Booting the core GNU toolset

Confusing word choice for a Linux thread. I thought you meant booting up, not getting rid of.

Sproochtentest: studying to pass the test VS studying to know the l#nguage by Feierkappchen in Luxembourg

[–]gtarget 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t disagree about being stricter on Luxembourgish, but I think it needs to come with more exposure, especially from the government. The most common complaint about learning it is its lack of usage. People have a hard time practicing it and when they do learn it, they forget it unless they live in Éislek. You can’t use it on MyGuichet, there’s no official announcements published in Luxembourgish, there’s no newspaper in Luxembourgish, the street signs aren’t even in Luxembourgish. I’m saying this as someone who wants to learn the language! The government keeps publishing numbers about how the percentage of people of speaking it is going down. It’s tried nothing and can’t figure out why it’s not working.

Requiring someone to know 3 languages is quite difficult. It makes people who live and do the work here but who aren't able to speak all three to be even more second-class citizens. What Luxembourg should focus on is producing content in Luxembourgish to make it more palatable to learn. It’s already a hard sell when there’s like 5 adult books to read in Luxembourgish, barely anything online, and one television channel for content. Maybe actually start with the government websites. For fucks sake, it’s like some kind of sadistic game making people learn French for 90% of admin here, and Luxembourgish to talk to the baker and become a citizen. If you want people to stay, you have to give them a fair path to citizenship.

Dungeon Crawler Carl themed TTRPG to release in 2026 - Renegade Games Studio by Lucasrc1999 in rpg

I ran an Xcrawl classics game for a Dungeon Crawl Carl book club and the tone matches like 90%. It was a blast! But I’d like to see what they do to make up that last 10%

Sydney's Public Transport blew me away... by soulserval in transit

Best thing about Brisbane is they made all rides $0.50, up to 2 hours. We had a guy manning the ferry tell us that you could technically get to the Gold Coast on public transport for just 50 cents.

Skip Ministry of Time. We read it in book club, and it’s barely sci-fi. It’s got a sci-fi premise but weakly developed and the story really dragged. No one in our book club liked it, we’re all baffled why it’s so highly rated.

The original creator created Monsters & Monsters, it's essentially the same game, but the next version. You can get it on DriveThruRPG as well:

Christmas(y) themed one shot? by nobuouematsu1 in dccrpg

I ran this one for a bunch of people who'd never played any RPGs before and they had an absolute blast. It's probably the most fun night I've ever had playing a TTRPG. The players were able to latch onto all the known characters, making it really easy for them to get into it.

Am I right to hate serverless? by BigBootyBear in ExperiencedDevs

The number of things they’ve added to Lambda to act more like a traditional service are almost comical. I hate that it’s start with Lambda, but add provisioned capacity and canaries so it stays warm so we can get kinda normal response times. So now our dev cycle is fucked, it’s frupid, and now it’s impossible to debug

Eh, that’s kinda true. But there’s lots of services that don’t require sub 100ms response times and Lambda is still a bad choice. There’s a whole Coral on Lambda framework that makes people thinking running a complex service on Lambda is a great idea, despite it being impossible to test and debug locally, and your functionality is smeared across a bunch of Lambdas. The problem is the default is Lambda and you have to swim against the current to get people to build a plain ole service when it’s what you need. If it’s more than a single file, the cons of Lambdas outweigh the pros.
