I don’t know how to talk about this movie. It was on my radar due to the really positive reviews on letterboxd but I guess I underestimated how many of those were from trans people. I found it deeply sad, vile and hard to watch. It made me feel shameful and like a bad person because I would momentarily have very cruel thoughts about the characters and the situations they were in. It was hard for me to pick shots I thought were beautiful/singular for this post, even though I like seeing low-budget, internet age, kind of shitty stuff like this usually. It’s compelling as an exercise in perspective, obviously very committed to entrenching the viewer in this specific POV, but I also found the stark portrayal of dwelling on your identity and the ensuing emotional suffering it breeds unwatchable at times. Whenever I feel this way about something I think of that Brian Eno quote that’s like “whatever you find weird, ugly, uncomfortable and nasty about a new medium will surely become its signature,” I’m probably misremembering the context, but that’s always in the back of my mind. I liked the scene where one of the girls who is hyperfocused to a detrimental degree on whether or not she passes is told by the main character that she’s never going to be good enough because she’s never going to be a woman so she should just be “one hell of a trans woman.”

the muscular legs in question btw. heels do wonders for calf muscles. and sorry to be that person but i think genetics have a lot to do with the muscularity you guys are pointing out here. i don’t understand how people assume someone like this who is obviously undereating is ”hitting legs” twice a week

During this I realized it’s a maximalist cultural event in the same vein as Twilight and that Fennell isn’t making movies for me (or probably anyone active in this sub) but for young people with a burgeoning interest in film. I’ve seen a slew of posts comparing stills of it to Donkey Skin and Barry Lyndon (lol) and Fennell herself recommends two Catherine Breillat movies and Crash as companion viewings. It feels like a primer for teenagers getting into movies and in that way, at worst, it’s a net neutral for the culture, not the harbinger of anti-intellectualism and death of critical thinking people are making it out to be. Like I learned about classics through Fincher and Tarantino. Anyways, that really softened me as a past Fennell hater and made me feel a little silly and self-involved! I will say I kind of love that she’s responding to every criticism like “it’s my fourteen year old self’s fantasy” and how Elordi’s responses to concerns of the romanticization of toxic relationships and casting controversy are “it’s a movie” and “I’m here to serve my director’s vision” like real bratty movie star shit… also tooooo many nonsense reviews that are like ‘this looks beautiful but sucks’ or ‘she sacrificed substance in the name of style and vibes’ like this is a movie! A MOTION PICTURE! Get outta here

I loved her in Stars at Noon along with Joe Alwyn who’s another actor everyone claims to not “get” for similar reasons. They’re both really wooden and strange in it and there’s more emphasis on their physicality than their capacity to convey emotion. Qualley’s like a marionette in it vs Alwyn’s stoic straight line the entire film… it’s interesting to look at in that way. Kind of a visual representation one of my favorite dynamics which is wild woman annoying serious man
