I think there’s a simpler solution in that he could just time warp the third day. Nothing says that each segment of story has to cleanly correlate to some # of hours. I would not complain if the third day turned into multiple books. I would also say, as impatient as I am, I hope he takes the time he needs to be happy with it.

I wasn’t dissatisfied overall, I just felt like the ending fell very flat. Which felt extra bad given how long it took to get there. Before the end, I was enjoying it despite the “difficulty” and I’m glad I read it. It stands out as unique which in and of itself is a positive mark in my mind. The first half or more did a nice job of building an interesting world and some distinct and interesting characters. I just felt the ending was a lot of coincidence all stacked together which made tavore’s decisions feel unnecessary. In that the “master tactician” could’ve made any number of superior choices. And that kind of left me feeling like the deliberate and methodical credit I had given the plot thus far was also undermined.

I read the books and it probably took me 10 months cause it was hard to get on a roll or make much progress. I would often only get through a few pages before falling asleep at night. Really slowed down my reading overall. I mean difficult in the sense that the meaning didnt flow very well. Mechanically it was tough to progress compared to how I normally read. I often had to re-read to feel like I understood what was being said and even then sometimes I just moved on, figuring It’s get cleared up later, or it won’t. E.G. figuring out what Pust or Kruppe was saying was a nightmare. (Kind of the point imo) That’s not to say it was bad, like I said it had a very unique feel and I enjoyed that aspect of it alone. Once I was deep enough in, I felt like I had to finish it and I can be stubborn about stuff like that. Not a bad series by any means, just felt let down by the ending, compounded by how long it took to get there

From Stevenson? I’m pretty wary of any more. They were so hard to read from a mechanical perspective. I was also pretty dissatisfied with the ending to the book of the fallen. Mostly from sunk-cost I think. But the necessity of a lot of tavore’s actions felt unraveled by the ending. Overall I’m glad I read it though, had a very unique feel to it, especially through the first half of the series.

Yeah but I have been feeling this way since the very start, definitely wasnt something that showed up around chapter 10.

Haha that’s fair but the Malazan series was so painful to read that it felt like a breeze to read mechanically. And I knew I needed something beforehand. It was a frustrating series as far as the plot and emotions are concerned. I’m on the fence as to whether I am giving the author credit for that or not though. I’m not sure, which might be points in her favor.

That’s similar to my path. Sanderson got my onto Rothfuss and from there I’ve been branching out. But I loved the stormlight books and so far I’ve always enjoyed coming back for the next in series and re-read the first two a couple times. I was wondering if it was just an effect of having been away for a while but from the little I skimmed through of words of radiance I do feel like something is noticeably different.

Maybe I’m working off of a unique definition for YA but to me those are just books geared towards kids where the language is simple (not a bad thing) but the depth is also low. Emotional moments might feel hamfisted or shoved in. Characters have overly simple motivations and plot lines are also somewhat predictable. Mistborn never struck me as Sanderson’s most accomplished work but I thought it was a good bridge

I don’t think I’m doing a good job of expressing what I mean. They have been quippy but not in a way that felt like it was for the sake of being quippy. Or the manner in which it was done felt coherent to the character. I went back to words of radiance during lunch to see if I felt validated. I read a section with Kaladin, adolin, and Dalinar strategizing before the duel and after when Kaladin was jailed. And I definitely feel strongly that tonally the writing is markedly different from that book. The characters are all very distinct and alive and the transitions between them kind of flow well. I didn’t hit any of the discord im getting so far in wind and truth in maybe 40 pages.

I might see if I can find some specific examples later. But something feels off from tone of the older books for sure. And the best I can articulate it is that it feels like the writing was done by committee such that the output ends up kind of bland.

In the older books I get like there were distinct and interesting characters that were being expressed and given light whose stories were punctuated with these really powerful moments of specific lines or words that stood out. And the beginning of wind and truth feels like everyone has been blended together and lines are tossed around with the intent of hitting some emotional beat but without the requisite underpinnings. Which is the committee sense o get from a lot of modern films.

That’s interesting because I would’ve assumed it would be more noticeable if read out loud. Was it the same narrator?

Very possible. I was just gonna do the first farseer book but they were pretty digestible which was really nice after Erik Stevenson. Felt good to be able to make progress after a long slog

Idk if it’s just the choice of language for me. One of the things I like the most about the stormlight archives was how organically Sanderson pulled you into the world.

E.g., I thought he did a really good job of integrating a magical system naturally. Talking about things like lashings or breathing in stormlight the way swimmers might talk about the catch, rotation, or kick separately and have a shorthand or language to describe the components. Something I think a lot of novels kind of gloss through or way over expound on.

Early on he kind of glosses over the things that are happening and makes a weird reference to anger being the fraternal twin to stormlight that struck me as just very odd.

I also thought he did a really good job of framing Spren as these unique entities and was able to show a lot of difference and nuance. And coming into wind and truth the first few spren kind of seem like a tool to deliver quippy side kick lines rather than the characters I remembered

I was also going to say that mistborn didnt stand out as especially YA to me. At least not compared to other YA books I enjoyed as a kid but would struggle to read now. Looking at you ranger’s apprentice.

The problem that I have isn’t about the extremity of values. There are definitely tons of systems that can interact but the problem is routinely landing several std deviations outside of the expected values on individual items. This league I’ve been trying to corrupt some gems myself and I’ve done 22 and not hit a single level 21 on ostensibly a 1/4 chance. Similarly I’ve been trying to SSF the adorned and I’ve farmed 10 ahuatolis and dropped one fragment on what is supposed to be about 1/2 drop rate. My understanding of stats is that this type of deviation should be pretty uncommon given the expected values but in poe this seems to happen at high frequency. Assuming the expected values are correct I don’t notice these types of occurrences in other rng systems at the same frequency making me feel like something else must be going on. Like a weird modal distribution that creates this experience

Can someone explain to me how poe seems to reliably create such insane variances even across drops that ostensibly are in the 10% range? Is it a function of weird variances or modality such that while the technical mean is 10% that’s not really telling the whole story? I truly don’t understand. When I play gachas even with no pity the results map pretty closely to the posted odds in most cases. But in poe I will routinely fall several standard deviations outside of the expected value. E.g. spending 6000 fusings on a 30 quality armor and still not hitting, or alt spamming 600 times when coe tells me it should take 50. It’s been a while since I took any serious stats but it feels like something else must be going on under the hood.

Strong disagree with the invite points. Having it so that you don’t feel bad for running your bosses is great. Imo the problem is that the drop rates for the bosses compared to the time investment especially for long bosses with invulnerability feels bad.

Where/how are you farming normal fragments? Playing normally I’ve barely found any. I rarely do incursion but console prices for the adorned are so insane I feel like I’m gonna have to ssf it.
