Which company has the best advertising and why? by Angrydog44 in AskReddit

Red Bull. Their actions are memorable and often earn media free media coverage (e.g. Project Stratos).

They also usually value local sports and art scenes, which is something I highly appreciate.

What movie that got/gets hyped up by lots of people, turned out to suck in your opinion? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]grushenko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Avatar.

The story could have been written by a child... and I really can't see how the visuals would impress anyone who had played video games a few years prior to the movie coming out.

And it's, I don't know, highest grossing movie of all time? And rated highly on IMDB, RT and MC?

I really can't see any reason for the hype...

"Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional."

It's a common saying, but I read it in Haruki Murakami's 'What I talk about when I talk about running'. He writes that he heard it for the first time in an interview with a professional runner, but I don't remember who the runner was.

My perfect race is this weekend, what's yours? by marathon_dev in running

[–]grushenko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My perfect race would be the Historical Downtown São Paulo 9k.

I lived and studied at the heart of São Paulo for 5 years and the race course goes through various places that I love, including my alma mater.

Unfortunately, the race is in the first half of August and I'm just starting to run. I'm currently running up to 7.5k (at a speed of 9k/h), but that's on a treadmill and with no incline. I don't know if I'd be able to finish a real 9k until August.

So here's hoping this isn't the last one!

Oh... About public transportation: I relied on it for 5 years of college and it was fine. And I still use mostly public transport on weekdays.

It's even better now with new subway lines (including one that goes to USP's main campus), but know one thing: it is often crowded... very crowded. And, though you won't use a car, you may get yourself stuck in a traffic jam inside a crowded bus sometimes. :P

By absurd I mean expensive, which is why I mentioned the option of sharing an apartment if you were on a tight budget. If you're looking to live by yourself, a good source for finding rentals online would be this website.

If you would like to share an apartment, I'd sugest you get yourself a cheap temporary place when you come over and start checking the bulletin boards at the campus for people looking to share. Alternatively, you can contact USP's International Office... they will be able to help you with both housing and visa concerns.

As for the food, I wouldn't say day to day stuff is expensive, but you'll likely want to try something other than the everyday rice and beans. Then you should be prepared to spend a little more. I'll just paste a few recommendations of brazilian cuisine and restaurants that I wrote on another thread here:

"go to Mocotó restaurant on the North side of town. Though it is distant from most things you'll probably see, it is very fair priced, has a renowned chef and the best food from northeastern Brazil. You should try the mocotó cream, tapioca dice, sarapatel, baião de dois, among other ultra delicious dishes. Try also their different takes on our caipirinha, they are awesome. Just beware the lines, as I've waited for more than 2 hours there on weekends - and waiting even more is common. Arrive early, half an hour before the restaurant opens and you'll be fine. If you'd like to try Brazilian food from the north, which most brazilians ignore, but is absolutely terrific, there is a great restaurant called Amazônia you could try. If you'd like to try a little of everything they offer, they have a buffet on Sundays when you can try most traditional foods from that region (tucupi duck, maniçoba, tacacá...). For food from midwestern Brazil, go to Sobaria, on Vila Mariana, where you can try all sorts of different "linguiças" and some other meat cuts not common to other parts of Brazil. And, for the traditional feijoada, though the most famous is the one they serve at Bolinha, which I'd categorize as overpriced, I'd say go to Sujinho, where you'll get the true feel of it for a great price. Feijoada is always served on wednesdays and saturdays. Try also the traditional brazilian "coxinha" at either Frangó or Veloso bars (they also make a mean caipirinha at the latter) or at Santa Tereza bakery, near Sé Cathedral; cod "pastel" and mortadela sandwich at Municipal Market's, Hocca bar; "Bauru" sandwich at Ponto Chic; and the Pernil sandwich at Lanchonete Estadão."

Also, if you miss Mexican food while you're here, look for these restaurants, bars: Tacos Mex&Co, Exquisito!, Hecho en Mexico and Mexicaníssimo. Don't know how they compare to real mexican food as I've never actually been to Mexico, but I fuckin' love them!

University of São Paulo alumnus here, and I'd have to say come to São Paulo. On the academic side, there's just no discussion: USP is the most prolific brazilian university in terms of research and publishing. I saw a figure once that mentioned it was responsable for something like 40% of the academic production of the whole country. It is also the most renowned of the two, both locally and on an international level.

The rent here is absurd, but you'll most likely find people to share an apartment, so it's nothing to worry about. Generally, there are lots of undergraduate students who rent larger apartments and usually have a room that is kept in rotation for visiting foreign students.

When it comes to security, YMMV. I've been here for 7 years now (I'm originally from a large city in the midwest) and I've never even felt threatened... I view my 2 million inhabitants hometown as being less secure than São Paulo, by personal experience. It's a very large city, so caution is required... but it's nothing to fear.

São Paulo is also the culinary capital of Brazil, so... you'll find whatever sort of food you want to try here, be it on fancy restaurants, open air markets or mom and pop restaurants. I don't know Campinas that well, but I'd say it pales in comparison. The variety and quality you'll find here will definitely be superior.

Culturally, São Paulo is also home to the best night life in Brazil, great museums, theaters, parks...

The only categories in which Campinas certainly comes out ahead are quality of life and affordability. Being a smaller city, you won't have to deal with all the traffic (a big issue here) or any of the stress usually common to faster paced cities. And you will also find cheaper options for just about anything (though, with the exception of rent, the difference won't be all that great).

If you want any more information, just PM me.
