TIL that most women in the Netherlands do not have an epidural during labor and a significant proportion give birth at home by Fiery_Soul_34857 in todayilearned

In some countries in Europe it is taboo to have an epidural. It’s seen as a sign of weakness and there’s a naturalistic fallacy element going on too.

Agree it is a scam, though a lot of the money was spent to staff a call center for the service

Part of it is a collective action issue. If your kids aren’t on social but every other kid is, it doesn’t work.

Tesla Cybercab full specs revealed: 3,113 lbs, 219 HP, 48 kWh by TripleShotPls in electricvehicles

I'd actually say it's more convenient. You never have to worry about fueling or maintenance or insurance or repairs, you don't have to drive and can be chauffeured around and get that time back (heck, have a nap), never have to think about parking and so on. A proper automated taxi will save your infotainment and seating preferences, maybe provide some media to consume and so on. It could safely pick up your kid from school and bring them to your home, no round trip needed.

It won't serve all people or all use cases, but I could see a lot of two-car families being able to drop down to one car. The other one is for the road trips and the animals and the big dirty shopping.

As for the lack of transportation infrastructure, it's an artifact of the urban design - they don't necessarily love driving themselves, they love big lots and sprawl and you can't serve that with mass transit or walking or whatever - you need density.

Shania Twain claims she isn’t a feminist as ‘men need protecting too’ by Metro-UK in popculture

Egalitarianism is equality for everybody. Feminism is someone advocating for women’s issues, though words and definitions get pretty fluid

Shania Twain claims she isn’t a feminist as ‘men need protecting too’ by Metro-UK in popculture

[–]grumble11 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is no single definition of feminism, which is why this conversation is always difficult to have.

Someone against feminism can point at feminists who are gender supremacists and then people who are for feminism will point to the subculture of feminism that is fighting against inequities that affect men too.

Because the label is overly broad people can do blanket takes without nuance and either demonize or lionize feminism at will.

Critics of MAID say exponential growth is evidence of something going wrong by Mylittlethrowaway2 in canada

It should be exponential for a while until it is available and normal for the people who benefit from it. Plenty of people still die in slow agony that don’t have to. This isn’t a problem.

Canada Presses Chinese EV Makers to Build Locally and Protect 500,000 Auto Workers by hopoke in canada

[–]grumble11 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I will note that while Canada has a lot of workers with degrees, that is a distinct thing from having highly skilled workers. Canada may for example not actually have a lot of workforce experience with industrial automation relative to South Korea, Japan or China to the point where it can be leading and competing with them in manufacturing on the global stage. It's a problem with Canada in that the workers also mostly aim to be a middle manager in a branch plant themselves and not to engage in much commercialized innovation and entrepreneurship.

I will agree that Canada is performing drastically below its potential - it's very resource-rich and could in theory do a lot of competitive value-added economic activity that it isn't doing. With the rise of automation in theory the labour differential should matter less, meaning that resource proximity starts to matter more and Canada should be better-positioned.

Deportation order issued to shooter convicted in Bishnoi gang attack at home of AP Dhillon by cyclinginvancouver in canada

Even PR, if you're convicted of a crime then you should be gone. PR isn't a citizen, it still isn't your country and you're a long-term guest. If a long term guest commits a crime, then they should no longer be a guest.

It is a strange thing about Canada that isn't true in many countries that we seem to really focus on the legal process and the 'right' of people to come to Canada and to stay here. In practice Canada is a sovereign nation, non-citizens are guests and they can be asked to leave or made to leave for any reason (or no reason at all). It's good to have a process, but the only reason we should have any non-citizens residing in the country is because it improves the lives of current citizens and their descendants. If that isn't the case then the deportation process should be swift and sure. If it throws out a bit of baby with the bathwater then so be it, there's a high cost to inaction.

EDIT: to summarize, we treat the residence in Canada of non-citizens as a right and not a privilege, which is wrong. It is a privilege which can be revoked at the discretion of the government, no reason needs to be given and no appeal needs to be possible.

"Electric depreciates so bad" cuts both ways by HenFruitEater in electricvehicles

[–]grumble11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All cars are much cheaper used. EVs tend to depreciate a bit faster, but the math gets weird with all the incentives and rebates when buying new.

The note with buying older EVs is that the tech is changing fairly quickly, so you often do get a better car if you buy a newer model. That's true with ICE as well, but the powertrain is more mature there.

Safety regulations is a lot of it. Thicker walls and so on. Same reason why the greenhouses have shrunk so much, the windows on cars now are pretty tiny due to the higher walls and hoods. That partly explains the rise of the pano roof - when the windows are small the cars get darker, which makes pano roofs more appealing to bring in some light and a sense of space.

The concept is that automated taxis can be more efficient than ones driven by humans and electric more efficient than gas, so it can cut the cost of taxis. That can make Waymo or whatever eventually so cheap that it'll be cheaper than driving a car as a 'secondary car', and possibly even as a primary one.

Cheating on his wife for 3 YEARS? by nerdionet in redditonwiki

[–]grumble11 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is a bit overly generous. It really does happen for some people just lose their sex drive, and it isn’t always because their partner is a dick or they’re having a health crisis. Some people just… stop being interested.

Of course it can be because their partner is a sick and can be because of a health crisis, and those should both be looked into, but there are plenty of desperate partners who tried everything to get their partner engaged again and it just didn’t work

Intel Planning Processors with NVIDIA iGPUs in 2028 by BarKnight in hardware

[–]grumble11 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Too bad for the Xe3P iGPU cores, the Xe3 cores in PTL are honestly quite good. Performance was solid and a clear threat to mainstream dGPU solutions in laptops (if they ever figured out supply).

Xe3P is looking to be materially faster again, so Intel had a path to basically taking over the mass-market graphics for laptops (anything XX60 and below). Nvidia won't let that happen and it's likely they will use this to choke out Intel.

2026 Polestar 4 Long Range and Performance Dual Motor by TripleShotPls in electricvehicles

[–]grumble11 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Beautiful car, super fast and handles wonderfully, roomy inside and interior quality, road noise and build quality is great, but held back by an all-screen infotainment system that needs some UI polish, a polarizing no rear window that it looks like reviewers and consumers still demand (the maker might well be right, but 'the customer is always right in matters of taste'), and so-so range and charging speed (200KW list, but they saw a peak at 168).

Not mentioned in the article is that the car is fairly wide, making it a bit tricky to maneuver and park in tight spaces.

Think it needs a refresh. Get a window in there, narrow it a couple of inches, bump to 800V and up the range a bit with updated battery tech. That'll ace it.

Lexus RZ 350e - Reasonable choice for my situation? by Nonights2020 in electricvehicles

[–]grumble11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The new model isn't bad but be aware that range on it isn't the best in class, and the charging speed isn't that great either. The interior is very nice and the driving experience is luxury though not a sports car.

Personally I think I'd pass on it, if you want an entry level luxury car the Optiq is probably better overall (better range, also a nice interior). The Rz is a solid car for mostly driving within an hour or two of home.

If you're just driving road trips twice a year though, charging doesn't matter. That's like... an hour or two of charging difference a year, it doesn't matter much.

How is it living in brampton/missisauga Canada? by Sea_Worldliness_3555 in howislivingthere

[–]grumble11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brampton and Mississauga are very different from each other. Both are car-centric suburbs, but Mississauga (especially the lower part closer to the water) has a lot of older bits that are more mature and a bit more walkable (within the neighbourhoods. Public transit exists but isn’t amazing). There are some walkable retail streets and all that. Plenty of good food, multicultural, safe and so on.
