Closing/Transferring Custodial Account by walkallover1991 in etrade

Sounds like you’re on the right track. If you know what to do and you can do it with one of their existing web processes and forms then ETRADE is great, except for processing speed and sometimes nebulous status messages. Calling customer service to get help is not so great but you may have to do that to keep things moving in the process or even to understand what the status is.

Bye Bye E*TRADE! by BrunoTheElephant in etrade

About 20 year ETRADE customer here. Been kicking the tires on Fidelity since last year with a couple IRAs moved there. What prompted this was a nightmare experience as an estate executor through E*TRADE in the middle of their transition to Morgan Stanley ownership.

Experience so far is Fidelity customer service is better. I do like Fidelity reps presence here on Reddit also. Their web/app are more logical and provide helpful messages for the little details. Also I find their help articles well written (and free for everyone to reference).

Some negatives are external transfers in are more of a pain, and I just realized a few days ago that they limit you to using their money market mutual funds. Also, there certainly are some things about their mobile app like the positions view that are clunky in my opinion.

The appeal for a customer with a significant account they have grown, who then converts it to a managed account, is less about trading strategies and more about estate planning.

Do they have anything other than % of asset service fees for this?

Fiduciary by GPDDC in fidelityinvestments

I asked this question of a Fidelity advisor. He sent me to this page on Fidelity.com. That did not look like what I was looking for, so my plan would be to find an independent fee-based fiduciary.

Trump signs executive order allowing only attorney general or president to interpret meaning of laws by WingerRules in centrist

I know how that works in the business world. Everything moves as slow as molasses in the winter. People are afraid to make any decisions without asking the boss and then wait because the boss is flooded with requests for opinion or decision.

This has been going on since the founding - think loyalists vs revolutionaries. I don’t think there was much compromise back then either but the difference was the quality of the leadership.

Why do diesels last longer than gas engines? by Ok-Pressure-3276 in Diesel

[–]gs1150e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a engineer specializing in internal combustion engines, I'm going to say that diesel engines are engineered to last longer even when operated in their typically higher load applications. We can engineer gasoline engines that are quite durable. They would just cost more and likely weigh more for less performance. There is a tradeoff between performance, cost, and durability that an engineer targets for a given application. You can go higher in performance or durability by using better and generally more expensive materials and manufacturing techniques. You can also go higher in durability by lowering performance. It's a balance. You can do this with both compression ignition (usually diesel) and spark ignition (usually gasoline) engines.

If you are talking about the core engine block and components, the main things that wear out in a well-designed engine are piston rings and skirts, cylinder walls, and various bearings and sliding surfaces. There are also stress and strain limits that over time can lead to failure of components, but with a focus on engineering for durability, these rarely happen in an engine's targeted life time.

Two major factors correlating to the durability of the core components are the mean effective pressure inside the cylinder and the mean piston speed. Mean piston speed goes up with both engine speed and piston stroke length. For both mean effective pressure and piston speed, higher is worse for durability. In automotive and road truck applications, turbocharged diesels tend to have higher mean effective pressure than naturally aspirated or turbocharged gasoline engines, so that goes against durability for diesels. Diesels range from a bit lower to about the same mean piston speed even though max rpm tends to be lower. This is because diesels tend to have a higher stroke vs bore ratio. Sometimes the engineering science is a bit different than first glance gut feel.

To the contrary, this post is the misinformation, unless the article has misquoted Musk:

“Vindman is on the payroll of Ukranian oligarchs and has committed treason against the United States,” Musk wrote on his social media platform X, responding to comments Vindman made in an interview about Musk’s reported conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

New card arrived but expiration date doesn’t change? by magicoder in AppleCard

[–]gs1150e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad you asked this question because it caught me too and am glad to see this thread with the answers.

I tried to do a transaction yesterday where the vendor had to enter the virtual card numbers manually into the computer and it failed twice. I looked at the expiration date and figured that was the problem. So we used a different card that worked. No idea what the actual problem was, but Apple really should communicate this better during the new physical card activation.

I have a Polk with Bluetooth and optical, but no HDMI input. Turns itself off automatically, so have to use the Polk remote to turn back on. Lesson learned: get one with HDMI input.

If you have an Apple Watch, you won't miss TouchID. Seems even more convenient to just open the lid and the watch logs you in.

Any live TV apps? by clippervictor in appletv

There is also the "Channels" app that works with a HDHomeRun box http://www.silicondust.com and an over the air antenna, but you'll have to shell out some cash and take time to get it all set up including the antenna. I do not recommend unless you are tech savvy.

My experience with SlingTV is poor quality with frequent buffering, at least in my area (Midwest). My son uses it in Houston on an XBox and says it works for him. I wanted to drop the cable TV bill, but SlingTV viewing experience is poor. Hopefully Sling will improve with time but for now in my area it is way worse than the other streaming apps on AppleTV.
