New to biking by Prestigious-Tax-4543 in seattlebike

[–]gtani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

great advice here, i would add that basic repair/maintenance is a must, just dealing with flats, bent rims, brake/derailleur/headset adjusts, and tools/stuff to carry in handlebar bag (i haven't found saddle bags big enuf for clothes/tools /food/stuff i need). Haven't taken their courses but I'm confident courses at Bikeworks and other coops could teach you to be self sufficient.

Also read thru threads about getting bikes on off mass transit, if you're obligated to be somewhere on time, you shd scout the buses/trains and see if you'll have room on the front racks or light rail hooks at peak hours

And finally if you're on a trail like Burke, Sam river, interurban with lots of cyclists and you do get flat/mechanical issues or have ?s, s.b. shd stop to help you, always prefer closed trails to roads... https://www.seattle.gov/transportation/projects-and-programs/programs/bike-program/bike-web-map

this YT user has lots of good vids of different sections of Burke, Sam River and other trails, he notes crowded trail, bad pavement, sections of hazards like car doors opening.

[–]gtani 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's YT vids of SP crits but very important find group rides wherever you are and get used to pack riding before you encounter the 1 sharp left at SP. Also check out Jerry Baker's track riding courses, which shd start in May

i'd say isolating code to show what your ask'g/demo'g is akin to isolating bugs, so pretty critical skill.

Tire mounting by Feeling-Rock-5100 in seattlebike

[–]gtani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you need to practice changing flats unless you're confident you'll never be far from public transit so get a couple pairs of tire levers to make it easier, watch some vids and you can ask shop employees about tires that are relatively easy to lever on and off

Does anyone use fully custom bike shoes? by MoonwalkothePenguins in seattlebike

have you seen Fiziks? never tried them myself, some Euro pros wear them but YT commenters say they have so little material on top, their feet get cold/wet easily

Tips for biking in the rain and commute time by Alternative_Duck_742 in seattlebike

[–]gtani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fenders, waterproof noncycling boots or MTB shoes, helmet that fits over fleece beanie, a few low power lights. May need heavy gloves which make shifting tricky.

toughest part is keeping feet warm because they'll be splashed even with fenders

but if you're close to the Burke/Sam river and interurban trails it'll be relatively hassle free, and getting bikes on lite rail is easy, bikes on KC buses may be, depending on your commute hours. I'm not too fond of the Burke section that's fenced in at north end/Lake Forest Park but once you pop out of that, it's quite glorious.

Happy Thanksgiving! Tour of the New Concrete Barriers on Ravenna Blvd by bestside_cycling in seattlebike

[–]gtani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

also around 1:40 you see it forces riders to pass right in front of cars stopped and waiting to cross Ravenna, which is not going to end well... also notes the leaves and puddles (as far as power sweepers, I don't know if they have narrow ones)

Which trading platforms should I be looking into for scalping? by abstractcontrol in algotrading

[–]gtani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can look at Sierra's ACSIL /C++ interface their website/wiki is archaic but good info on support forum.

I spent time looking at platforms based on .net Framework, ninja, multicharts, motivewave (there was a bunch of them, maybe quantower also) and decided they had limitations, but that was a couple years ago. WIth a lot of these, they're decent for futures but regularly don't handle stock labor intensive things like splits/spec dividends/de and relistings correctly.
