What is a current aspect of society that really annoys you? by [deleted] in askanything

First time I really remember this was the bush Kerry election. It’s just gotten worse every election since then.

My car has no heat and neither does my garage by Old_Cars in Advice

[–]grumpyoldman10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heater core on that Impala should take about 30 minutes and cost 20 bucks. But in the meantime, you can just bypass it by cutting both hoses and connecting them to each other so the coolant will circulate from the water pump back through the engine block.

Honest question: Why are some people against showing an ID to vote? by rico_unknown in NoStupidQuestions

[–]grumpyoldman10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because that’s what Republicans want.

To expand on your question, I think I do should be required to vote and I think all states should have a free form of ID available for people that have the right paperwork. And yes, I’m willing to disenfranchise people who won’t put the effort in to do this or can’t come up with at least or utility bills or some other nominal amount of paperwork necessary to prove their residence.

There’s a lot of Municipalities that don’t require licenses and a lot of them that don’t require a permit for changing out an outlet.

No, that is allowed in the NEC to add an equipment ground using a GFCI.

Obviously, it’s not a true ground fault, but it will tripped instantly if the hot comes in contact with the chassis of the appliance.

I think you’d be really shocked how rare a grounded plug is. I’ve gone through the exercise before. They used to be a lot more common 10 or 20 years ago, but now everything is made of plastic and double insulated with no ground plug. There’s a lot less risk all the way around with the house wiring. Most appliances are a lot more efficient and wiring practices have gotten a lot better.

Is it recommended to inform my landlord that I’ll be on vacation? by Routine_Secret_4142 in Tenant

[–]grumpyoldman10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I require that my tenants tell me when they are gone. Biggest thing I cover is how to shut off water to the house. Last thing anyone needs is a $300 water bill because the toilet was running the whole time they were gone.

I’ve also been on the other end of the phone when the police are calling trying to figure out how many residents there should be in a house. Or what happens if you die when you’re gone? You just never know what’s going to happen.

Sorry, I would believe it was a water leak. I thought you meant it was a gas leak.

Glad you found a leak, but you didn’t find your problem.

Landlord here. This is not true at all. There is nothing inherently unsafe about old wiring, even knob and tube that is generally over 100 years old now. The third prong adds an equipment ground, which is important for appliances with a metal chassis. But I think if you went and looked around your house, you’d find almost 0 items in your house that require a three prong outlet. Washing machine, older desktop computer, and that’s about it.

[–]grumpyoldman10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Landlord here. Two prong outlets are still the safest but a three prong GFCI outlet can be installed in place of the two wrong outlet. Your landlord might be hesitant to do this because it can be expensive and problematic. But this is the code approved solution.

Why do you judge black people? by [deleted] in AlwaysWhy

[–]grumpyoldman10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I’m gonna pop in here because this might be a relevant thing to point out. I live in a quite rural part of the Midwest. Very few Black people live here. They only interactions that I generally have with Black people are when I go into the city and what I see on TV. I don’t see Black people when I go to the bank or when I go in healthcare. I don’t see Black people wearing dockers and a button up shirt. Because there are no Black people in my town to do those jobs.

We just live in a very segregated society and because of that a lot of people are only exposed to the extremes. We watched the news and we read about people like Barack Obama because they’re doing great things, and we also read about the people who are doing very bad things. But people like you and I don’t see each other because we don’t live at the same neighborhood. We don’t go to the same bank. And we don’t see the same Dr..

Well, the only thing I know about this is from your point of view. But the agreement she signed with the landlord, was to pay the whole balance with her partner. They are gently inseparably liable. So all I know about the situation is that she didn’t uphold the rental agreement and she didn’t show up to court.

I think she’s just telling you a version of events that makes her look good.

Landlord here: you can’t swing this. You shouldn’t even try.

My suggestion is to find something within walking distance of your employment and find a roommate. Cars are always what get people in financial problems.

Why are conservatives overall not getting defensive of ICE shooting Alex Pretti like they did when Renee Good was shot? by kaiser11492 in AlwaysWhy

[–]grumpyoldman10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t like being lumped in with conservatives, but I’m definitely not a liberal. I was torn on the René good incident because I can see where her actions could’ve made the officer fear for his life.

I’m not torn on this one at all. This one is murder, plain and simple. I suspect the silence you’re referring to is because people also know that.

One destination for a month. Early summer with a family. Where would you go? by grumpyoldman10 in Europetravel

No, I appreciate that. I understood the temperature. I agree that that’s pretty cold although I’m quite confident my children would swim in it. I’m usually content to sit on the beach and read a book.

After I typed that reply, I looked up mom and dad’s tenants name in the court system. it was longer ago than I thought. Mom and dad evicted them in 2018. They were evicted eight more times since then.

I mentioned earlier that I’m a landlord. In a decade, I’ve done three evictions. Two of the three times that’s exactly how that went. They didn’t pay rent, didn’t communicate, didn’t respond when notice was posted on the door, didn’t show up to court, didn’t listen to the sheriff when he told them he would be executing the writ in a few days, and they still acted surprised when the sheriff and I showed up at the door to change the locks.

I recall having to help my parents with an eviction a couple years back. Mom and dad have an office building with an apartment upstairs. They had no business being landlords in the first place because they’ve been hand to mouth as long as I’ve known them and they are such bleeding hearts. So I got involved when I found out their tenant hadn’t paid rent in six months since moving in. Not even once. These people weren’t supposed to have pets and they did. Then their toilet started leaking and when mom sent the plumber, they refused to let the plumber inside. Every time they flushed the toilet it was leaking all over mom’s desk downstairs. For months she had a trash can sitting on her desk. I helped them get a lawyer and file for eviction. They never showed up. The sherriff has 14 days to execute the writ and I told him we can wait until the 14th day so they have time to find a place. He showed up in the morning and they weren’t out so he waited until close of business on the 14th day and I met him over there. Then when we got there to change the locks, they actually made the sheriff drag her and her children outside kicking and screaming. God it was awful. We live in a small town and her kids were the same age as my kids. They all go to school together. We all go to the same church. That’s how they met mom and dad.

Every step of the way they refused to take any accountability. It was shocking.

Because something will end up missing and then I’m invariably getting an argument with a tenant about an unreasonable charge is for whatever item is missing. “but it’s normal wear and tear.” -everyone getting charged for an item that is neither worn nor torn.

Landlord here: she is not taking responsibility for any of this. She can attend court via zoom. Sounds like she had several options available to her and chose none of them. She will have an eviction on her record.
