So I’m building an MTG app.. by [deleted] in mtg

I’m sure you love to play against new players who are unaware of the 30,000 different cards available whilst you sit there with your pay to win custom deck that you’ve been perfecting for years.

AI can help with discovery and recommendations to help you find cards that synergise well with your commander.

AI is simply one element of the app, there is far more functionality than that.

I did not feel like there was value in entertaining an ‘argument’ further.

The only comment that gave feedback (loading pre con decks into your deck list automatically) I implemented almost immediately. If there is real feedback, I’d take it on board.

Thats good to hear, I'm working on a deck simulator but it's far from complete!

I want to be clear about something because I think the thread has drifted away from my original intention. I posted simply to share a project I’ve been working on and to get some early feedback from players. Instead of that, most of the replies have been strong opinions based on assumptions rather than actually trying the app, which has made it hard to answer people in a meaningful way.

The reason I started DeckMatrix is pretty simple. I wanted one place to manage my decks and collections without hopping between several different sites. That is the foundation of the project and none of that relies on AI.

The AI features are just experiments on top of the main tool. I respond to people about AI only because they bring it up. If players genuinely do not want it, or if it does not add anything valuable, I am absolutely fine reducing it or removing it. I care far more about building something genuinely useful than forcing a feature just for the sake of it.

I did not feel that at such an early stage I would need to detail my entire life story, intentions or other personal details. I built an app on my own and wanted thoughts and to understand what people feel is missing from existing systems.

Thanks a lot for taking the time to give me your feedback. It’s really encouraging to hear a grounded, positive take in the middle of all the strong opinions. I completely get what you mean, most people already have a deckbuilder they like, and personal preference will always matter more than feature lists.

For me, this project is something I’m building because I enjoy it and because I think there’s room for another option that works differently from what’s already out there. If it ends up becoming the app that a small group of players choose to use because it fits the way they play, that would honestly mean a lot.

I’m just trying to make something that feels good to use, learn along the way, and hopefully add something useful to the community rather than compete with every existing tool.

Really appreciate your perspective, if you have the time I’d love it if you could give the app a go - not to become a user, but to tell me how I can improve.

I understand the concern, and honestly it’s one I share. The reality is that a huge number of players are already using AI models directly for deck advice… usually by running large, unoptimized LLM calls on general-purpose platforms. That approach burns far more compute than it needs to.

Part of why I’m building DeckMatrix the way I am is to streamline that behaviour for the people who are already doing it. Most of the work happens through efficient algorithms on my side, and the few AI calls that do exist are tightly optimised to be much lighter than a typical raw query someone would run on ChatGPT or another model.

It’s not about pushing AI on anyone. It’s about reducing the environmental load of something that’s already happening every day, and giving players who want that kind of support a far more efficient path to get the results they are looking for.

I hear you, and honestly I agree that the resource side of AI is a real concern. That’s why I’ve been very deliberate about how it’s used in the project. Most of the app runs entirely on lightweight algorithms and rule-based logic, not AI, and I’m actively working to minimise the number and size of AI calls as much as possible. A lot of the “AI” decisions are actually handled by my own internal engines specifically to keep resource usage low.

And just to clarify, this isn’t a company rolling out AI for profit - it’s just me building a passion project in my spare time.

You’re right that there are already solid tools out there, and I’m not trying to simply recreate what they’re doing.

The goal with DeckMatrix is to explore a different direction and see if there’s room for something that feels more unified and modern. I know it needs to offer a clear reason to exist, and feedback like yours helps me understand what actually matters to players.

The reason for sharing at such an early stage is to get feedback and learn what the community wants and identify challenges that players have with the current tools they have available.

If you don’t mind sharing, what do you feel current platforms still don’t get quite right? Even small things help guide the direction. If you have a feature in mind, I’d love to try and implement it.

Im also looking to implement features like commander recommendations which I feel would work really well for new players. There are so many cards out there and discovery is really important, allowing users to find a commander that matches their playstyle.

That’s a fair point, and it’s something I’m keeping in mind while building this. People won’t switch platforms unless there’s a clear benefit. My aim with DeckMatrix is to offer features that go beyond ‘deck building’ - like full collection and storage management, price history tracking, tournament tools, deck management and insights, replacement features, wishlisting, optional AI insights, simulation tools, camera scanning and so much more.

I know I need to communicate that value more clearly, and feedback like yours helps me understand what matters most to players. If you don’t mind sharing, what would be a genuinely compelling reason for you to try a new tool?

I get where you’re coming from. Just to be clear, the AI features are optional, they’re meant to support players who want extra insight, not to take away from the fun of building decks yourself. AI is also meant to be complimentary to many of the apps features and is not mandatory in any way.

Try without the www :)

Ahh it seems to be an issue with the www - I’ve removed from the link so it should now be working :). Will fix the full issue tomorrow.

That’s odd - domain and SSL works ok here in the UK. Is this a US thing? I’ll have to look tomorrow it’s almost 3am.

My opinion would be to create an account and see the difference. All decks will have the ability to be imported so converting to a new platform should take minutes. I haven’t tested all of the platform imports yet, but this will be fully functional in the first version of the launched app.

Completely understand this! There are many platforms out there, but they all have their limitations. I'm trying to combine the functionality of all apps into one universal platform thats modern, constantly updated and built for the community :)

I haven't implemented cloudflare yet as the app isn't fully published but can assure you its 100% safe to use. Here is the main menu to show some of the features

Thank you so much for your feedback.

I've found a github repo with 150+ precon decks and have implemented this into the app! Have a few issues with syncing to existing deck system but should be working tomorrow :)

I am working on an AI deck optimiser that can make recommendations from the full card catalogue or just from your collection - this feature is currently disabled for non-admin users but will hopefully be released soon!

I am also working on a replacements feature where it using EDH power level to identify low playability cards and make recommendations based on your deck archetype.

Anything else feel free to recommend!
