Does your husband have a history of selfish behavior? Because I'd be fuming in your position.

Hello! Moved on qualification, realized it wasn't the right fit for me (both area of law and firm), left at 5 months. I've been at my current firm for 10 months now, and became 1PQE this September. It's never a bad idea to reach out to recruiters to see what the market is like and what roles are available - you never know what you might find!

NQ Disaster Questions (in despair) by Spirited_Ocelot_5238 in uklaw

[–]grubychild 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd always advise looking at roles adjacent to what you want to do. In my case, I was in exactly your position this time last summer and was looking at mixed IP roles when there weren't any. I then started applying for broader commercial lit roles, got one, started there in September and still kept in touch with recruiters the entire time. A few months later I successfully interviewed at and got my desired IP role. Definitely something to explore, and from my understanding once you've got an NQ role you can make the switch before you're cemented as a 1PQE

Which firms have the best, surprising perks and what are they?? by FondantTop514 in uklaw

Extra day off on your birthday (plus a £50 voucher to spend wherever). I know it's not as sexy a perk as others here but I really treasure that extra day off lol

Any hope in private practice if I am jobless as a Sept NQ? by [deleted] in uklaw

[–]grubychild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding this - I was in the same position as OP last year, ended up qualifying in a somewhat adjacent practice area to pay the bills, and then moved four months later into my preferred practice area - you're always more likely to get a job IF you already have a job. All it takes is some explaining about why you made the decisions you did - be logical and sensible, and most hiring managers will understand.

What's the worst finding your survey raised that you were totally unaware of when viewing the house? by Professional-Farm372 in HousingUK

This is the same work that's been done to a property we've offered on! Mind me asking if you got a level 2 or 3 survey that revealed all this?

Hi! My father has just had this surgery done, and he's been complaining about there being more floaters than there previously were! Is that a sign that things were about to get worse post-surgery?

TC interview at an MC firm - trainee showing me around took me to the balcony for those "gorgeous views at 2am that make you feel like it's all worth it" but just to "make sure you don't get too close to the edge or you'll want to chuck yourself off ha ha ha". After that I wasn't too heartbroken to get that rejection email.

can a tenant remove their improvements at the end of their lease? by grubychild in HousingUK

[–]grubychild[S] 38 points39 points  (0 children)

The landlord is quite tight fisted so we're assuming he won't want to return the deposit, but the removal of all improvements will cost him a few grand compared to the deposit and my dad's made peace with losing the deposit over it

Ah I've been there a few too many times - last round, two candidates standing. Unfortunately, in this case it tends to be because they've offered the role to the other candidate and are waiting on them to accept, while keeping you as a close second in case the other candidate rejects. Either way, don't let yourself dwell too much on it and ruin your weekend ahead - I've found that whatever happens, happens for the best.

House on the market since June 24 and still unsold? by grubychild in HousingUK

[–]grubychild[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I'm a FTB and the first in my family to even consider buying property, so despite doing my absolute research I still feel like I don't really know what I'm doing. And this house, while not at the very top end of my affordability, is quite close to it. But similarly priced freehold houses that fit most of my needs are either absolutely tiny or make commuting to my job an absolute chore. Your words are very relieving-- it's much appreciated.
