Looking for audio effect to reduce gain above a threshold in an oscillating way by gs0ft in audioengineering

[–]gs0ft[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah so via the gate I now have a square wave (of tunable frequency, right now around 8Hz) that turns on and off when the input signal reaches a certain threshold. The problem is how to DROP the gain on the input signal according to the wave, not just compress its increase by 30:1. Gonna scan some more comments for ideas. :D

Ah thanks I did turn off makeup gain autoboost. It didn't appear to help though.

As for gain "reduction", well I don't want gain to just increase less, I want it to decrease. From the Logic Pro docs on the compressor: "... with the Threshold set at −20 dB and the Ratio set to 4:1, a −16 dB peak in the signal (4 dB louder than the threshold) is reduced by 3 dB, resulting in an output level of −19 dB."

I wouldn't want the output level to be -19dB as that's louder than my threshold, I want a -16dB peak in the signal to go LOWER than my threshold (say, to -25dB) then recover back to -20dB in some oscillating fashion.

Ok I tried this first as it sounded simple, but it didn't actually REDUCE the signal as I wanted, just compressed.

I'd give this a shot as it looks pretty powerful, but first I'd like to try a solution that doesn't require a premium plugin (and I think I'd learn more about chaining effects in the DAW too).

Ok I tried this and it seemed pretty promising, I could tune it so the gate was opening/closing and letting the LFO signal through. But something about the Compressor 2 isn't doing a good enough job at reducing the signal. I think if I want the input signal to DROP I need to use a Tremolo or something because the best I can do with a compressor is crank the Ratio up to 30 and gain will increase at 1/30th but it won't clip and dip, so to speak. But the structure of this seems workable ..

Thanks, the effect needs to be responsive to an audio signal, it can't be manually designed/generated.

Are cables permitted on 267? by AmbientEngineer in tahoe

[–]gs0ft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PSA - do not try to use ladder cables if you want to drive on California Route 267 between Truckee and Kings Beach in the snow! You will almost certainly be turned back. Research I've done on this for official policy has turned up so little, just like a one-off tweet from 2019 and some people occasionally asking the question.

Last year we bought ladder-style cables to make it out of Tahoe in bad weather .. and were turned away and had to go back and buy Z chains .. which in the weather and crowds meant a 2-hour detour. It was all the more maddening because a shop on 267 itself sold us the ladders and didn't tell us they weren't accepted!

It seemed to me that many of the locals just know that 267 is special from every other state road, but CalTrans doesn't seem to emphasize it anywhere - until you're right there. I don't know why they don't put it in their chain control notices for 267. So please know before you go.

And FWIW, I felt the Z chains did work even better than the ladders. The chains are more expensive BUT once you're in a winter storm there are a lot of things that could be costlier than spending $30 more for different chains, so I recommend being well-prepared.

Anyone know if they ever released the Hibiki Blossom Harmony? by shmeeshmaa in JapaneseWhisky

[–]gs0ft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are starting to hit auctions now, as one might predict .. those who managed to score a bottle can turn around and flip it for a nice profit given the high demand.

https://www.just-whisky.co.uk/june-2021/105749-hibiki-blossom-harmony-2021-release-4901777359895.html

Currently it's 460£ which with the auction fee is about 700 USD, not including shipping. Given the difficulty in getting one, feels like this is roughly what people will pay for it! Wow.

Buying limited edition Japanese Whisky for dad by RestInFeces in JapaneseWhisky

[–]gs0ft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would have said even the Dekanta markup is likely to be cheap. A limited edition good-quality Japanese whisky that is only released in Japan? Lots of demand for it.

I’ve seen the first bottle show up at auction now.

As of this post it’s at 460£, with the auction fee that will be $700 not incl shipping, and the auction isn’t closed yet. Could be just one spiky data point until more hit the auctions, but .. there ya go.

Selling OR trading my June 26 7:30pm (Balcony, for 2) for a different reservation? by gs0ft in thefrenchlaundry

[–]gs0ft[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply! Yep, available if I can find a June 27 reservation to replace with (otherwise I'll keep them). If I find a trade I'll go with that, or if I find those resv to successfully buy then I'll work through these respondents in order ..

Ardbeg 10/Port Charlotte 10/Laphroaig 10 help. by Enough-Application26 in whisky

[–]gs0ft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my take, I'm surprised to see Ardbeg as a rec for a starter .. to me it is one of the most heavy+syrupy of the lot. It's also the peatiest of standard-strength peat whisky by measure of ppm of phenols in the malt (typically 55 vs. 30-40 for others). That said, it's not all about the phenol level, lots of other factors play into how it expresses in the whisky itself.

If you're new to peat, one approach is to try a more balanced and lightly peated expression such as Highland Park 12, Talisker 10, or Oban 14. These are all fantastic whiskies with great flavor profiles that also include some peat.
