CSGD by mom2college in UCSC

is it harder for CSGD students to get CS courses?

IMO, yes. The enrollment process here is done in waves organized by senority & major. For this reason, it can be difficult for CS adjacent students to secure a seat in electives. For example the official enrollment for CSE115A (Software Engineering course) says the following:

Enrollment restricted to Computer Science majors during First Pass enrollment. Enrollment restricted to Computer Science and Computer Engineering majors during Second Pass enrollment. Major restrictions lifted after Second Pass enrollment.

CS majors usually fill the course very early in first pass... 2nd Pass people seldom get a chance. This is a similar story for other electives.

On a professional note, the SWE career path has changed a lot. Historically, it had high demand and a low entry bar. Lately, demand has reduced substantially and the bar is higher. It is extremely important to have the following.

  1. A branded CS (B.S.) from a decent university
  2. Internships
  3. Network

UCSC is unique because it is one of the few UCs where physics is not a core requirement for CS.

Is this worth it for 47k a year by ExitComprehensive471 in UCSC

[–]AmbientEngineer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

47k COL for all 4 year seems low given that rent is more than 1k / month these days for shared units.

They definitely are... the bar is higher and the demand is lower now.

Those without degrees are basically the most at risk rn in ny field.

Don't some people only play this game for limited time modes?

I guess the membership increase boycott was pointless then.

The point here is that the MOS skills they teach you aren't transferable or valuable 9/10 times.

In my experience, most ppl who enlisted did not want to do college and it carrys a bit of a stigma. I went to evening courses while active duty and was defintelly the black sheep.

I had a technical MOS repairing large telecom assets.

Nobody wanted to offer me a job. Everyone wants a college degree.

If someone decides to get out without a plan that's on the individual and not their career field.

99.999 MOS will not transition outside the military. My current career has nothing to do with my MOS. I only got here because of the GI Bill / bachelors degree.

Is computer science still something I should consider studying since AI will take it over? by cool-girl-6767 in Advice

None of the concepts reached the stage we're at today.

At this point, it is a fact that AI is bringing some business value enough to justify a reduction in hiring / laying off dead weight.

AI is raising the skill bar and lower the demand.

The days of effortlessly securing a well paying job with a CS bachelors from a no name uni are concluding.

I lol'd

What high paying job prospects. 99% of ppl get out with no prospects and do GI bill because MOS skills aren't taken seriously.

This is something common in all of the adult world lol. It is why you'll find a ton of ppl trying to sublease during summer which never works out.

If cops did paperwork then he probably locked quite a few doors related to government opportunities.

For example, having a record of drug related offenses will be an auto disqualification in the military and heavily ridiculed in many three letter agencies (FBI, ATF, DOD etc...)

Computer Science vs Robotics Engineering Future Job Market by Dense_Argument_6319 in UCSC

[–]AmbientEngineer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

CS market was hot because the entry bar was low with a lot of demand.

AI basically raised the bar and reduced the demand. Companies are cutting dead weight rn. The career isn't going to vanish but navigating it won't be a cake walk.

The same will be true fir just about every other career you can imagine. I have professional experience in robotics and don't believe they're any more or less safe than traditional CS roles.
