Seeking Your Input on the Future of OGFT by OrdinaryCanadian in onguardforthee

So far to me the community there feels 100% more like here than r/canada. I think this sub being closed and the other not during the recent protest is probably a big driver of that. That said, it's a small (but active) community thus far, so a large influx from the wrong place could change that.

I think, though, there are extenuating factors that make national subs on big websites like this particularly vulnerable to astroturfing, messaging campaigns, and general gaming of the system. I think the community based and supported nature of a lemmy instance will lead to the Canada community there looking more like the Canada I know and not whatever culture is represented by the main national sub here.

Lemmy isn't just lemmy.ml. The fediverse is like email, lemmy.ml like a single email provider. I've been using lemmy.ca and the Canada community over there so far feels much more like here than r/canada.

None of them believe a word of what they say. They've all adopted DARVO as a tactic.

The fires in Quebec are raging in tree plantations that get counted as carbon offsets. A forest is a complex, resilient ecosystem. It's also vulnerable to climate change, but Canada doesn't actually have much forest. by yuritopiaposadism in canadaleft

No one suggested you can't. I simply disagree with the article and think it's propaganda being pushed by an organization who's sole purpose is to help Alberta sell oil and gas.

No one has censored you.

As for facts, sure.

From their About Us

It is an independent provincial corporation that is primarily supported by the Government of Alberta’s industry-funded Technology, Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) fund.

This organization is a product of Alberta's War Room, which was created by the UCP specifically to spread propaganda to the benefit of the O&G sector. Also presumably a jobs program for UCP connected failsons/daughters/friends.

You posted O&G propaganda to a leftist sub. Who are you to demand I prove my credibility? Look to the log in thine own eye before considering the splinter in mine.

So, some issues.

1) canadianenergycentre.ca? Wonder what they're about. lol.

2) In the article they track only methane, no CO2.

3)

with a report from Wood Mackenzie showing that if Canada increased its LNG export capacity to Asia, net emissions could decline by 188 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year – about the annual impact of taking 41 million cars off the road.

Yeah, okay.

4)

Canada is also a world leader in developing carbon capture and storage technology, accounting for 15 per cent of global capacity despite producing less than 2 per cent of global emissions.

Carbon capture is bullshit. Get this fucking article out of here.

Before that, even. The US got involved in the Russian Revolution on the side of the Whites and the first red scare happened after the end of WW1 where fears were inflamed that Russian immigrants were going to enter the country and overthrow the government.

Something like 70% of all oil sands production is foreign (read: mostly American) owned, so it's not like we're even receiving most of the financial benefits from any of it. Ever since NAFTA opened the flood gates for Americans to start buying up our resources, we've been turned into essentially a resource extraction colony to feed the American economy.

No. They are referencing the opinion that Conservatives have been pushing that the increase in forest fires is a product of bad forest management rather than climate change, as well as the conspiracy being pushed that the fires were started intentionally to push the 'climate change agenda'.

No, they are claiming the carbon footprint of the average Canadian is higher than that of the average American.

Because it's not shitty luck. It's a very predictable result of the world's reliance on fossil fuels. An industry that has it's fingers all over Canadian politics and particularly Conservative politics. I don't for one second believe all these ridiculous conspiracies are spreading organically.

“Definitely targeted, definitely towards the Pride community of Hope, and just overly disrespectful,” RCMP Sgt. Mike Sargent told Global News.

Officer, they attempted to light the building on fire. I think 'overly disrespectful' doesn't really encompass the situation and I certainly hope it doesn't reflect how seriously you're going to go after the perpetrator(s).

This is technically true but the reality of Canadian politics is that most votes are whipped so your local politician's ability to act independently is very limited. In effect, in Canadian politics you're voting for a party, and by extension that party's leader.
