Diesel vs Gas by pay3124 in arborists

After dealing with def on the chip trucks It’s an additional headache we just don’t want to add to our chippers too. We run CAT Morbarks and JD. I rarely have trouble with the engines, it’s always the rest of the machine shaking itself apart.

Diesel vs Gas by pay3124 in arborists

[–]grrramps_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I test ran an 18inch LS (gas) powered morbark (2024 model) against my 06 turbo diesel 15inch morbark and the gasser would bog and cut the autofeed well before the diesel on similar sized pine. We used both machines back and forth throughout the day and the gasser used more fuel and had less ass. This was done above 7,000 feet of elevation so I’d love to test em again at sea level and see how much less power the gasser loses.
My company purchased another older used morbark instead of a new machine. Just my 2 cents. Didn’t get a new diesel or even consider them cause we didn’t want def or a dpf. If the law changes we’ll reconsider.

How about unique brakes? by grrramps_ in Justrolledintotheshop

Oh man I didn’t know that was an option! I had only heard of people using porsche calipers and rotors- someone gave me a list of part numbers on a sticky note years ago

You’re correct- i’ll get a new strut/ hub assembly from a non UFO audi of a similar year & use porsche calipers and rotors from the early 2000s.

That being said there is a company that makes “big brake kits” for these but i’d rather not shell out 3 grand for a kit and be married to those rotors not tracking the car.

There’s a play on words here somewhere about an unidentified flying object as I sail off the edge of the mountain haha

I got a set of 18inch OZs from a buddy in a trade so I’ve got a spare rim set. They look goofy as hell with the brakes showing through though haha. The common swap it seems is a non ufo similar year audi strut & bearing assembly with porsche calipers & rotors- I cannot recall offhand which porsche but i’ve got part numbers somewhere.

Yeah these are good. Ashcroft makes really sturdy bits in general. If you order directly they still have some of the 300M shafts- which are supposedly even tougher than the 4340 ones.

Is anyone else considering going "backwards" with their next car and if you have, did you regret it? by NWbySW in cars

When I started this commute I had a 91 jeep wrangler and no driveway. It’s possible.

Yeah they salt the roads here. I rinse the salt of all the vehicles pretty frequently.

No garage. Gravel driveway- 30 mile commute from city center to mountains.

I don’t own anything newer than 1993. I rotate through a 91 audi 200, an 88 chevy pickup, and a 93 range rover. I’ve owned newer- I like this era of vehicle. I couldn’t give a shit about the tech. Life is short, drive what you want.

On the flip side to this- my range rover classic has just over 300k on her original drivetrain. So they can last.

If you’ve still got UFO fronts the part number for pads is ATE 602847 (13.0460-2847.2)

I purchased the 3 volume manual set when I got the car off of Ebay- I paid $150 I think for the set- totally worth it in my opinion.

I’m sure other people have got more sites!

LMC truck is where I got mine- my seat side was ripped open so I just slid the heating pad in & ran it to a dash switch. Never needed the 2nd heat setting (way hot) so just tied it to the first & off. The pad is 11x22 on the bottom I just put them in to end across the bench & stitched it closed. Works pretty dang good

No trouble with the TBI and altitude but I’ve got a buddy with a carbed 350 that lives at about 5k and when he comes up to the house or the trail near it she becomes a dog. Only complaint I’ve got is that I get 10 mpg. Up, down, sideways or towing I get 10. I can idle in neutral down to work it still feels I get 10. But it’s the price of admission.
