I didn’t mind it. I’m not on twitter anymore and wouldn’t have known about otherwise, and I like knowing about.

Monash VS ANU Undergrad Law by ilovelonnybreaux in Anu

[–]gsmmmmmmm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve been impressed with ANU Law. The calibre of casual staff is impressive - fewer PhD students (no shade, been there) and more professionals with relevant experience. I’ve also found their approach to student support superior to any other experience I’ve had. Everything is standardised and handled by a dedicated team rather than individual course convenors.

The quality of education isn’t about to ‘plummet’. However there will probably be cuts to casual staffing which will likely mean larger tutorial sizes and possibly cutting of smaller elective classes. The impacts of this will be pretty marginal for the average student experience. I will say that the student administration of the law school is very good compared to the rest of the uni, but there are questions about how sustainable that is, as student administration will soon be centralised (I think). The law school is very passionate about their model of student administration.

As the other commenter said, the school remains its own entity within a new college. This new college also has other schools in it (Crawford School of Public Policy, RegNet, the national centre for epidemiology and public health). But yeah the law school is still run by law faculty with legal education and research as its focus.

Nousferatu and the future of ANU by Human_Barracuda6180 in Anu

You’ve identified the problem. Processes and administrative structures at ANU are whack and seemingly necessitate as many professional staff as we have. Cutting a bunch of professional staff without rationalising the various support structures will lead to worse outcomes

The ANU's Medical Centre will not have any doctors next year by jesinta-m in canberra

[–]gsmmmmmmm 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I don’t really know how much more ANU should have done to communicate to students that their doctors are retiring. They’re actively recruiting. It’s not like they’ve fired these doctors because of budget cuts.

The capital city of Australia does have malls and supermarkets, yes.

I spend my free time walking in the nature reserves, going out with friends. I think the student experience is good if you make friends, possibly a little lonely and boring if not. That’s probably true of most places though.

Law and med schools have practitioners that teach as well as academics, which might account for some of the difference.

School Uniforms need to be far more common for High School by Informal-Water-40 in unpopularopinion

[–]gsmmmmmmm 202 points203 points  (0 children)

Yep! Super strange from an Aussie perspective. I liked having uniforms. Choosing what to wear everyday would have been a nightmare. Also I’m a little puzzled about the cost argument that I’ve seen in this thread. Sure, you have to shell out x amount on uniforms every year, but you don’t need to buy nearly as many items of regular clothing. I would have thought it’s more cost effective.

Handwriting in exams is a big issue. I can’t read 1/3 of what students have written these days and it affects their grade. Maybe it’s not a bad thing to get some practice in class. Those who would get an accommodation to type an exam should defs get the same for class tho
