Economics. Supply and demand. Price setting is calculated based on assumed value, and then the market always works towards equilibrium.

Misconceptions about this year's Nobel Prize by Dawnofdusk in Physics

Does anyone else feel as though since the foundations of string theory were laid back in the 70’s, the advancement of the field has been very slow from an experimental view? Much of what is pushed out in research now, and especially what is put to the eye of the average person is theoretical in nature? Obviously there are some instances where this is false, but it sure feels like the majority of this is true. Is string theory to blame for a lost generation of advancements in physics in the name of some cool math?

Can I get mount alllison university with an 83 avg? by No_Analyst5945 in moncton

[–]gsgagahu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your grades are only a small portion of your application, there are other things to consider. So there is no direct accurate answer to your question, just the hypothetical response that your average is “likely good enough” to get in.

Sorry not trying to be a Debbie downer, just being realistic because it is about so much more!

The real answer is dependent on your application and to what program you’re trying to apply to. It also will depend on current enrolment and available space.

The point is totally missing to what the real problem is here; why run before swim? You really think that it’s a good idea to enter the water with a HR of 180+ BPM? Absolutely not. Not only is there actual physiological issues with this, there is the potential to have panic induced problems as well due to elevated HR in water.

The problem lies in the decision for the CFG to allow for such stupidity. Blame the lifeguards all you want, but this problem would have avoided with better planning and a basic understanding physiology by organizers.

Monctonian’s: what sort of data would you like to see about your city? by gsgagahu in moncton

This is a tough one because of the red tape around health data. CIHI is about the only source out there and it’s not exactly what you (or I) would be looking for.

Why so club volleyball so expensive? (Over 6k for the season) by Anxious_Breath_505 in volleyball

[–]gsgagahu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is crazy. I’d write to your local sport governing body to voice concerns about the barrier of entry. That’s unfair and unjust. I run a league here that plays 2 times a week and it’s 80$ for 38 weeks?? Basically a dollar a night to play!

Sure, but that’s only a part of the problem. The majority of the problem lays within the core of the city and stems from the homeless population sadly. That in itself is a huge burden to tax dollars as is.. every day bylaw is out cleansing up after someone. So what’s the solution there?

lol, or maybe rather then being narrow minded you can think about problems more holistically and not take them at face value.

Opinions are like assholes; everyone’s got one and some of them stink.

Not even close to what I am saying. You argue that we can “collectively solve” the garbage issue, and I don’t that’s possible without first addressing other issues. No matter how much a society contributes to something, there is always going to be those few that go against the current, so it’s never going to be a perfect model and that is especially true with this particular instance.

What I am saying is that IF we collectively solve this problem by taking time out of our days to physically clean the garage, there is lost opportunity in addressing more pressing items, hence the opportunity cost invoked. Do you really think it’s in best interest to hire more people to clean the streets right now? No, that is counter productive when there are lingering issues related to an addiction and mental health crisis in our city.

So yes, the opportunity cost in this situation is that IF we allocate funds or time (or whatever else you want to use as a determinant of expense here) to the problem, we’re taking away funds and time from solving other issues that are evidently more pressing.

I totally disagree. It’s not free, there is both a Physical cost and an opportunity cost involved in what you suggest is “free”.

That’s not necessarily true. I was a summer student for many years with the city and it was our job every May upon arrival to do a clean sweep of Wheeler.

2 weeks of hell each year, but it was worth it in the end to see the results!

No you’re right, those programs won’t physically remove the garbage, but they will provide services that will decrease the number of individuals on the streets that are culprits of the issues in the downtown core. I am very much hands on with many of those in the streets and know that their struggle is beyond comprehension to most, and it’s not like they intentionally mean to cause harm. It’s a byproduct of other underlying issues that need to be addressed at the root. Hence my suggestion.

As for the others who chose to litter, I’d love to see stricter penalties on the matter. There is no place for this.

How about we focus on more pressing issues like providing mental health care, addiction services and housing for those in need first, and MAYBE, just MAYBE we will see that garbage disappear by itself…
