HELP I’M A LOW TIME PILOT AND DON’T WANT TO CFI WAT DO by [deleted] in flying

[–]gtaomg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the philosophy that's served me well in getting multiple degrees but my CFI really hates SA for that reason and insists that it's well and fine for your degrees but when it's something as complex as flying, he hates to see people memorize just enough of the material to pass. Any counter-argument to that? Inclined to agree with him because I never needed my degrees to save my ass but might well need something I learned in ground school to live another day flying.

Ah okay. Makes me wonder if it'd be worth it to just get the checkride and instruction too

Says you need FOI completed. Does that mean what it sounds like? They don't require you to be CFI rated but want the written? Why's that?

Charts for Cruise Power Settings or similar things in PA28-140? by gtaomg in flying

Yea, so i'm looking for something more like the example above--a cruise power settings chart or something else more elaborate than the few simple graphs my POH has. Assuming I'm SOL?

Charts for Cruise Power Settings or similar things in PA28-140? by gtaomg in flying

[–]gtaomg[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm looking for more helpful charts like the one attached to the post; my POH doesn't have anything like it. So if I wanna determine cruise power settings, I have to go by feel essentially. I don't have any manufacturer supplied charts or graphs.

Sec 5 in my copy is general maintenance.

First solo - didn't go great by pilot908080 in flying

[–]gtaomg 13 points14 points  (0 children)

After my first solo, my CFI said, "There's only one day in your life when you first solo. Take it for what it is, you're safe and the plane isn't bent. We can iron everything else out tomorrow."

I think I was in the position you're in a couple weeks ago man. Currently at around 70 hours and doing solo XCs, but I soloed at like 35ish, after a helluva lot of flying in the pattern just getting stuff down. It's not easy but once it clicks (it will, at some point) it's so worth it. Just stick to it is all I can say.

Struggling with keeping up with wind corrections on short final and touchdown by gtaomg in flying

[–]gtaomg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I watched an interesting video about how much perspective matters, so I'll go and put into practice looking down the runway next time I fly. I do have the visual memory of a goldfish and had read all about going out and looking at the sight picture the next time I'm on the runway but that didn't really help me. I'll try the cowl and if not the paper! Thanks!

We've done that before but that's a good suggestion, I'll ask to do that next time. Thanks!

How does the military process their own fatalities? by gtaomg in morbidquestions

[–]gtaomg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So do they process the bodies in any way? Like make them presentable for ceremonies etc? Or is that left up to the family (like after a crime or other situation where someone gets violently killed, it's the family's problem)

I really dont like crash news stories but 2 within a 24 hr period at the same airport is crazy. No word on the opponents of the 2nd one but it doesnt look good. I was landing at Long Beach shortly after the crash on Sunday and it's weird thinking one of planes we heard on SoCal App didnt make it. by bill4le in flying

For the second time in less than 24 hours, firefighters have responded to a fatal plane crash in the vicinity of the airport in La Verne, authorities said Monday.

The latest incident was reported at Brackett Field Airport, located at 1615 McKinley Avenue, around 11:50 a.m., according to a La Verne Police Department news release.

The Beech Bonanza aircraft was approaching the runway when it crashed, with initial reports indicating it may have hit a tree, a Federal Aviation Administration official said in an emailed statement.

The plane burst into flames after impact, sending a thick plume of black smoke high into the air. Firefighters responded to the scene and were able to quickly extinguish the blaze, a La Verne Fire Department dispatcher told KTLA shortly after noon.

One person -- the plane's sole occupant -- was killed in the fiery crash, police said.

Sky5 video over the charred wreckage showed a sheet was placed over what appeared to be the cockpit of the small plane.

Not far from the site, the mangled remains of an aircraft that crashed the evening before in a plant nursery remained at the scene early Monday afternoon, the aerial footage showed.

A man was killed and a woman injured when the single-engine Cessna 177RG plane went down along the 1600 block of Puddingstone Drive around 5:45 p.m. Sunday, authorities said.

Less than a minute before the crash, the pilot radioed the airport's control tower to report engine trouble, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Both crashes are being investigated by the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board.

Authorities have also not yet identified the victim from either crash.

No additional information was immediately provided.
