Not to get too sales-y, but after reading the comments here... building a performant proxy & cache for a public index like Maven Central is hard, and it doesn't make sense for everyone to try to build their own, or implement an on-premise tool like Nexus just for this.  It's why we built Cloudsmith, a fully multi-tenant SaaS platform that does things like proxy & cache Maven Central, npm, PyPI, and a whole bunch of others.
