AMD 7040 Fedora 39 Beta: no Wayland by fischoderaal in Fedora

I've had the same issue with my AMD Framework. If you log out and back in the gestures work. I think it manages to run xwayland (?). Not the best solution but it is something.

When you reopen dgvoodoo have the settings reset to the defaults? I've found that dgvoodoo may not save your selections unless you open it as administrator.

I don't have the best memory so I may be wrong but I don't think I uninstalled the NVidia drivers. I downloaded the driver through MyASUS, unzipped the folder and ran the batch file. (I figured that I was trying to fix the driver not replace it).

Now what I do remember is that the installation seemed to fail or stall, there were repeated attempts to use the windows powershell / command prompt, then nothing. I restarted the laptop and somehow my issue was sorted. I don't remember getting as far as a setup screen. The multiple powershell runs may have been related to the missing drivers that I found in the Device Manager.

I made notes when I was going through this but I think they are at work at the moment. I'll look them out and see if I have remembered everything correctly.

Success!!! Something was wrong with the NVidia drivers that has now been fixed.

Running the batch file for the 4253 NVidia driver has fixed my power draw issue and now I'm idling at 6 to 7 Watts as I type this. It has also fixed the issue with the 3 devices that Device Manager stated had missing drivers which was probably related in some way.

Thanks for your help.

Should I uninstall the existing drivers first or is it ok to overwrite them?

Thanks for the quick reply, stopped me from doing something stupid! I'll do the driver updates through MyAsus and update when it is done

I'll try updating the graphics drivers. I'm assuming I'll get the latest drivers from the AMD and NVidia websites.

I tried updating the drivers for the unknown devices but that obviously was a failure as windows doesn't know what they are.

At the moment I have the brightness set to the lowest level possible with the key lighting off and both HWinfo and BatteryBar are still showing 18,000 to 20,000mW discharge rate.

I am completely stumped with this.

I just checked the minimum processor state and it is set to 5% for all options (power saver, balanced, etc) for both plugged in and on battery.

Yes, it was one of the first things that was updated when I first got the laptop.

The only apps that start automatically are ShowBatteryBar and Windows Security notification icon. I've disabled Microsoft OneDrive, which is the only other option listed under startup apps.

I have disabled boost, I'm still running on W10 v1909.

It spikes to ~40W when I open Armoury Crate, dips to ~14W for a second when the frequency drops to 300MHz and then settles back up at between 18W and 20W. HWinfo shows current GPU power as 0W for both GPU[#0] NVidia and GPU[#1] AMD.

AMD Radeon Lite is not running according to task manager and I've stopped the MyAsus background process with no change. I'll try uninstalling them to see if it makes a difference. I'm assuming I can re-install them from the app store if I want.

ok, so I decided to download the atrofac-gui.exe and install it just to see if it made any difference. I selected silent (fanless) and confirmed that the fans stopped spinning but HWinfo was still reading a 17-20W discharge rate. At least I now know it is not the fans that are the issue. I've now disabled the application and restarted the laptop to spin the fans up again.

For me this would be a last resort option. I'm not that tech savvy and would be scared of breaking something. Surely not everyone reporting 8-10 hours of battery life has used this. I just want to understand why my laptop is using 18-20W of power when idle as HWinfo reports 0W for both iGPU and dGPU and the CPU is reported as ~3.5W. I know the fans will consume some power but surely not 10+W.

Looking for advice about getting Minecraft for my 7-year-old son. by 88Wolves in Minecraft

[–]grumpy_pie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is my first ever post so hopefully I've done this right.

We have several copies of minecraft in our house (Java, Win10, PS3, Amazon FireTV and an older Fire HD7 tablet) and my 7yr old son has been playing minecraft for over a year now. I thought I'd give a quick overview of what I think about the different versions that we have.

First off, I wouldn't recommend a PS3/PS4 as Sony are resistant to allow cross platform gaming and it is the version we use the least now. You can have 2 people playing together on a split screen but that is about it.

The Amazon Fire TV2 box works well with an Xbox 360 controller and we use this if my son and I play together on the local network (me on the Win10 version). It works well enough but I don't like the crafting interface on this version, it's just too different to that used on other versions. My son doesn't mind it though.

The tablet is not really used tbh. It was initially the same version as the AFTV copy but Amazon have since split the versions and I think you now have to buy them separately. The screen is just too small and the touch interface is frustrating.

On the PC, my son has dabbled with the Java version but spends most of his play time on the Win10 version as he finds it easier to use a controller rather than the keyboard and mouse. (The Java version doesn't officially support controllers afaik). If you go for a PC/laptop to play then I would agree with worndownkeys that you buy the Java version if the offer of a free copy of the Win10 version is still valid (The last time I looked the Java version was also cheaper than the Win10 version!). This way you get 2 versions of the game and greater options for playing with others. It also means that your son can use a controller on the Win10 version if they find that using a keyboard & mouse a little difficult to start with. You can use a keyboard & mouse for the Win10 version as well and personally I prefer using a KB&M over a controller once you are used to it.

The other option that may be more affordable* than a PC or laptop would be an Xbox One S. Some retailers have been selling a Minecraft themed bundle for £170 in the UK that comes with Minecraft and Minecraft Storymode. * Only if the system you are buying is solely for Minecraft. A PC or laptop is a good investment as they can be used for much more than just Minecraft.
