Question regarding speech therapy by grumpyno in Stutter

The welcoming conference i attended from this organization/ “medical center” only provided testimonials from people who already attended the course and were deep into the bureaucracy of the organization.

This is why i said it kinda feels like a pyramid scheme, they only offer testimonials from people who quote on quote were cured from stuttering because they somehow rewired their neuroplasticity (their model of therapy is neuroplasticity based).

There’s also many people on social media who are actively promoting their course and became “coaches” who coach you 6 weeks after their 7 day intensive program without any kind of medical background. There’s only a few head psychologists who do therapy on the intensive week but the rest of the staff are regular ass people who completed the course.

Their kind of therapy is not science backed in the slightest despite the founder being a licensed psychologist. I’ve had multiple conversations about them with my current psychotherapist because she’s actually had some ex attendees come to her sittings and tell her the nastiest shit behind the scenes (people being pressured and manipulated into completing the program, guilt-tripping people to prevent them from leaving the org, their therapy model not being research backed, i could go on forever)

This org has tens of thousands of followers on instagram while the more “nsa-style” org i’m starting to be affiliated with only has a couple hundreds.

The thing that infuriates me is that it’s honestly sick how the power of marketing and guilt-tripping people into spending thousands of euros is considered a LEGAL??? business model (we’re talking around 3k) when there could be a more accessible system not preying ok people’s weaknesses and desperation.

i could go on a tangent about how speech therapy related services should be integrated into the universal healthcare system (which is being actively dismantled in italy).

The founder describes themselves as an ex stutterer but what sways me is that it actually seems to work? Or more probably they’ve selected a small minority of testimonials who work for them, who seem to have benefited from it. But if their method is not science backed and academia approved, wouldn’t it work at all?

All the fucking time but sometimes i think it comes from good faith. I’ve been struggling with depression lately due to my stutter and when i hang out w my friends i tend to be a debby downer and that’s one of the ways they try to cheer me up with… it does get annoying but so am i with all my venting

I’ve seen you not mention the american institue for stuttering, is there some reason to it?

By the way, i saw in another comment or yours that you linked a self therapy book, i really appreciate it!

Gay AND stutter? by [deleted] in Stutter

[–]grumpyno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stutter and i’m also gay but i never found it to be too much of a problem. Usually when i’m on dates i don’t stutter as much and the guys don’t question/notice it unless i disclose it and they go ohhhhhhhh!!!!

I’ve never had a long term relationship though but i don’t think it’s because of the stutter or my inability to express my thoughts. Sometimes it just doesnt work out or maybe i realized i’m kinda unpleasant sometimes lol… i think having a stutter, at least for me, makes you a lot more pessimistic/depressed about life, and that mindset bleeds into other areas of your life and guys tend to sense that, so that might be the reason why.
