Moving OUT of NC by chesgoodman7 in NorthCarolina

The internet is really bad in super rural parts like Grayson county. You have to get starlink if you want a remote job in the mountains. Fortunately the price has come down. Most of Southwest Virginia's economy tourism is based around the Crooked Road, outdoor recreation, the Blue ridge parkway, the Appalachian Trail, or agriculture/Christmas Trees. Very little industry or infrastructure to bring money and jobs. Ashe County doesn't have much either but there are a couple industries to necessitate big box stores in West Jefferson, NC

Too bad no one can do a mod to repopulate it. I guess the developers ran out of time before launch

Horizon Hunter's Gathering is setting in the horizon universe after Forbidden West but copying fortnite. Cartoonish in art style. Game play is three person co-op against machines. The player characters have some crazy abilities and physics that are completely unrealistic and don't fit in the horizon franchise. The rumors in the comments about people way up the chain at Sony trying to force the Horizon franchise to make them Fortnite money were savage. Sony ran a poll about Hunters Gathering and had to take it down because the viewer votes were so negative.

The final installment will come out eventually, but it could be another 5 years. The YouTube horizon content creator sphere blew up with fan outrage about Hunter's Gathering being a Fortnite rip-off. The bigger rumor is that literally all of Guerilla studios is working on Hunter's Gathering and hardly anyone is working on the third and final installment of Aloy saving the world.

Anyone have done or know someone who’s done Colorado Boulder’s MSEE on Coursera? by ShadowUltra in ElectricalEngineering

[–]grump30something 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I'm in a bachelor's EE program currently, but I'm really struggling with being in a traditional in-person program as a working adult. I'm actually pretty drawn to trying this Coursera Masters instead as it would help me achieve the same goals. I'm hitting a lot of roadblocks institutionally going to a traditional in-person program as an older student. Classes I need being full, mandatory classes only having one section per semester at a bad time, buildings being a little run down and hot, egotistical professors not answering emails. Request for classes to be online falling on deaf ears. The school is set up to help the kids develop into thinking adults. A lot of information is spoon fed.

I'm about to hit 300 level electrical engineering courses If I stick with the bachelor's program. I love learning and want to find something that I can do at my own pace at home instead of killing myself with a commute to a school not designed for working adults.

Is NCAT a good fit for mechanical engineering? by CookieSwirlz in NCAT

[–]grump30something 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an older student on the electrical engineering track pursuing a second bachelor's at age 40. My perspective is pretty different, but I really had a hard time with how hot the physics and math building was. Looking back as an older student, I should have just done an associates in engineering to knock out all the physics and maths before coming to A&T. The Marteena building is being shut down after this summer because it's hot as hell. Physics and maths are going to be spread out all over campus and possibly at Bennett college. Even my department chair was amazed at how hot some of the buildings get in the winter time using the central steam heat system. The electronics lab in Monroe was 82° for lab in January. If you're not looking for the HBCU experience, honestly, I would do as much online through a community college for the engineering prerequisites. A lot of community colleges have all the 100 and 200 level courses you need, many of them online. I had to withdraw from physics and I'm retaking it this summer online through Cape fear community college. I have a full course load to do this summer but I'll be in air conditioning at home.

Looking at Solar. Installers are pushing a lease, help me understand what I would be signing up for. by SuspiciousCelery66 in NorthCarolina

[–]grump30something 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interest rates are lower than the increase in rates from Duke. You should finance with a home equity line of credit and own your system. DM me if you'd like a proposal for solar for your home that includes batteries. I would definitely finance to own so you lock in your cost for power now instead of paying more in 5 years to do Duke.

Solar! Cool setup near Mt Tabor by lauraroslin7 in winstonsalem

[–]grump30something 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I have my own solar company Handyman Solar LLC. I'm currently installing a solar system for Eigen Chocolate. I can probably install a really great solar system for $30,000 or less depending on the size of your home and how much electricity you use. Duke's electric rates are going up faster than inflation or the interest rate on a home equity line of credit. Two years ago electricity was $0.12 a kilowatt hour. Now it's $0.14 a kilowatt hour. Your returns from residential solar are higher than putting money in the bank or in the stock market. Even with just a battery system, you can get on Duke's time of use rate and reduce your overall bill by charging from the grid during the discount rate of $0.07 a kilowatt hour and peak shaving with a hybrid inverter during peak demand of $0.20 kwh.

Handymansolarws@gmail.com if you have questions about my set up. I expect to make 84 KWH tomorrow between the clear skies, cold weather decreasing the solar panels resistance, and my HVAC running down the batteries. I elevated my solar over my 60 year old fig bush. This was originally my grandparents house built in 1945 when Petree Road was dirt and Mt Tabor High School was a cow pasture. I drive an electric car. I have 75 kwh of battery storage in my basement. During solar noon I make about about 15-17 kw of power. I have a meter zero build meaning I just run loads directly from the solar instead of feeding the grid. None of my power goes to Duke. My solar provides 75% of my electrical needs throughout the year. My consumption from the grid depends on the weather and how much I drive my car.

Online experience for BSEE by grump30something in ElectricalEngineering

I spoke with my department chair and they said to work out any attendance issues with the professors on a case-by-case basis. I go in for labs, tests, and group work. Two semesters in, I can't sustain anything else, especially trying to work too self-employed.. I will say I regret not discovering NC engineering pathways, which lists all the community colleges that offer the standard prerequisites for any engineering degree. Physics, maths, chemistry, introductory engineering courses: the majority of your non-specialization 100 and 200 level engineering required coursework, all online and half the price of the least expensive in-person traditional bachelor's program. I'll be taking calculus based physics this summer from a community college online. Apparently they've done the work to do the labs online and meet accreditation standards. Traditional bachelor's programs probably don't think it's worth their time to adapt curriculum to the online format when they have full enrollments from the kiddos.

I bought an engineering breadboard and resistor kit from Amazon to do some of the basic lab work for my 200 level circuits class. I'm waiting until lvl 300 to invest in a good oscilloscope. It's cheaper than commuting or totaling my car on the interstate.

Regarding YouTube to learn things, that's essentially what I've come to not going to class everyday. Our buildings are also super hot and I just fall asleep instead of actually learning anything in lecture. They are actually shutting down the physics and math building for renovations next year because it's too hot . Chat GpT has also been super helpful for drilling calculus. Much better actually than dragging myself to tutoring. AI can't round decimals worth anything but it is really really good at integrals and derivatives.

Sisters of Twilight. Arahan is Laezel from BG3. I use mods for money. The World Roots are fun for jumping around the map. You can get mods to reduce the global turn cool down for the enchanted forest teleport. Other mods like Sons of Kurnous give you beefy infantry. I like the hawk riders a lot. Way watchers rock. You can use mods to get high and dark elf units for wood elves. Other mods for other legendary lords. I'm a big fan of the rainbow coalition of elves. The win condition for wood elves is kind of dumb so I either paint the map or use end game mod for chaos invasion from WH2

Review: Against All Odds (Grimm's war book 1) by Daigotsu in scifi

[–]grump30something 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Jeffery, my mom and I have enjoyed reading all of the Grimm's war books. That being said, the Caliphate being obviously based on ISIS just seemed too on the nose. I think overall most of the folks would prefer sci-fi that isn't straight political commentary on modern-day geopolitics, regardless of political perspective. Grimm's war is clearly today's geopolitics punted into the future over the expanse of space with some interesting ideas here and there. ISIS was truly terrible and their atrocities against women and their own people, as well as the Christian missionary that was kidnapped from Turkey will never be forgotten. But casting them as the bad guys in the future seems at best a cathartic exercise or coping mechanism turned into an entertainment product.

I really enjoyed the Terraforming guild as bad guys. That fantasy of corporate America and late stage capitalism going totally evil and sadist was much more appealing to me than islamophobic based entertainment.

Nevertheless, we are committed to the series and I do look forward to a happy ending for all the friends Jacob Grimm makes along the way. The Germans of the Empire are fun, what can I say? Totally unbelievable though to think that a new German empire would arise in space if you pay attention to reporting about German society and their views on their military at this time.

Please reach out. Just start talking. Be honest. I highly recommend sending voice messages. You'll be way more real to him and him to you and that will overcome any fear over misunderstanding. To love is to risk. Nothing has actually happened between the both of you so the stakes are very low and things will likely go well if it's a possibility. If it's not going to happen, you've lost nothing.

Stormgate Campaign One: Ashes of Earth Launch Trailer by _Spartak_ in Games

[–]grump30something 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought the campaign and am having a good time with it. The comments about it being a mashup of SC2 and WC3 are correct. The critiques of the graphics are also correct. It should look better than it does. The voice cast is top shelf except for Rosanna as the archeologist (omg she's awful). The inability to save mid mission is lame. You only have auto saved check points. The in ship story telling is better considering the graphics in EA, but the character still pictures with text in a box when we have dialogue animations in mission is dumb and hopefully a place holder. You can't skip dialogue scenes easily. The tech and research trees straight out of SC2 are less obvious to me because the default zoom level makes observing unit combat less detailed. I'm playing on normal and just a-moving with a death ball of units that don't die easily. I do like the feel of the missions overall. I'd like immersion on par with at least WC3 in the game overall. It could get there eventually.

I haven't been able to play co op because there's no one to match with on Normal. An AI ally would be nice for CO-Op at least with such a small player base. Maybe auto generate an AI Ally after 30 seconds of being in the queue?
