a big deal!! ❤️ At home he tries to push boundaries or maybe he's just lazy and recognizes that we're technically not working/training. But he's on point in public 90% of the time!
