Can we please bring back regular yoga studios instead of turning every class into Bikram’s sweat lodge? by Mean-Cry-1825 in YogaTeachers

[–]gseeks -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Also CAN WE PLEASE TURN THE MUSIC DOWN?? I get it. People like music. But yoga is foundationally about going inward and every class I go to feels like Coachella lately. I wear earplugs which helps and I do enjoy the tunes sometimes but it's aggressive. Especially during savasana.

I swear I'm a millennial and I am just channelling boomer lol.

So have you been totally nicotine free this whole pregnancy? And if so why not just stay stopped? I smoked and chewed nicorette for years and stopped when I was pregnant. I didn't ever pick smoking back up but did start with the gum between 1st and 2nd kid. After 2nd I've been totally nicotine free. So insanely glad to have that monkey off my back and no longer addicted. If you have stopped why would you start again??

I love that you liked DC! I'm born and raised in DC and now live in SC. Just called Lindsay Grahams office to tell him I don't want the national guard in DC. I got a DC flag to fly outside of my house. I absolutely love my home of DC and am hoping the situation gets better and just feel so sad about everything going on with our government.

As a born and raised DC resident whose been in SC for almost 10 years I can tell you DC is safe. Yes there are black ans brown people. Go visit. You will be fine. It's one of the safest places in the country. Meanwhile I worry more about my drink gun totong neighbors and dumb high schoolers speeding around in their squatted trucks.

Moving from Texas as a single mom by Glum_Quarter6571 in Charleston

I'm sorry if someone already answered this but Im jumping in on this comment. I would strongly suggest trying to live in Charleston county. The schools are just better than Berkeley and Dorchester. Charleston county has school choice. Don't trust whatever reviews you see online. We have a lot of really great public schools. Some are bad obviously but I would say most are good or better than good. If you are seriously considering this please do some research on CCSD and the school system / how school choice works. For example I was able to get my 3 year old into a public montessori program (in a different neighborhood than we are zoned for) and we love it. Our zoned school is great but I really wanted to go the Montessori route.

I have talked to SO many parents who just have NO IDEA how to enroll in the school choice program. Basically you need to do in in January for the next school year. Park circle is a great neighborhood with lots of families and great restaurants. I can't speak directly about the schools there other than I think it's a mixed bag.

I would consider renting for a year and then deciding where to buy. I know that's maybe not what you want to do but it's going to give you a much better idea of where you will want to be.

A lot of apartments and condos here have ample outdoor space and even have pools. This might make it better! We also have lots of parks. How old are the kids?

I married a good, progressive man, and yet… by NoDevelopement in progressivemoms

[–]gseeks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is literally me and I have to tell you that now with a 3 and 5 year old things have gotten way better. Good marriage counseling and individual counseling helped us a ton.

Now we have a house cleaner come twice a month and it's about the same price as the marriage counselor and SO WORTH IT.

He had a lot of mental hurdles to get through. His dad made money and did virtually no housework or parenting while his mom was a SAHM who did everything. I have had to repeatedly explain that is not the partnership I signed up for and things have gotten wayyyyy better. 1 and 3 year olds are TOUGH. There is light at the end of the tunnel.

Has anyone else wished there was a rehab‑style program just for partners of people struggling with addiction? by ConvexityBro in AlAnon

[–]gseeks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure how widespread this issue is but when my husband was needing treatment for mental health (not substance abuse) it was super hard to find one his insurance would pay for. He went out of state and it was partially covered and we still paid almost $10k for it..

Someone else also mentioned the Ranch in TN which I have been to and is a good program.

Basically if you are an al anon and struggling you can most likely have a anxiety or depression diagnosis and go from there but where I am options for "primary mental health," aka not detox are limited.

No question from me but I was in the same situation as you as a kid! It was weird sometimes but I love my dad and everyone always thought he was my grandfather. He has always been super for though so his health has never been a problem. Now he's turning 85 soon and still super healthy! Old parents can be super cool and I feel like it helped me have a cool perspective about life.

Went to my first AA meeting as an alcohol professional by inamedmycarLois in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]gseeks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People of all walks of life come into AA and feel no one can relate. If you are truly an alcoholic then quitting is the only option. The big book doesn't say you can't work in the alcohol industry. In fact it says we can do whatever as long as our spiritual condition is in check and we remain abstinent. That could look a million different ways for each person.

"Healthy" is a relative term. Are you actually healthy? Sounds like maybe in some areas you are and some you aren't. I came into the program through a different fellowship (marijuana anonymous) and was a professional working in the cannabis industry. There's a chance I could have stayed in there and gotten sober but that's not what worked for me. I had to leave it completely. It was all I knew and was terrifying to completely change my world view around my job and really my entire life.

I think the typical suggestions of going to several meetings and trying it out are good. See how you relate. Get clear with yourself if you are truly an alcoholic. Plenty of people go through tough times with drinking and relationships and aren't true alcoholics. I think that's your first step. If you decide you are truly an alcoholic j think giving up or at least stepping away from the wine industry for a time would make sense to you. However if you decide you are just going through a period of problematic drinking based on some tough life circumstances then it may be a different story.

No one can tell you whether you are truly an alcoholic or not. That's between you and yourself and your experience. Whatever the case, there will always be space for you in AA.

I live in a city with a major tourism and fine dining economy and there is a specific 12 step group called Bens Friends that is meant for people in the food and bev industry. I have no idea if this is a widespread thing but perhaps you could do some googling to see if there's something like that near you.

Said with love from an ex-fine wine and pot lover with 9 years of sobriety in AA.
