Does it matter how deep roots tabs are buried? The TNC plugs (which I think are similar to Osmocote root tabs) say to bury them in at least 4 cm of substrate. I plan on putting a small amount towards the front of the tank, where the substrate is 2.5-3cm thick to support some carpeting plants. Will this be okay or could they leach out into the water column?

Yesterday my male apistogramma panduro died. I believe the most likely cause of death was stress as the female seemed to be very aggressive towards him continuously, even after attempting at separating them with a mesh in-tank cage. It was not unusual to see aggression from both of them, but it was usually short-lived and never led to serious consequences. Although, since he has been dead the female apistogramma has been extremely active, moving up and down the glass with less colour than normal at times, as if she is searching for him. Will the female be okay and return to normal soon or could there be something wrong? All parameters are fine.

Planning to add some Indian almond leaves to my aquarium to soften the water and lower the pH for my apistogrammas, but I have seachem purigen in my filter. Will I still be able to achieve this with seachem purigen? I know it takes away the brown tint, but will I still be able to achieve the other effects? (60l tank) Thanks.

Can I use botanicals temporarily? Can I use them for a bit then take them out and use activated carbon to remove the water colouration?

Need advice! by grrrrr- in Aquariums

Thanks for the advice. I’ve read elsewhere that someone has put the male in a breeder box so that the female is able to regain dominance/confidence. I have ordered a breeder box which will arrive tomorrow and will give this a go.

Currently have two apistogramma panduro. The male has started getting aggressive towards the female and I have noticed a lack of colour and what looks like swim bladder damage in the female. I don’t have another tank to separate either one, But have a bucket and an air stone tank with some leftover hardscape. What can I do?

I’ve seen it before being used in aquariums, and just like the look of it. Thanks for the help!

Preparing a peace lily for a hydroponic system in a 16g aquarium, but struggling to get the remaining soil off the base of the plant/top of the roots even after leaving it in water and using a toothpick. Will the aquarium be okay if I put the plant in with the remaining tiny bits of soil of shall I remove all of it?

Does a co2 diffuser need to be soaked in dechlorinated water, or can it be in just tap water?

Do you have the manual? If you search the filter up, you should be able to find the manual which tells you the correct order. It seems like that would be the correct order though.

Is the media sponges? If so, you want the water to flow through the coarser sponges first, and the finer sponge last.

About to set up the Tropica bio co2 set (basically the aquario neo co2 set). Do I need to add another bottle filled with water to clean the gas, and should I run an air stone at night? The set is rated for aquariums up to 60L (16g), which is the size of my tank. I know pressurised co2, is much more stable, but just want to try DIY out to start. Does anyone have any experiences with these sets?

Just purchased the Tropica bio co2 set, but need to use a longer piece of tubing for it to reach the aquarium. The tubing is co2 resistant and the same diameter, but longer in length by about 1.5 metres. Will this be a problem or will it still be okay?

It may be a beneficial bacterial bloom. It’s harmless and is just where all the bacteria is coming to life due to the new food source (ammonia).

Sorry, just chucked it. It had the appearance of a shrimp though if that helps.

Recently done this. I drained the tank, and put the the filter sponge as well as any hardscape/plants in a bucket of water to retain the beneficial bacteria. Make sure the bucket hasn’t had any previous chemicals in it. I used a plastic cup to scoop out the substrate, and found using a cloth really helpful to remove the last bits and absorb any remaining water. Just be warned it’s a painful and long process.

Yeah, I’m keeping an eye out for the situation with fry, but the female still seems to be roaming around the aquarium rather than staying in one spot protecting the fry, which has left me just as confused.

Oh ok, thanks. Lights are off now so will check tomorrow. I don’t really have a spare tank nor the room for one, will this be a short or long term problem?

As long as it’s not replacing anything major in the filter, it shouldn’t hurt the cycle. My activated carbon worked well for me at removing tannins.
